West Coast Jamboree may need you

So we had two teams drop in the last 48 hours and we're right at 120. I'm expecting more to drop, and I would surprised if we got through the three days and 15 brackets without more cancellations.

So if you have any games left over, and are free any one or more of the three days (Dec. 28-30), and would be interested in picking up a game or games, email me at claykallam@gmail.com. No guarantees, of course, but all you'll have to do is be ready and willing to show up.

St Patrick St Vincent

Don't sleep on SPSV! This team might surprise people. They went 2-1 at the Father Berry tourney taking the consolation championship. The played the tourney champ Brophy better than any other team this weekend. They lost to Campolindo a few weeks back in the foundation game by 2. They're a well coached team with not alot of size, but a talented group. Id expect them to have a nice run this season. Props to coach Derrick Walker and his staff!

How did NorCal's Top Teams end the season?

There are different sources for polls and rankings of sorts so for this post I'll stick to CalPreps to keep it conistent. Whether or not you like CalPreps it is based soely on statistics as to scores, opponents win/loss records and overall win/loss records in regards to "strength of schedule" and doesn;t seem to be any human bias involved. I'll take a look at 4 teams: DLS, Folsom, Serra, St. Francis. As to the outcome of the state open there were no surprises as MD overwhelmed Serra by 44-7 which is not far off from the CalPreps projected score of 48-0. MD was as talented as advertised and Serra did not help its cause with 3 turnovers incl a pick-6 and being stopped at the 1-yard line of MD at end of first 1/2. The Padres did score however regardless proving those who predicted they would not cross mid-field or score any points incorrect. See if you agree or disagree with the computer generated results below.

Final CA State Rankings:
#10 - Serra 11-2
#14 - DLS 10-3
#15 - St. Francis 11-1
#18 - Folsom 11-4

Final Season Games:
Serra loses to MD 44-7 [projected winner MD 48-0]
DLS loses to Folsom 28-27 [projected winner DLS 34-21]
St. Francis loses to Serra 16-12 [projected winner SF 34-24]
Folsom loses to Cathedral Catholic 33-21 [projected winner CC 40-31]

Mater Dei point differential in wins over top 100 ranked teams:
#2 Servite 27-7 = +20
#2 Servite 46-37 = +9
#3 Centennial Corona 21-16 = +5
#4 St. John Bosco 42-21 = +21
#6 Duncanville, Tx 45-3 = +42
#23 Lutheran - Orange 55-16 = +39
#39 Santa Margarita 56-3 = +53
#40 Serra 44-7 = +37
#47 Norco 49-14 = +35

Computer Projections of DLS, SF and Folsom vs Mater Dei:
Mater Dei 49-7 over DLS [+42]
Mater Dei 49-6 over SF [+43]
Mater Dei 46-3 over Folsom [+43]

Conclusion: It was obvious prior to the Open game and the final score proved the projection highly accurate. There was no top NorCal team that was going to be highly competitive with the #1 ranked MD powerhouse. Whether DLS, SF or Folsom could have fared better than Serra is open to discussion, however looking at the data that would be highly questionable [or not?]...

Edison McDonald’s final Recap

Day 3 Recap Championship Day of the McDonald’s Classic

First game
Vanden vs Gregori
Both teams have struggled this weekend trying hard to get their first Win. They both come into tonight 0-2 in the tournament. It was a hard fought battle with Vanden pulling it out down the stretch. Just to much size inside lead by Takai Emerson-Hardy who finished with 27points and making the All Tourney team. Don’t let Vandens record fool you. This is a very loaded squad that’s well coach, and despite what their record says, they are a confident bunch. Gregori was lead by guards Kody Nunes 17 pts and Kyle Monk 22pts who also both made the All Tourney team
Final score Gregori 53 Vanden 61

Second game
Folsom vs Oakland Tech
If you’re a defensive person this was the game for you. Both teams playing very disciplined help defense which made it tough for either team to score. Folsom with it’s tough half court man and tech with the full court pressure. Omar Staples got going for tech and scored the first 6 points however Folsom’s size seemed to be a problem for Tech. Folsoms Brycen Shackelford had his way inside scoring 19 points for the game and controlled the paint all night. Tech is a solid young team with a pair of great young guards in Ahmaree Muhammed and Mahlik Smith. The Future will be bright for them. Folsom ended up pulling away.
Final Tech 49-Folsom 56

3rd game
Edison vs Central
Turnovers was the name of this game. Both teams was pretty much equally matched but Edison’s turnovers was the deciding factor in the game. Edison struggled scoring due to missing a few starters one being away (Devan Thompkins) on a college visit to University of Southern California. I will definitely come watch Edison again at full strength. I believe they could be a special group. Kejean Johnson chipped in 14 points and had a solid game for Edison but Central guards Terik Streets and LaDanian Streets both had solid games controlling the backcourt on both sides of the ball. Central wins a close and hard fought game.
Final 41-49 Central

