Will the MEL Champion be decided in week 2

Will the MEL be decided as early as week 2? Napa and Wood face off this week possibly for the MEL League Title. Who will win and why?
Will there be any contenders after this game? Vacaville looks to be struggling but still has time to pull it together can it be done?
Vintage Got routed by Wood, Armijo and Rodriguez are playing horrible. Will there be any surprises to come?
I believe Wood will win out, Napa will put up a great fight for the first half then get overrun with speed and scoring.
Vacaville just hasn't got their machine firing on all cylinders and would have to beat two really good teams in Wood and Napa.

Is Antioch High really that good?

There are a lot of questions out there if Antioch is challenging themselves during their non-league games. They have been blowing everybody out and put a hurting on Heritage but now comes the real challenges. Will Freedom come with the same intensity as they did last week to snap Antioch's 6-0 record? Will it hurt Antioch not being battle tested yet this year? Our are they just that good... Find out tonight right here on our live stream! Login to view embedded media

Placer vs Bear River

The states #3(Placer)and #5(Bear River)ranked D4 teams go at each other this next Friday nite @ BR in Lake of the Pines, this should be a doozy with both teams sporting identical 7-0 records 2-0 in the PVL(Pioneer Valley League) this game should be in this weeks pick-em as the GAME of the WEEK!What do all you guru's think? Go Placer

Division placement and school enrollment.

I believe the Sac Joaquin Section has got it right. Double the enrollment of all private schools and then put them in the Division where they should belong and that includes Coed private schools like St Mary's of Stockton, which it does. It would be no different than having two schools side by side with different genders, they would double the enrollments and move them up into a higher division. Granted they do get students that are academically inclined but they do also get very good athletes and are not restricted to boundaries like the public schools. So why does the Central Coast Section not include coed private schools to double there enrollments for the placement of divisions. Let's campare apples to apples. Private schools do have the advantage vs public schools.

Jefferson rallies to beat Carlmont

October 17, 2015, 05:00 AM By Nathan Mollat, Daily Journal
The Carlmont football team did almost everything right to beat Jefferson Friday night in Belmont. The Scots controlled the ball and the clock, ran 64 plays to the Grizzlies’ 42, out-gained Jefferson by a yard and held the normally potent Grizzlies offense to less than 300 yards of offense.
The key word here is “almost” because the only numbers that matter were on the scoreboard, and that is where Jefferson bettered the Scots — 21-14. “I believe this is a game we should have had,” said Carlmont coach Rich Gianuario. “I’m disappointed. It’s a tough loss.”

Jefferson (2-0 PAL Lake, 5-1 overall) can thank its defense and punt return unit for pulling out the win. The Grizzlies defense, despite being on the field for what seemed like the entire game, stiffened when it needed to. They stopped Carlmont (1-1, 2-4) on downs twice in the first half with the Scots driving and later the Grizzlies came away with a fumble recovery at their own 18.

“I went to my quarterback Damari (Cual-Davis) and said, ‘I think you’ve played five minutes,’” said Jefferson coach Will Maddox. But the biggest play of the game came late in the third quarter. After seeing a 7-0 halftime lead turn into a 14-7 deficit in the third, Jefferson got a 14-yard touchdown run from Cual-Davis to tie the score and about three minutes later, the Grizzlies took the lead for good. The Jefferson defense forced the Scots to punt deep in their end. The punt was short, but instead of letting the ball bounce and be downed by Carlmont, Jefferson return man David Benjamin Jr. came sprinting past midfield, fielded the ball on the dead run and bolted 45 yards for the score to put Jefferson up 21-14. “At halftime, we told them all we need is a spark,” Maddox said. “We needed someone to make a big play. That was the spark we needed.” Carlmont took the ensuing kickoff and, starting from its own 28, got as far as the Jefferson 38 before turning the ball over on downs.

With just over five minutes to play, the normally explosive Jefferson offense instead became methodical as the Grizzlies simply ran the remaining five-plus minutes off the clock to secure the victory.Cual-Davis led the Jefferson offense with 111 yards rushing on 17 carries, but he was just 7 for 11 passing for 78 yards.

