Milpitas vs. Serra - Consolation JOKE

Milpitas will play Serra tomorrow in a "consolation game." The problem is, one team is playing all of its starters and out for blood, while the other has a laundry lists of injuries and will be starting their JV OL. The game will be a farce and now the risk of injuries will be greatly increased, so much so that one team will not start their QB because of the JV OL that will be playing.

Thank you CCS and Nancy. Your POS idea has completely endangered kids. You can't even get your section champion into a bowl game but you have decided to do a dry run to get your losers in the future. Your greed and lack of foresight is endangering kids. I hope these teams make a mockery of the game that is one to begin with.

Maybe we can have another thrilling game like tonight where one team plays its starters, while the other plays a JV team. One team will get crushed, and the other will be thrilled at their awesome performance. And Prep2Prep has the audacity/stupidity to broadcast this? For what? It's a joke.

Great job CCS, you have put the kids at risk. I pray that someone doesn't get seriously injured tomorrow. It's funny... normally the CCS reps walk around and strut like they own the damned place. Last week, the rep literally walked in, collected the money, and got out of dodge. It makes me sick!

Grandpa's Pants/CCS/Open Div

The insistence of the CCS to have an open division reminds me a lot of my Grandfather…..God rest his soul. Grandpa had a pair of old polyester pants that were way out of style. In spite of pleading by my Grandmother, his children and grandchildren Grandpa refused to get with the times and buy a new, more modern pair of pants.

The CCS is like my Grandfather. They refuse to change with the times. Many schools, football coaches and most importantly the players really want to have the opportunity to play for a state title. For the CCS to deny that they feel this way shows how out of touch they are with athletics.

CCS officials have been around for a long time. They have made some very good decisions and seem to almost always have the best interest of student-athletes when they make decisions. Not in this instance. It sounds like the CCS was very close to eliminating the Open last year but the Board of Managers decided against this. What changed? Could the CCS officials have urged them to vote that way? Does the section need an infusion of youth to go along with the older, experienced, polyester- wearing officials?

My Humble Opinion

Sacred Heart Prep

I didn't really think I'd feel this way if Grant won. Grant is higher ranked and has played a better SOS. I'm not too overly influenced about the SJS getting a 2nd team vs the CCS Open winner.

I am influenced by being underwhelmed by Grant's sectional game, taking two goal line stands to win by a score over a team that has a loss to a team with 5 CCS losses.

I like SHP's story and would most prefer they play in NorCal's D3 game, but that's not going to happen.

What's swaying me are the reports regarding Grant's lack of sportsmanship.

I'm not a CIF criteria expert, but I know that sportsmanship is a criteria. Grant v SHP is a fair discussion just with regards to which team is stronger and deserves it more based on results on the field. Whether it's a factor or not (minor for me), they are the CCS team. If CIF doesn't go with SHP, they need to just eliminate sportsmanship from the criteria, because if it doesn't apply now, I'm not sure when it would.

Disclaimer: I'm basing my opinion of what I'm reading off this board -- I didn't see the game.

Besides sportsmanship, I think the appeal of a Folsom-Grant showdown at Sac St. drawing 20k+ crazy SJSers to a classic is wishful thinking. I think Folsom would roll Grant by at least 4 TDs. I think they'd do the same thing to SHP, but SHP is a good story that doesn't deserve their season to be over when they have a similar enough resume to SJS's 2nd team that apparently lost their cool last night.

Open Division MUST Go

What is the purpose of the Open Division? At one point it was to separate public from private. It was the goal of many to throw the WCAL teams and the powerful public schools together and allow the other publics to compete in the other divisions. How is that working out with St.Francis, Mitty, and St. Ignatius in the finals at the lower divisions?
I do not know what will happen tomorrow with the vote to see who gets to represent Div 1 in the play in game but if SHP is left out.....which is a strong possibility because the small school would have a very hard time matching up to Folsom...it will be a TRAGEDY If they do not get to go on. WHAT A GREAT D-3 TEAM SHP WOULD BE THIS YEAR!!! The Open Division would prevent that from happening.

