SHC - Campo

Irish actually made more three-pointers. The game was really won at the line. Campo was 22 of 29. It's hard to win when the other team can't miss a shot.

I've grown tired of these mea culpa's by Darrell. He did this at Woodside and ever since he got to SHC. He doesn't free flow with his adjustments.

"I stayed in the zone too long," SHC coach Darrell Barbour said. "That's on me. I mean, give (Campolindo) credit for making those shots, but I needed to do a better job of putting us in position to win."

He really should have a defensive specialist for an assistant. How hard could it be to keep the big guys under the basket and other to pressure the ball-handlers?

That and allowing a 19-0 run? Why do you have time outs?

I'd say that SH got to right about where they should have finished for the year. Last year they lost in the first round of Nor Cal's to a Drake team that featured a big man Jesse Hunt that they had no answer for. This year they got in one more game and ran into the same problem in Chris Hansen for Campo as well as NBA Jams like shooting for the outside.

I don't believe SH can be serious contenders for a state title until they have that post player that is an A+ defender/rebounder and a B+ offensive player. They have no answer for teams with big men. When you have guys like Kevin Greene and Taylor Johns guarding the post, the game usually will favor SH. But if your best post defender (Hollins) is likely shouldering the whole team's defensive burden and asked to score 15-20 points, thats not the recipe for a state title.

I think next year's team provided Hollins doesn't transfer out will be making a deeper run because Tonga should be a needed inside boost for this squad.

I hope Hollins does not transfer out, did you hear something to make you think that ? If he does. he should take Carter with him..Either way Serra and St. Francis still have the core of their teams. SH will need Pardini to get bigger and Tonga and someone else to get defensive help next year. Serra showed recently they will be the team to beat next year and Chuck Rapp by far has shown he is one heck of a coach and that defense is the name of the game in the WCAL that wins championships. SH barbour is a good coach he just needs to work on the Sh defense which was the Achilles heel all year. Ill agree that a Div 3 championship is not a bad thing for this group, it was the best they could do and no one would have predicted more. If they did go further, no one would be complaining about Barbour this year.

@Scott I have not come across anything that suggests that Hollins would leave other than last year when Hollins was looking at Findlay Prep and Carter was looking at Mitty. But what I do know is this year and last year's team makeup and chemistry is much different than the Khalil James/Herman Pratt years. There are agendas on this squad. Ones that can carry you to a CCS D3 championship, but far short of being a serious Nor Cal/State contender.

If you watched or attended games this year, the body language says it all. These guys dont like playing with each other. Guys dont like certain roles that Barbour needs them to do in order to win. Its very likely this year's team had more 3 point attempts than 2 point attempts. Its very likely that this year's team gave up more offensive rebounds than collecting defensive rebounds.

I really hope Hollins does not transfer because his college potential is going to be a perimeter player. His 3 point shot is very consistent and Im sure on a team where he didnt need to be the teams best inside defender he can avg 20+ ppg. The college coaches already know what he can do, they should be more impressed what he was able to do as an inside defender. Whether he liked being the teams top rebounder or not, I applaud him for going out there and doing it.

At least they came away with some hardware. I go back to when the CCS was the end of it. Sweeping SI wasn't bad either. Much better if baseball beats them.

Irish Cheers, it will be interesting who is applying for the SI basketball job and who gets it...

@geary, couldn't have said it any better myself.
They definitely had their own agendas this year. Hollins and parsons both wanted to be leading scorers.
Hollins would show frustration with other teammates on the court. He is a sophomore, so he has time to grow into leader over summer.
I can see why, but as the leader he needs to pick guys up. Rather than showing disappointment in them after screwing up.
College coach's notice these things as well as athleticism, shooting, passing.
I think he is as good as armani Collins, now.

I hope its some guy the alumni arent happy with and leads them to awful seasons like this year.

@linc , when SH struggled it was when Parsons being more of the irrational heat-check guy. When they excelled, it was when he was able to take the ball on the wing, get into that free throw area, draw the double team and pass to the cutting teammate on the baseline for the layup. We saw this during the CCS playoffs and the team thrived. Of course it was just against lower tiered CCS teams and not against top tiered WCAL / NCS teams so it may be a moot point.

Collins would have looked great in green/white/blue. Just another one of the kids that makes you say, how come we didnt get that kid???

Another case of would have and could have...but in the end I guess he choose Stuart Hall. In the beginning, everyone thought he was coming to SH but the SH stood for Stuart Hall and not Sacred Heart this time.

True enough. You have to keep your cool out there. If you don't, the other team feeds on it.

Armani Collins is a good player but plays in a league that is nowhere close to the caliber of the WCAL. He is allowed to do whatever he wants, whenever he wants. Could he have been as good had he been in the WCAL? I think so, the kid is talented. Alfred Hollins is better than him now and will be a real headache for WCAL coaches the next 2 years. Inside/outside game and his effort on the defensive end is getting there through his development. The body language has to be better and it will be as he matures and starts being his own man. The kid is a really good talent. This summer will be crucial for him to improve in some areas. I also hope that whomever is giving him guidance will keep him in line to be able to take the next steps to reach his full potential.