“We had a good defensive game plan,” Gianuario said.

Carlmont, which racked up 242 yards rushing, was led by Jake Kumamoto, who rushed 109 yards on 21 carries. Cutler Pons had 52 yards on seven carries and scored on a 31-yard run during which he broke about six tackles as he kept his legs churning. After Jefferson forced Carlmont to punt on the first drive of the game, the Grizzlies went to work. It appeared Carlmont had them stopped and forced a punt, but a running into the punter penalty against Carlmont gave Jefferson another shot. Instead of punting, Cual-Davis hooked up Armaan Harlin for a 27-yard gain and a first down. Seven plays later, Caul-Davis found Roshawn Livingston in the front corner of the end zone for a 7-0 Jefferson lead.

The score stayed that way until the third quarter, when the Grizzlies’ inability to field a kickoff resulted in a pair of fumbles recovered by Carlmont that the Scots turned into 14 points. Carlmont recovered a fumble on the second-half kickoff and Kumamoto capped a 11-play, 37-yard drive with game-tying score from 4 yards out.

Carlmont recovered another fumble on the ensuing kickoff and this time it was Pons who used a bruising run from 31 yards out to give the Scots a 14-7 lead.

When Jefferson finally held onto the ball, it took advantage, needing just eight plays to go 68 yards. Cual-Davis tied the score at 14 following a 14-yard run, setting up Benjamin’s punt-return heroics minutes later.

“It was a tough one,” Maddox said. “We kind of underestimated these guys (Carlmont).”

From Friday Night

HMB wins on late TD October 17, 2015, 05:00 AM By Terry Bernal, Daily Journal

For all the late fireworks in Friday’s back-and-forth battle between Half Moon Bay and Menlo, the Cougars won the day with a good, old-fashioned smash mouth drive.

Half Moon Bay (2-0 PAL Ocean, 6-0 overall) claimed the upper hand in the Peninsula Athletic League Ocean Division with a thrilling 22-19 victory over Menlo (1-1, 5-1) in a battle of unbeatens.

But after the two teams combined for 10 turnovers — five apiece — the Cougars ultimately took over when Menlo turned the ball over on downs at the Half Moon Bay 32-yard line. Then senior running back Matt Spigelman — facing the first time the Cougars have had their backs up against the wall this season — put the team on his shoulders and bulled Half Moon Bay to victory.

“Every single week we’ve been ahead, so that was a good test for us,” Spigelman said.

Spigelman rushed for 135 yards on 19 carries, and it was the 135th yard that proved the most critical, as the senior capped a 13-play, 68-yard drive with a 1-yard blast into the end zone to put Half Moon Bay ahead 22-19 with 33 seconds remaining in the game.

“I thought it would be a tough game,” Half Moon Bay head coach Keith Holden said. “I didn’t think there’d be so many turnovers. We both tend to protect the ball pretty well.”

What was incredible was not just the total of 10 turnovers, but that 10 different players came up with them. Menlo linebacker Charlie Roth produced one that, at the time, was the clincher. With the Knights leading 19-15 in the fourth quarter, the senior produced a clean pick of Half Moon Bay senior quarterback Gavin Tomberlin and returned it across midfield to the Half Moon Bay 38-yard line.

Menlo simply could not move the ball against the stingy Cougars defense though. Half Moon Bay yielded just 52 yards rushing throughout, all of which were gained by Menlo running back Charlie Ferguson. The junior was the only Knights player to rush the ball in the game.

And after Menlo failed to gain so much as a first down, turning the ball over on downs, Half Moon Bay saddled up for the big finish.

“We absolutely should have converted at the end on that third down, and again on that fourth down,” Menlo head coach Mark Newton said.