CCS officials must acknowledge that teams want to be able to extend their seasons and play in the play-in games and possibly the state title game. Below are some very interesting comments from some very well respected public school coaches that feel the time is now to eliminate the open and go to enrollment based playoffs. The article was on Prep2Prep's website.

Milpitas
coach Kelly King did not return a call left on his cell phone seeking
comment, but Trojan assistant coach Vito Cangemi did. Cangemi said the
issue is less about injuries and a forfeit and more about the Open
Division itself which he thinks should not exist. His contention is the
Open Division cuts down on the number of CCS teams that can possibly
make the CIF-State bowl derby when compared to other sections that don't
have an Open Division and go simply by enrollment.

"I
heard (Serra) canceled and decided to forfeit," Canjemi said shortly
after noon today. "I think it all stems from the decision to have a
consolation round. The Open Division needs to go away."

Canjemi
thinks having strictly enrollment-based divisions with no Open makes
sense because some public schools are as at least as strong as the best
of the WCAL and that having strictly enrollment divisions might have
produced some compelling game pitting WCAL and public schools. The
results partially bear Canjemi out as Milpitas defeated two of the three
WCAL teams it played season and Los Gatos knocked off three WCAL
schools.

_____________________________________________________________________________________________

"I was part of the
committee that voted for enrollment-based playoffs," Krail said. "But it
didn't make it through the Board of Managers. They decided to tweak the
Open Division and come up with something to help teams forced into the
Open Division qualify for NorCal games (in future years). But the flawed
idea to me was the trial run (this season). That was unsettling to
me."

Inderkum/Oakdale winner to NorCal Bowl

I have yet to see a convincing argument for picking Enterprise over the Inderkum/Oakdale winner. For a full analysis
feel free to go to Facebook and look up Guy Lilly post. Right now I just want to address today's article claiming the two
Tri-County victories by Pleasant Valley (who Enterprise beat) is a major factor in support of Enterprise. Yuba City and River Valley are competitive teams but not something to "hang your hat on". I will use one fact to put this to rest hopefully, though
there are others, including 5-6 and 6-5 records. Rio Linda beat Yuba City. Indy and Oakdale both demolished Rio Linda.
Feel free to check out Calpreps Freeman Report for comparison data.

Sacred Heart Prep downs the Bells

"Some scoffed when Sacred
Heart Prep received the top seed in an Open Division dominated through the
years by teams from the West Catholic Athletic League".... "All the credit goes to
Sacred Heart," Bellarmine coach Mike Janda said. "They had a great
defensive plan. They did a good job of taking away some of the things that we
wanted to do. We just didn't get it done. But the fact of that matter is, they
didn't let us."

Dumb question

Besides DLS, I hear about Serra, Mitty, Valley Christian, Bellarmine, St. Francis, St. Ignatius, Riordan, SHC & SHP from the Bay area. Without specific knowledge, it appears that these are all private schools.

Here in the SJS we hear about Folsom, Grant, Rocklin, GB, Vacaville, etc. In the world of "big boy" football in the SJS, Jesuit and St. Mary's are generally the only parochial schools in the conversation.

On to the dumb question; Are there any good public school programs in the Bay Area? Who are they? Is it that all of the talent goes private, or are the public schools the $hits academically? What gives?

Clayton Valley vs. Concord Predictions

Based on the last two meetings this should be a hell of a ballgame with a ton of offensive firepower.

CV won their regular season match-up 48-40 behind an incredible performance by Miles Harrison - 336 yards rushing and five touchdowns (5 Rushing, 1 Kick-Return)

Last's years regular season match-up was also won by CV 49-48 that came down to a failed 2-pt conversion by Minutemen.

Clayton is the Leading rushing team in the nation averaging 456.6 yards a game. They have put 605 points on the board while defeating Tracy, Cardinal Newman, Napa, Carson, and Concord.

