Sacred Heart Prep is off to a roaring start this year after winning the Crusader Classic. All three wins look really good, as Inderkum won the Edison McDonald's Classic, San Ramon Valley won their own Mark Madsen Invitational and Riordan finished second at Gridley.
Unlike last season, SHP doesn't have to outscore teams, as was indicated by holding SRV to 34 points and Riordan to 47. This year's Gators have size with the return of Emmer Nichols and development of 6'7 junior Sam Norris. Kevin Carney is just 5'6 but can shoot the lights out and won MVP at the Crusader Classic. Obviously, Aidan Braccia is the star. He committed to Belmont a few weeks ago and is both a strong shooter and passer. He's a great student as well and his high basketball IQ is on display when he's on the court. Sachit Sinha also looks far better than he did a few months ago, having really put on some muscle and developed as a passer and finisher.
The early success came without the services of Mat Bucher, RJ Stephens and Jake York, all of whom were playing football up until Saturday.
They play St. Francis on Friday and Bellarmine on Saturday at the DJ Frandsen Memorial, which is a set schedule this year rather than a bracket.
Unfortunately, outside of Menlo and Priory, they won't have many competitive league games. The WBAL is a bit down, with King's Academy, Eastside and Pinewood all struggling. The Gators play Half Moon Bay at Miramonte's MLK showcase on 1/15 and Lincoln-Stockton at Crush in the Valley a week later.
I think this isn't just an Open Division team. This looks like a team that should at least reach the Open semifinals, if not more.