Tomberlin threw four interceptions on the night, but when it came down to crunch time, the sophomore bull’s-eyed the biggest pass of his varsity career. The Cougars advanced the ball into the red zone when Spigelman juked for a 16-yard run to the Menlo 20-yard line. But after a pair of short runs by Spigelman, the Cougars got popped with a false start penalty to end up back at the 20 for fourth-and-10.

Half Moon Bay, sensing Menlo would drop its secondary into the end zone, turned to a 15-yard slant pattern to senior receiver Pablo Gutierrez. Tomberlin threaded the needle to his favorite receiver for a 14-yard pickup to the Menlo 6-yard line.

“He can do that,” Holden said of Tomberlin’s precision. “I see that in practice all the time.”

Spigelman almost got into the end zone on the following play, dashing off tackle towards apparent daylight; but Ferguson, Menlo’s middle linebacker, got ahold of Spigelman’s jersey and in a display of will and strength, dragged his opposite number long enough to allow for Menlo to stack the run at the 1-yard line.

“Our defense was stellar all night long,” Newton said.

But on the ensuing play, the right-side line of Joshua Kruckewitt and Sean Baird, along with center Kurt Katzenberger, led the way as Spigelman blasted in for the winning score.

The game opened in Half Moon Bay’s favor. After a back-and-forth of four possessions without a score, the Cougars staged a five-play, 73-yard drive with a prolific burst from Spigelman, when he busted a 55-yard touchdown run on his first carry of the night. The Knights then converted a two-point conversion to go up 8-0 with 2:35 reamining in the first quarter.

Menlo survived one of four interceptions on the following drive, and got the ball back via a Half Moon Bay punt at the 50-yard line. Morehead — who, despite his erratic night, was 19-of-35 passing for 269 yards — had completions of 23, 13 and 5 yards before Ferguson powered in for a score. But Menlo failed to convert a two-point try to trail 8-6.

Half Moon Bay answered right back. Tomberlin had a big 27-yard throw on third down to Gutierrez to sustain the drive. Then two plays later, the quarterback took a play-action sweep for the fake draw play to end all fake draw plays and dashed past the Menlo defense before anyone was the wiser for a 41-yard score, giving the Cougars a 15-6 lead.

The first half ended with a pair of turnovers, one by each team. The second half opened with another pair, one by each again.

But, at the last, after Half Moon Bay took the lead inside the last minute, it was Menlo’s final interception throw that proved the death knell to the Knights’ undeafeated season.

“You can’t have four turnovers against a really, really good team that controls the ball that well,” Newton said.

Menlo did drive downfield to make a run at it. Taking over at its own 38-yard, Mackenzie completed consecutive passes of 23 and 14 yards to the Cougars’ 25. But two plays later, on a desperation pass into the end zone with 10 seconds remaining, Gutierrez nabbed the final pick to all but end it.

Entering into play, Half Moon Bay had allowed just 13 points through five games. Menlo better than doubled that total.

“We’ve finally been challenged and came up in a tough time,” Holden said.

HMB 22 -----Menlo 19 FINAL

Hmb remains unbeaten and improves to 6-0 their best start since 1976 ! HMB lead the entire game until 8 minutes to go in the forth quarter. Then they put on one last offensive drive that almost ended at the Menlo 20. Facing a 4th and 10 With about 42 seconds remaining Tomberlin was able to find Gutierrez for a 15 gain to the Menlo 6 after 2 short runs Spegialman punched it in and that capped the 58 yard drive and ate up about 6:15 of clock. Next up the Cougars will be on the road at Woodside.

WEEK SEVEN PREDICTIONS FOR DVAL,DFAL, BVAL,EBAL AND FREELANCE

This is several days early, but I have to go out of state on business and I'll be gone for a week or so....But we have a host of interesting games for this week.
The game of the week is between Monte Vista and Foothill...again, we have two of the area's best QB's facing each other...Foothill is 7-0 while Monte Vista is 5-1, but the loss to CVC gave Monte Vista a good battle test, both QB's have good arms's and good protection, so the team with the least mistakes could be the winner...