Concord's high powered offense is led by QB Mitchell Daniels who is 18th in the Nation in passing yards. The Minutemen have put 622 points on the board, there best two victories are against Pinole Valley and Granada, both with losing records. The key is their narrow loss to CV.

CV has a slightly better defense, but this game will come down to a few key stops and turnovers.

Prediction CV-50 Concord-38

Cal State East Bay signs Boys BB standout

BY: Kevin McCarthy

Among the number of northern California basketball prospects who signed on with the colleges of their choice back in November is one that was little noted but just may be long remembered. That being Tracy High's Druce Asah to Cal State University East Bay (CSUEB).

The 6-foot-3 guard is one of those prospects with a very solid projection based on a combination of excellent athleticism and strong work ethic.

Here's Tracy Coach Junior Cueva: "Druce is a great kid who can put the ball in the hole. As a sophomore on varsity, he scored six points a game. This past season it was 18. He spent the summer between his sophomore and junior years in the gym working his butt off and Druse will get better in the next two or three years. He has great elevation on his jumper."

Cueva added, "I'm big on having guys watch film and that's helped in Druce knowing where to get his shots on the floor and how to play on the defensive end, like understanding what to do on the pick-and-roll."

A degree of Asah's anonymity is because he played spring and summer with the BFS Blackout Elite which isn't noted as one of the most publicized AAU teams. But Asah earned First Team All Tri-City Athletic League after last season at Tracy and tallied 28 points built on a foundation of eight treys versus Oakdale last January.

So why the choice of the Pioneers?

"They showed me so much love and we're really into me," Asah explained. "I could see achieving my goals in life with them if I am willing to work hard. They will help me grow as a person."

Ask for his best attributes, he offered, "Trying to find a way to score and not backing down to any type of challenge. I continue to go at it."

He envisions playing in the backcourt for Coach Gus Argenal either as a combo guard or point. "I'm working to get better with my handle."

Asah cites Cueva as his biggest basketball influence, noting specifically that "he saw it [the opportunity for a college scholarship] coming before I did." Conveying that future possibility madeAsah work even harder.

At CSUEB, he is looking to major in business. The relationship there? "My stepdad is a businessman and entrepreneur."

Do remember to check out who and what Asah is on the court come say 2017. If his past is prologue, the Pioneers just got a good one.

State Bracket - Division III

WCAL 2014 - Returning Impact Players for 2015

WEST CATHOLIC ATHLETIC LEAGUE 2014 FOOTBALL PRE-SEASON PREVIEW

Looking ahead to the start of the 2014 season the WCAL race this season figures to be highly competitive as always and also difficult to predict accurately. Like the 2013 season 5 teams will likely be among the top 10 teams in the CCS both at the start and end of the season. Here is how the 2013 season ended for Varsity, JV & Frosh in order of overall finish:

VARSITY: Serra, Mitty, Valley Christian, Bellarmine, St. Francis, St. Ignatius, Riordan, SHC

JUNIOR VARSITY: Bellarmine, Valley Christian, Mitty, SHC, St. Ignatius, Riordan, St. Francis, Serra

FROSH: Valley Christian, St. Francis, Serra, Bellarmine, St. Ignatius, Mitty, Riordan, SHC

2013 Ending Season Records, 2013 Final Power Ranking, 2014 Pre-season Power Ranking:

Serra:
record 11-3, 2013 power ranking 51.7, 2014 starting power ranking 47.4
Mitty:
record 11-2, 2013 power ranking 48.6, 2014 starting power ranking 48.1
VC: record 8-4, 2013 power ranking 39.2, 2014 starting power ranking 39.8
Bells:
record 8-4, 2013 power ranking 38, 2014 starting power ranking 33.4
SF:
record 9-4, 2013 power ranking 34.4, 2014 starting power ranking 36.1
SI: record 4-9, 2013 power ranking 24.1, 2014 starting power ranking 33.9
Riordan: record 3-7, 2013 power ranking 8.8, 2014 starting power ranking 2.4
SHC:
record 2-8, 2013 power ranking 11.7, 2014 starting power ranking 16.9

