Let’s face it, NorCal needs De La Salle whichever way you spin it.

For the first time in California State Bowl Game history De La Salle does not have a dog in the race. The team selected to represent the North in the open, Serra of San Mateo, is (SLOWLY) being walked out to the woodshed on Statewide Television as we speak.

Make no mistake about it, Mater Dei is the best High School team money can buy at that’s at the National Level. That said, the CIF made a huge mistake keeping De La Salle out of the open.

Many point to De La Salle’s vaunted veer offense as prehistoric and a thing of the past. But for all the simplicity in their scheme the reality is that it is a scheme that rarely beats itself.

I’m not saying De La Salle beats this Mater Dei team. But hell, this one is nearing a safety hazard at this point.

45th Annual Cordova High Christmas tournament.

Semi final game
Inderkum 10-1 vs Oakland Tech 10-3
This game was extremely physical and played a blaring speed. Inderkum comes out swinging by starting the game in a full court trap flying all over the floor jumping out to a 8-0 lead. They controlled the entire first quarter 25-17 Inderkum.
Oakland Tech decided to pick up full court themselves and started to match the speed and intensity of the game being lead by guard #1 Ahmaree-Muhammad. By continuing to Attack the basket and getting to the free throw line, Tech was able to cut the lead to 4 with 6:00 minutes left in the 2nd quarter. However missed free throws hurt them from taking the lead.

Inderkum stayed with the game plan lead by Derrick Claxton and Teand-Indalecio ending the half with the lead 47-36

Inderkum started the 3rd quarter in another gear coming out with a monster dunk by Claxton and even more pressure which was the story for the rest of the game. The size of Inderkum and lack of rebounding for tech started to become an issue. It was multiple technical foul calls and bodies flying everywhere as Inderkum begin to pull away ending the 3rd up 20.

Tech fought the entire way and wouldn’t lay down. Ahmaree continued to attack ending the game with 23 points, helped by Mahlik Smith who chipped in 12. But Inderkum was just to much for them tonight. The size, speed, and conditioning of this team will be a problem for most squads. Teand ended the game with 19 points off the bench and Claxton with 25. I could watch these to play over and over. The effort, teamwork, and coaching on both sides was top notch. Great high school game.

WCJ update

Somehow we survived the first day with only a few missed games -- though many adjustments were made.

Thanks especially to the officials, who made it work, and to all the people at all the host sites who dealt with everything from blown electricals to rapidly changing schedules.

Things are a little confusing -- I'm not even sure what I did in the Quartz/Ruby loser's bracket -- and the Diamond and Turquoise are now round-robin brackets. You can find the info by bracket at

To find a bracket for a particular team, you have to go to that team's MaxPreps' schedule, click on Preview and then, somewhat hidden but at least highlighted on the screen, you can click on the bracket. Well, except for the round-robin teams, for which all their games are only on their MaxPreps' schedule.

We abandoned the idea of printing large-scale brackets because we feared changes, and since six teams dropped out yesterday, we were sadly right.

Thanks again to the teams, fans, officials and everyone involved.

2022 SG Noah Thomas leads Vikings to opening win over Edison-Stockton

In the best matchup on Day 1 of the Holiday Hoop Classic at Modesto Christian, #31 Pleasant Valley beat Edison-Stockton 76-74. Senior guard Noah Thomas (6-foot-2) had a season high 27 points (7-for-22 from the field) with five rebounds, two assists and five steals. He made four threes and scored 11 points in the fourth quarter as the Vikings overcame a nine point deficit.

Thomas has a quick release on his shot and freed himself up multiple times on Monday with off-ball movement that turned into catch and shoot looks. He had a pair of threes from the left wing and two more from the left corner.

He was most effective as a driver when he could receive the ball on the move going toward the basket. From there, he used his quickness and athleticism to charge into the defense for paint looks or get to the foul line. Thomas finished 9-for-12 from the foul line.

Defensively, Thomas was an active on-ball defender closing off driving lanes aginst some quick Edison guards. He was aggressive going after dribbles and also contested shots well on drive attempts.

Thomas was ranked No. 29 in the 2022 class heading into the season.

Torrey Pines, Day 1

Gym wifi-is nonexistent and the cellphone recption is pretty weak…. Not sure how well this is gonna work. I already moved way down to the end, closer to an open door in hopes of getting a decent signal…

Anyway, right now I am half-watching a lower-bracket game whilest I await the top-bracket games starting next.