Championship game
Inderkum vs Grant.
This is the game everybody wanted to see and it didn’t disappoint one bit. Grant starting the game in a full court press and Inderkum in their man to man defense. Inderkum jumped out to an early lead with a monster dunk by Anthony Williams which set a tone for what seemed to be the rest of the game. Coach Wilson also went to his bench early and brought in Damarieah Osby who hits three 3’s in the second quarter. Halftime score was 30-36. Grants guard Rishon Brown showed why he is a top player in the area. He’s a true competitor and competed to the final buzzer ending the game with 25 points. Rishon also made the All Tournament team. Inderkum Derrick Claxton finished the game with 22 points and was MVP of the tournament. He did it all. Played both sides of the ball and has such a nice midrange game he was unstoppable all weekend. Inderkum lead this game from beginning to end and pushed the score to as much as 19 in the 3rd quarter. Grant opened the 4th quarter on a quick 4-0 run but Inderkums size and well balanced attack from inside - out was just to much for Grant tonight.
Inderkum looks extremely good and their team chemistry seems to be great. Coach Wilson is doing an excellent job with his group. They’ll be a fun team to watch as the season goes on.
Final inderkum 69-Grant 54

What a great High school tournament. Stay tuned for more coverage of great High School Basketball in the area.

Edison High School McDonalds Classic. Day 1 recap

Coaches Corner
Day 1 Recap of the Stockton’s McDonald’s Classic at Edison Senior High School was all it was hyped up to be. From the facilities to the hospitality room for coaches, players and Referees. Everything was first class about this event.

The games kicked off with Folsom taking on Central High school.
Folsom jumped out in front by executing and using Centrals speed and aggressive defense against them. Lead by Miles Macayan coming off the bench giving the Bulldogs great momentum in the first half. Halftime score 24-27 Folsom leads. The second half Central decided to change out of the man to man and go zone which turned out to be the deciding factor in the game. Central started getting stops and attacking the basket. Central’s Terik Streets with 17 points and multiple steals was a problem for Folsom defense and lead the charge for Central’s comeback. Marques Green (Central) didn’t have a great offensive night however he did a lot of the little things. Rebounding, steals and playing great defense. Game went back and forth until the end. Central pulls out a tough one. Final score 55-58 Central wins.

Game #2
Oakland Tech vs Grant High School.
Grant jumped out to a early lead and never looked back. Rishod Brown put his thumb print on this game from beginning to end. Rebounding, blocking shots as well as scoring from all three levels. Jayson Mathews also hit a few big 3’s to open up the game. Tech continued to fight and kept the game close however the speed and press of Grant seemed to be to much at least yesterday it was. To Oakland Techs defense they played and beat a very good top ranked team in Clayton Valley High school the day before by 1 point. Which may be the reason for them looking fatigued. Oakland Tech and Grant both will be in the running late this season. Two Very good teams
Final 66-59 Grant Wins

Game #3
Vanden vs inderkum
Boy oh boy was this a game to see. If you get a chance this season to see either one of these teams. Do yourself a favor and do so. Both teams are loaded with talent, size and great coaching. Vanden comes out the Gate on fire lead by Tyler Thompson (22points) and takes a 22-16 lead and they seemed to be running away with the game. Coach Wilson stayed with the game plan which was to out run and stay in the press and they continued to cut into the lead slowly. Vanden seem to struggle with the press at times even getting a 10 second call. Coach Wilson and inderkums planned worked as they came back and took the lead going into halftime 42-25. When Coach Wilson was asked about being down early he stated “we take conditioning very serious.” It showed. It seems as the game went on they got stronger.
Inderkum never looked back after taking the lead. The game was lead
Derrick Clayton with an impressive 33points. He seem to put the team on his back and lead them to victory. I’m sure we’ll be hearing plenty about both these teams as this season moves forward. Can’t take either of these teams lightly.

Final
76-51 Inderkum wins

Lastly The Host Edison vs Gregori High school
Edison came out with extreme focus and with a purpose. This is a well coached team With a bunch of size and speed with a lively crowd that follows. Edison had 5 players in double digits. A well rounded win for Edison. However not to be overlooked by guard Kyle Monk (Gregori) 31 points. Edison and Coach Diondre Hawthorne is doing things right over there and will be in many conversations as teams to look out for. Edison will play Grant High Friday night 8:00pm

Final 73-54 Edison wins.

CCSF wins State/National Title

CCSF 22
RCC 19

CCSF overcame 2 huge special teams miscues that cost them 10 pts and an atrocious referee blown call which cost them 7 more. The Defense obviously played great to not allow any more points.

13-0 and hearing now its official.. National Champs!

Of note as a Northbay guy....

Jack Newman... Analy... starting QB
Elias Rantissi...Rancho Cotate...staring OLB
Dino Kahaulelio...Cardinal Newman...starting DL

They got no love in the preseason rankings..I think 17 in the state...just keep crushing everyone on the schedule all season and at the end took down the big dog San Mateo (in barn burners) twice before besting Riverside in the Final.

so CONGRATS CCSF on a great historical season!