FREELANCE
Poly of Long Beach 5-1 at DLS 5-1.......DLS 39 Poly 7...Again, it will be the Spartan defense that will contain the JackRabbits..
Kennedy 1-5 at Logan 5-2.....Logan 44 Kennedy 13...Logan missed a PAT last week that could have put the game into overtime with maybe a different result, so the Colts should come out shooting....

GAMES OF INTEREST
St. Mary's of Albany 3-3 at Hercules 5-1.....Hercules 28 St. Mary's 20......the titan's have a big line and a very fast back field with a QB that can throw a pass in the air for 40 plus yards...although Hercules gave up 300 plus yard rushing to Pinole Valley, this is a lot tougher team then the score and the defense showed....St. Mary's will be busy...
Valley Christian of Dublin 6-0 vs. John Swett 5-1 at Dougherty Valley Hi.....Valley Christian 33 John Swett 26
Both teams have been lighting up the score board, so the team with the best defense wins...
Sat. 10-7
Pinole Valley 4-2 at Salesian 3-3......Pinole Valley 49 Salesian 20.....The Spartan's have a red hot offense led by running back Michael Powell and a strong defense..

EBAL
California 5-1 at Amador Valley 4-2.....California 31 Amador Valley 14......The Grizzlie defense may be the best defense in the EBAL..
Foothill 7-0 at Monte Vista 5-1.....Monte vista 35 foothill 30.....Again, two of the area's best QB's face each other, but it will be the defense that makes the difference and this is the game of the week...
Livermore 3-4 at San Ramon Valley 1-5.....San Ramon Valley 40 Livermore 20..the wolves end the drought, but its not going to be easy as the cowboys can be dangerous....

DVAL
Ygnacio Valley 2-4 at College Park 0-6......College Park 33 Ygnacio Valley 26.....The Falcons struggle but come up with their first win and it won't be easy...
Mt. Diablo 1-5 at Concord 4-2...concord 44 Mt. Diablo 12....the Minutemen ripped College Park apart last week and will probably do the same to the Red Devils
CVC 5-1 at NorthGate 4-2.....CVC 48 NG 12......This will be the toughest defense the Bronco's will face, plus a offense that will show no mercy....

DFAL
Dougherty Valley 5-2 at Acalanes 2-4.....Acalanes 31 Dougherty Valley 13....The Don's mauled Alhambra two weeks ago but got shut out by Dublin 17-0 last week.. a shut out of Acalanes was not expected, so Acalanes will not lay down for the Wildcats..
Dublin 5-1 at Alhambra 3-4.....Dublin 35 Alhambra 13.....Dublin shows just how good the Gael defense can be against the Bulldogs....
Campolindo 6-1 at Las Lomas 1-5.....Campolindo 49 Las Lomas 7....as time goes on, the Cougars will get better and better...

BVAL
Freedom 3-3 at Antioch 6-0.....Antioch 44 Freedom 27......As many weapons that Freedom has it may not make much difference....The Panther defense has become a unit that is relentless while the offense runs wild....
Liberty 3-3 at Heritage 3-3.....Liberty 41 Heritage 30....The Lion defense gave up 37 points last week against Deer Valley but the Lions also had a commanding lead with the addition of the Pittsburg transfer on the offense...
Deer Valley 3-3 at Pittsburg 5-1.....Pittsburg 39 Deer Valley 26.....DV has a bad habit of scoring a lot of points so the Pirate defense will have to be on their toes.... .

A Football Life in the Inner City - Riordan's Raymone Sanders

I know this board take shots at each other, but I know it's all in the spirit of competitiveness and passion for one's team. Riordan has taken shots for years re poor facilities, bad coaching, changing demographics, etc. Below is a great article that illustrates the challenges of a young man growing up in San Francisco and how his school/community has provided opportunities for his future.

Newman vs Rancho

What is the scoop on these two teams? Always an interesting matchup. Rancho lost a number of good starters from last years team, and CN looks to be a little better than last year. Rancho does not look to strong this year, CN probably wins this one big.
