Harm From Baseball Concussions

Batting skills often worse than normal after players return to sport

WEDNESDAY, Nov. 26, 2014 (HealthDay News) -- Even after they're cleared to play following a concussion, baseball players' batting skills are worse than normal, which suggests they may not be fully recovered, a new study suggests.
"Although players who sustain a concussion may be symptom-free and cleared by MLB [Major League Baseball] protocol to return to play, the residual effects of concussion on the complex motor skills required for batting may still be a problem," said principal investigator Dr. Jeffrey Bazarian, an associate professor of emergency medicine at the University of Rochester in New York.
Researchers looked at 59 MLB players who suffered a concussion between 2007 and 2013. During their first two weeks back in action, the players' batting performances were much poorer than those of 63 players who had been away from the game due to the birth of a child or death of a family member.
The batting averages of the two groups were .234 vs. .264. Their slugging percentages were .359 vs. .420 and their on-base plus slugging percentages were .654 vs. .747, according to the study presented at the recent annual meeting of the American Public Health Association in New Orleans.
A batter's brain and neural networks have to be in top condition to achieve the hand-eye coordination, reaction time, body stability and balance, and swing control needed to hit a ball that takes about 400 milliseconds to travel from pitcher to batter, Bazarian said in a university news release.
After a concussion, brain function can be impaired for weeks or months. Learning more about how concussions affect batting performance can assist in determining when a concussed player is ready to return to the lineup, the study said.
After strains and bruises, concussions are the most common injuries in professional baseball, accounting for about 2 percent of all injuries that result in loss of playing time. Concussions among high school and college baseball players are rising by about 14 percent a year, the researchers said.
Data and conclusions presented at meetings are usually considered preliminary until published in a peer-reviewed medical journal.

Health Day

FOLSOM UPSET!

Hats of to Folsom this year for winning their first SFL championship and remaining undefeated so far.....
What will it take for one of the remaining NorCal playoff teams to pull off the upset of the year?
We have all seen the Folsom highlight reel this year but no one has even slowed them down.
With all the football knowledge out there let's here what it is going to take.

The Payoff Format is Flawed

Trying to keep the OLD Section playoff system in place while adding a new Regional and State Playoff is crazy. Teams that get in may or may not be the right choice and the schedule is way too long.

I say go to 8 team Section playoffs and then 4 team Regionals. If you want the other 8 section teams in a playoff to make more money have an "NIT " type toilet bowl playoff for them. If done right these regional games could make even more money than the first round section games featuring 1 vs 16, etc.

Big Changes in CCS Play-off Format

Coming soon. Big changes in CCS play-off format just approved by the CCS Football Committee. Seems like CCS staff is on board which gives this a good chance for final approval in April. Idea will be shown to CIF so that everyone agrees this new play-off format will fit within the "all section champions will participate" proposal that CIF is likely to approve. Mercury News will probably have the story tomorrow.

Not enough seating to accomadate Oakdale fans @CV

This game should have been played at a neautral site. Lincoln high school in Stockton had the bleachers to accommodate the Oakdale fans. Not only does CV get home field advantage but their bleachers only seat 1300. They are bringing in bleachers to put at the end of each endzone which we all know will be 10 rows high and virtually impossible to see the game and it seperates our fans...we should all be able to sit together and cheer on our team. CV said there was plenty of STANDING room (unbelievable)....2500 to 3000 fans will be traveling to Concord and only 1300 will get seats and the rest of Oakdale will be standing to watch a game...yeah sounds like a great atmosphere for a NorCal bowl game.

SJS five teams

SJS has five teams in Norcals CCS 0....Wow! CCS where are you? How the mighty have fallen.
laugh.r191677.gif
I suggest you stop playing amongst yourselves and schedule some teams outside the area. Bellermine V Franklin blah, blah, blah.. How about SHP vs Grant or Bellermine vs Folsom... I've been saying it for years the CCS/WCAL was overrated . The S. Bay privates finally got a taste of the SJS the last two years SI v GB & Serra v Del Oro....You sent your best against the SJS second best and got beat....Now you want SHP vs Folsom????What's the point? I really don't think the CCS/WCAL private school fan base can handle public schools handing them their lunch....Not one of you will give me credit for the end of season shutout, but most of you following my posts know I predicted the CCS getting left out in the cold....CAPPY OUT!

