Simply B Ball showdown recap

Simply Showdown Recap
By Coaches Corner Digest

Game 1: 70-49 - Vanden
Vanden Vs Oakridge
Oakridge looked to be up for the challenge coming out early and jumping on Vanden taking a early first quarter lead. Vanden called a early timeout and came out with much needed intensity on defense being sparked by #2Tyler Thompson and #10Elijah Lewis. Ending the first half with a 35-25 lead. Oakridge continued to compete being lead by #10 Bellingham dropping 21 points but it was not enough as Vanden sophomore #5 Ahsan Huff seemed to control every rebound ending the game with 22 boards. Vanden never looked back and finished strong

Game 2
Monterey Trails vs El Camino
Extremely hard fought game. MT #0 Varick Lewis guard came out controlling the tempo of the game, a true point guard and fun to watch. Giving them the lead to end the first quarter 19-14. El Camino with sharp shooting from #10 Mateen Rafiq (15 pts) helped them climb back into the game and took the lead going into the half 31-24. The game went back and forth until El Camino guard #5 Kiku Parker 16 pts 8 rebounds decided to put the team on his back playing hard on both sides of the ball and making big plays for his team down the strech. MT keep fighting but El Camino pulls out a close one 58-57 El Camino.

Game 3 Liberty vs Davis 64-51
Liberty came out with focus and lead this game from beginning to end. Liberty was very impressive and I will be watching this team again. They Passed the ball very well and understand the extra or one more pass concept. Davis had some bright spots lead by guard #20 Collin Walsh. However Liberty today was a little to much. Liberty guard #24 Julian Costa 23pts and Forward #1 Miles Lawrence 15pts had great games and team high scorers.

Game 4 Shadow Hills(palm springs) vs Del Campo 64-49
The score doesn’t tell the story in this one. Shadow Hills comes out the gate swinging lead by high flying #2 Chris Carter starting the game with 3 consecutive dunks and a 3 pointer. Yes he scored the first 9 points of the game. Del Campo who is a well coached team fought back and continued to fight the entire game. In the fourth quarter Campo actually cut the lead to 6 however they seem to just run out of gas and Shadow hills was able to hold for the win.
Chris Carter ended the game with 22 points and 8 rebounds

Game 5
Edison (Stockton) Vs Whitney.
This game was a slug fest with neither team going away. Both teams came out clicking on all cylinders however Edison’s #23 Elijah Watkins refused to be stopped scoring from everywhere on the floor and leading his team with 11 first half points. Half time scored 42-41 Edison. Whitney came out with great energy in the 3rd quarter behind #2 Mateo Delgadillo hitting back to back 3’s. Whitney is a very disciplined team and kept climbing back into the game. The turning point of the game was Edison’s Top scorer and one of the main ball handlers Leon Mills (20 points) fouled out. Whitney was able to take advantage of this taking the lead with #20 Matt Schroeder (23 pts) hitting a big 3 pointer in the 4th quarter with 3:36 left in the game. It went back and forth with Edison being short handed and Whitney pulling out a very close one 72-70. I would love to see these two play again.

Game 6
Sac high vs Folsom 51-69 Folsom
Folsom is a very solid and complete team. The size and discipline they have make them a tough match up every night. This game was no different with Folsom leading from the beginning to end. Folsom jumped on Sac high and never let up. Being lead by Player of the game #33 Brycen Shackelford who controlled the game from the inside doing everything ending the game with 16pts. Folsom was able to rest the starters going into the fourth. Folsom is a team to watch out for.

Game 7
Capital Christian vs Jesuit
Another great game that was back and forth from tip ball. Although the game was close Jesuit seemed to be in control holding on to a close lead in the 1st and 2nd quarter with the scores being 15-13, and 22-24 at halftime. Capital Christian was able to stay close and in the 3rd turned it around by big plays and a monster dunk from #1Anthony Garcia ending the 3rd quarter 38-34. But one of the smallest guys on the floor showed the heart of a lion putting the team on his back converting two back to back And 1’s to pull out the victory #3 Kanye Clarke. He played great on both sides of the ball and his refusal to lose. He also ended the game with 17 points 7 rebounds. Final score 55-49 Capitol

Game 8
Sheldon vs Pleasant Valley (Chico)
The saying speed kills was on display in this one. Sheldons smothering defense and speed was a big problem for the PV squad. PV coach tried to slow the game down by running down the shot clock every possession and trying to keep the game score low. In the first half Sheldon played into this plan with the halftime score being 28-20. In the 3rd quarter Sheldon decided to pick the pace up more pushing the lead up to 29 lead by #4 Rashaud Bradley 18pts and #0 Tyrice Daniels 14 pts. PV is a good team that shoots the ball extremely well and will give teams in the north state problems. Once they play against more teams with this type of speed they’ll be a great program. It’s nice to see the north state teams coming down to compete. Hats off. 73-53 Sheldon
Pv High scorer #2 Noah Thomas

Campo Hosts CVC…

Campo’s gym is nearly empty with the Covid protocols in place, and I am watching on NFHS. Excellent feed for that service, and with announcers and all rather than the “security-cam” setup seen in many places.

Looks like both teams are at least close to full strength. Not really that sure about CVC, but Campo has all their starters, includig the return of Matt Radell and Logan Robeson. Cougs are 9-1, CVC is 9-5 after their somewhat surprising loss Tuesday to Northgate.

Tops 10s: Tournaments Over Its League Time

1) Campo --> Still No 1 even though they lost a tough game to OCFFA (TX)
2) De La Salle --> Took Mater Dei to the final whistle. Will Compete with Dougherty Valley for EBL with Granada and SRV being sleepers.
3) Miramonte --> Beat King (Los Angeles), Serra, and Folsom all in one week. Will challenge Campo in the Diablo-Foothill League.
4) St Patrick St. Vincent ---> Impressive team at 10-1. Team isn't getting the respect it deserves.
5) St Ignatius --> Lost to Branson in Championship of the Chris Huber Classic. Still a top 5 team IMO.
6) Branson --> Huge win over SI..getting revenge for a previous loss.
7) Dougherty Valley --> 12-0 is nothing to sneeze at. League play will tell us a lot about this team.
8) Riordan --> Did solid in Texas Tournament going 2-1.....shot clock rule in TX is messed up!
9) Saint Francis --> Only losses to SHP (10) and Campo (1).
10) Sacred Heart Prep -->Went 2-1 against teams from Ohio and Washington..Heavy Favorites to win the WBL

Considered: Salesian, Oakland Tech, Oakland High, Los Altos, Mitty, San Ramon Valley, Archie Williams, Dublin

I will leave the other areas...Sacramento...etc....to the folks that know those areas! Happy New Year Everyone!