It will be interesting next year for sure. Hollins will be going into his Junior year and he probably will be one of the team captains. SHC has a very young team. They have to learn how to play defense like Serra to win championships. Just like Thomas for the girls' SH basketball team. She will be the vocal leader next year and will probably be one of the captains. SHC has very young teams but the leaders' will be established early next year. This year Parsons' and Hart were the seniors and at times effective but I'm not sure how much you can count on two seniors to be vocal and to be team leaders with a basketball team filled with starters whom mostly comprise of Frosh and Soph. They probably need to do a lot more 7 on 5 drills to get ready for next year. They also need shifty Mello Dunbar to start performing like his brother, he should be able to break the press more easily with his potential skills.

I see next years young Irish team causing fits on both ends of the court. Reason being primarily because they will be a much closer team(Age and Cohesive wise)... Starring Roles as well as Role players, will be established as early as summer league. I see Alfred Hollins backpacking this team, but will still be accompanied by gamechanging teammates, that can step up on one of his off nights, as well as games where other teams give him Double Trouble.

A. Hollins has in incredible worth ethic, and it was evident during the 2nd half of league play, as he took his game to another level.. The question with him has always been his engine. I believe he is currently turning that corner, and with a Top Tier AAU season, combined with a few wind sprints, his motor should be able to race for 4qtrs on both on both "O" and "D" next season...

R. Dunbar is just the opposite...Horrible worth ethic, with a High Performance Motor. Dont know if the light will come on in time, but if it does and he polishes up the skillset that was given to him, then we just might just see a glimpse of his older brother. I wont hold my breath on that thought, but will on the thought that he'l be on the front line of "defense" when the Irish executes their press.

A Player that wasn't mention in the last post, who we'l be extremely valuable, and that has a combination of both Work Ethic and Motor will be the Freshman Nate Robinson. The kid is a work-a-holic in the gym, and he has his WCAL legs under him now, so next years confidence will put him on every opposing teams scouting report. I'll decline to comment on R.Carter, who should be a contributing factor, but?????

Hey Keepit100, I love to hear your input on the team because I know you do have knowledge most do not. I agree Nate Robinson seems to have a nice demeanor on the court and you can tell he is a team player. He will something special especially if he grows a little more and will be one of those guys the school probably will make a poster out of if he keeps up his current work ethic. Alfred Hollins is a stud and everyone knows it but he needs to be the leader now to bring the Irish to the next level. Regarding Dunbar he showed some flashes of good play this year but his shooting on the floor was questionable. All the games I saw, he couldn't make his free throws when he got there?? But he has some maturing to do, he is a different kid but that doesn't mean I do not see him being as good or better than his brother if he puts his mind to it, still young, but at some point he will wear his own label, and youth will not be an excuse. As a team, Irish should be doing 7 on 5 drills all day before season starts. Serra pretty much set the standard on D-fense and we all saw what did they did to MC. Hats off to Mr. Rapp, hella of a coaching job. BTW, Keepit100, Happy about your first one, he did pretty well his freshman year in college!!

Yes, the team with the seniors leading this year was more interested in making a music video I guess than getting more trophies...lol. "SHC hot boys" google it...lol. I thought it was a nice way to blow some steam off for them though

I thought it was interesting the video was all about the "hot boys", not about the entire team.

I gotta tell you Scott, for me to be someone you claim as an inside track on the "Irish", I knew absolutely NOTHING about that helarious "SHC HOT BOY" video! The 1st thing that came to mind when I saw it was "What(on court) weakness each of the video stars could have been working on, during the taping of that video.lol...Robinsons dad being 6'6 should guarantee him a few more inches. Dunbars free throw woes should disappear, when the confidence surfaces(horrific %!),, and I also see A. Hollins taking more of a leadership role...

Also Big Thanks for the support,,, but T.D. found his self in the coach's DogHouse on a few occasions this year for minor mishaps off the court,(kids, smh) but hopefully with a year of maturity under his belt, the growing pains are in the rearview mirror, and he'l get it right next season.

That video was funny...I thought the same, make a video after winning the whole season or after it, not during the season when you could be working on skills or even higher grades..lol. Keepit100, don't be so hard on yourself they can't be perfect either. But that is what being a parent is all about watching them struggle and overcome. I trust you did a lot more than others working with your kids, be thankful you got that opportunity to instill or depart some knowledge and that you did the best you could.

Nate looks like everything you said, you can see he is a good kid and is very coachable when you watch his attitude on the court. He probably will find himself in a few more videos, media or Second century magazines for the school or the face of the program if he keeps up the good work.

I guess the promising freshman Nifai Tonga moved to Utah for school? He looked liked like he was getting better and a shoe in for varsity as a Soph. His family and kid were devout mormons. Anyone confirm?

Haven't heard that. We'll find out when the football rosters are out.

If true, it's one more player the Cottontails won't have to be afraid of.

Also, Irish Cheers, 2015 Christian Wilburn is attempting to secure a spot with the Santa Clara Broncos, I am happy for him. He was not SHC's best player but played and practiced hard. The kid does well academically. I think he will be playing in the World games in Austria, not a bad feat for a guy who routinely makes the most of what he has!