Nor Cal Top Talent

Name your favorite players for 2014 that you have seen play. List name, Year, school, vitals, stats, and something that stood out to you.

Here are some I've seen and liked this season.

OFFENSE

QB: Mason Randall #12 Year: JR School: SHP Vitals: 6'2" 165 Stats: 120.3 QB Rating 2077 Yds 16.8Ave only 2 Int 14TDs
13-0 season CCS Open Champ
Player Highlights: Stood tall delivered the ball with accuracy, moved well extended plays threw on the run well, and had a strong arm. With some work in the weight room and another inch of height he should be a D-1 prospect

RB: Damon Lewis #13 Year:JR School: Wood Vitals: 5'6" 165 Stats: 122 Carries 1132 Yds 9.3 YPC 22 Rec 204Yds 12 TDs
7-5 season 2nd round playoffs
Player Highlight: This kid is very quick and elusive has explosive speed and seems hard to tackle. He had excellent vision. His feet look like road runner they move so fast. He posed a dual threat catching balls out of the back field (he had a foot injury and missed 5 or 6 games) Wth 1 season left If he grows some he should be a D1 prospect.

WR: Trey Udoffia #3 Year:JR School: Del Oro Vitals: 6'1" 180 Stats: 48 Rec 924 Yds 19.3 Ave 11 TDs
6-6 season 2nd round of playoffs SJS
Player Highlight: This kid comes down with the ball when he goes up double coverage or not. Runs crisp routes and gets into and out of his breaks quick and clean. Gets off the bump well and shows strength vs aggressive DBs. shows good open field speed and excellent hands. With 1 season remaining has potential to be a D-1 prospect Also plays good D and is a very versatile player.

TE: Zach Myers #80 Year:SO School: Vacaville Vitals: 6'1" 215 Stats: 4 Rec 49 Yds 12.3 Ave Crap Load of Pancake Blocks and dominated the edge for Vacaville's wing-t running game
10-3 season 3rd round of playoffs SJS
Player Highlight: This kid is a beast for a sophomore blocks well and can move bodies. If this kid grows some and improves his Rec stats he will be a D-1 prospect. He also played well at DL and at Lb in a back up role.

OL: Darrin Paulo #77 Year:SR School: Grant Vitals: 6'5" 315 Stats: Crap Load of Pancakes, Dominated most opponents.
14-0 season (as of date) SJS DII Champ
Player Highlight: This kid is a beast he moves good and works his way down field wrecking anything in site. The coaching staff moves him and tips their play because he is so dominate it doesn't seem to matter if the D knows where hes blocking. Very impressive, Lbs and Safeties beware this kid gets down field. Obviously size, strength, and speed this kid is a top D-1 prospect.

DEFENSE

DL: Nobody popped off the field in games I saw.

LB: Cameron Smith #5 Year:SR School: Granite Bay Vitals:6'3" 240 Stats:148 tackles 11.4Tckl/game 4Int 4Forced fumbles 2 fumble recovery's 3 defensive TDs 9-4 record 3rd round of SJS playoffs
Player Highlight: This kid seems to lure the QB to throw where he wants and breaks on the ball. exceptional size and speed this kid is a real run stopper who can cover well. He is very impressive to watch he has great instincts. He is a top D-1 prospect

DB: Amaurie Johnson #31 Year:SR School: Vacaville Vitals:5'9" 165 Stats: 64 tackles 5.3 Tckl/game 1Int 7 Pass Defended
10-3 record 3rd round of SJS playoffs
Player Highlight: This kid has good coverage and excellent make up speed, he breaks on the ball well. Undersized but has excellent speed this kid is a good open field tackler who can cover well. He was a very business as usual player he has great instincts. He is a D-2/D-3 prospect due to his lack of height. I feel like his stats suffered because QBs tended not to throw at him due to good coverage.

So who stood out in the games you saw??
