Just curious for those who have experience doing so. There's a fair amount of schools who go out of state every year but how does that happen? Do schools literally call around looking for schools to schedule games against or do you just notify the state that you're willing to host / travel and just have them work out the kinks? Does a host school need to helf cover expenses of a traveling team?

It can vary as far as the terms. First depending on section rules, game date, etc. has to fit with section rules (e.g., start of season, if early game may request to practice a week early but probably have to have a dead week when you would normally practice, etc.). If a high profile event, some times a sponsor pays for travel but in most cases the traveling school has to pay for (maybe can get reimbursed from gate ticket sales, etc.). If a two year contract, typically teams get their own gate, but some can negotiate slit gates. Would recommend split gate is one year deal. Also negotiate play rules if there are any differences in sections/states. Some teams will cover their own expenses but best to negotiate a fair deal and compensation if two year deal not followed through. Some teams do pay travel expenses through fund raising. You may want to talk to a coach from less high profile teams like Scotts Valley - CCS or Aptos - CCS, DelOro-SJS, Serra-San mateo - teams that have traveled - they tend to play an out of section and state game in many years. Some host teams arrange for visiting team members to stay with family of team members and often host a dinner for the traveling team. Best to talk with some head coaches though. It can vary how the terms pay for or negotiate terms. Some programs have such a large budget from the revenue from the football program that they can travel yearly.

Sutter from the North Section does an out of state game every other year so that every varsity player can get the experience of it. In the last last 10 years Sutter has traveled to Texas, Idaho and Oregon several times and in fact heads to Autzen stadium this season. These games are usually showcase games which usually consist of 3 or 4 games in a given day or weekend. Your team is usually paired with a school of similar size or division. Some states do advertise these series where others are word of mouth. Usually once you participate and you have no problems and are competitive you will be asked back. You can contact Coach Reynolds at Sutter High if you would like more info. He has lots of experience at this
