San Jose Mercury news link - No Open Division. A leagues are seeded by enrollment into three divisions (4 automatic by league and 4 additional at large). B & C leagues compete in 2 divisions by enrollment and not bowl eligible. A No more putting all WCAL in same division. MBL, PAL and (MHAL, STAL, WBAL) have mechanism for teams to move from A, B and C leagues.

There is an Opt up clause
The format includes opt-up language for champions from the Santa Cruz Coast and Mission Trail leagues.

Maybe Sacred Heart Prep winning Open Division over WCAL teams was good...

Passed unanimously.

This is actually a pretty good format compared to the old Open format. This gives 3 CCS teams SBG eligibility, and it'll be based on enrollment size.

Only drawback is maybe if the other divisions were bowl eligible they would get more in play-in games as supposedly all playoff winners get in next season.

Anybody got an idea what brackets would of looked like this past season if this was the system? Curious to see the match-ups.

This is what I got for this years match up using the new format. Remember no more A+ league so WCAL games only count as A league games.
Also stand along SCCAL champ Aptos would replace Terra Nova as the team with the lowest amount of points.
With the new rules Menlo would receive bid over MA because they would receive a point for Mission being round robin champs in the AAA that they did not receive this year

thank you tigerfan for the matchups. I was surprised serra was slated in div 2. I didn't realize there were plenty of big div 1 public schools.

How the hell is Terra Nova in B2?!?!?! They're in an A league!

Was that much different than this? http://norcalpreps.forums.rivals.com/threads/ccs-new-playoff-format.3801/

I believe the teams that will be disadvantaged the most in this format are the 5th and 6th place finishers in the WCAL. Without the extra A+ league power points for WCAL games, a WCAL team would have to win all three pre-season games and at least 3 or 4 WCAL games. In the matchups posted, Mitty and St. Francis make it into the tournament with 4-3 league records and 6-4 overall records. St. Ignatius is dropped out with a 2-5 league record and 5-5 overall - despite three pre-season wins over Sectional finalists (Marin Catholic, Terra Nova and St. Mary's-Stockton).

I'd argue that the A+ Power Points were a fair consideration for playing in such a difficult league. Last season, SI beat Monterey (A3 - 7 seed), and Pioneer (A2 - 3 seed) before losing by a FG to Aptos (A3 - 4 seed) in the final. To be fair, the playoffs should include the top 6 finishers from the WCAL conference.

The scenario above had 6 out of 8 WCAL teams in bowl eligible playoffs. That is probably more than any year previously. The ability to compete by enrollment divisions opens up slots. Yes...maybe for example an SI that plays a very tough nonleague schedule and only wins 2 WCAL games might not make it (they would have last season), but more of a scheduling issue. Maybe teams will look at nonleague games closer as far as scheduling, but then again they would benefit more from wins against A league teams. I have no problem with teams with losing records not making the playoffs, but even a 2-5 WCAL (5-5 overall) SI made the playoffs and probably wouldn't win with the other WCAL teams in the division. Maybe a Riordan and SHC would strengthen D3 bowl eligible playoff but that would mean all 8 WCAL teams would be in playoffs and those two had losing records. SHC was 3-0 in nonleague but only one win was against a team with winning record. Neither team in my opinion deserved to make the playoffs. Maybe a 4-6 team might and probably will come up in future playoffs, but 5-6 WCAL teams in the bowl eligible playoffs per year is reasonable. There needs to be some filter. Why should all WCAL teams get automatic playoff bid? I think the A+ designation impact will be marginal and winning games in league need to mean something.