High's & Low's 2013 Season by Team:

Serra:
Mostly high's in record setting season with close loss to DLS 21-14, exciting upset loss to SF 41-34 and a tough loss in regional match-up vs Del Oro 28-20. Serra's RB converted to QB Matt Fa'aita threw for the 4th most yards in Serra history in his first year as QB [with 2 of the 3 QB's ahead of him having made it to the NFL].

Mitty: Mitty had an excellent season with just 2 losses, both to a Serra team that arguably is the best team in Serra's history,
losing 31-7 in regular season and 21-7 in the CCS Open Championship. Mitty however was impressive throughout most of the 2013 season with the exception of the lopsided 31-7 loss at Serra. The CCS Open championship was a different story in which Mitty led going into the 4th quarter by 7-0 after a long TD run by RB Dakari Monroe. Unluckily for Mitty in its biggest game of the year the Monarch's were without an experienced QB - with capable starter Trent Scharrenberg out injured, back-up QB also injured limited to run plays and a JV QB brought in only for a few pass plays. Mitty played outstanding in this game and likely with Scharrenberg may have taken the Padres down.

Valley Christian: The Warriors had a somewhat up & down season with some injuries, most noticeable to stand-out RB Kirk Johnson who was sorely missed in several games. VC also had 2 other capable RB's in Tre McCloud & Mark Quimby who also both return this season. VC had an early loss to Vacaville [20-17] a lopsided losses to Serra [28-7] and a close loss to Mitty [14-13] before being overwhelmed by MItty in the CCS Open semi-final by 37-7. VC's high point came in their upset win over previously unbeaten Terra Nova by 26-7 in the first round of CCS playoffs.

Bellarmine: A tough year for the WCAL champs the previous 2 seasons in tying for 4th place in the WCAL. Losing a lot of talent to graduation from the previous season the Bells relied on the QB K.J. Carta-Samuels who simply did not have the skill players of the previous season resulting in a sporadic passing game and not enough big plays when needed. The Bells played tough as always losing 2 tough games to Serra as well as to VC [31-13] and worst loss of the season to Mitty by 34-7.

St. Francis: The Lancers proved tough as always in 2013 and if not for 3 close losses in WCAL play would have battled for the league title. The Lancers once again shocked top ranked Serra in one of the season's best games on the Lancers Senior night by outscoring the Padres 41-34 [against a Serra defense that was holding opponents to under 14 points on average]. The Lancers 3 league losses were Mitty 13-12, VC 21-14, Bells 21-14. SF entered Div II playoffs as the favored team and cruised through the first 2 rounds before a surprising upset to Los Gatos by 31-14 in the championship game.

St. Ignatius: The Wildcats were a very good but very inconsistent team for 2013 in playing well but not for 4 quarters in many games. Their record of 4-9 is deceiving and could have been 7-6 if not for mistakes and sheer bad luck. SI's 2 worst losses came at the hands of non-league foe Terra Nova 50-33 and then Mitty in league play 34-16. Despite their record SI qualified for the Div. III playoffs and played perhaps their best game of the year in disposing of previously unbeaten Burlingame by 41-21 on Burlingame's home field before a stunned crowd of Panther fans. SI in a mild upset lost a close battle to a very under-rated Aptos team by 41-35 in the Div. III Championship game.

Riordan: The Crusader's fans endured another draining season as the new coaching staff tried to instill a new system. As often the case new coach + new system = same old results [unfortunately]. Riordan with a weak pre-season, but still lost badly to St. Mary's/Berekely by 49-7 in what had to be a sobering moment for the entire Crusader nation. Riordan in league play had 6 losses by an average of 36 points or 5 TD's to the top tier teams of the WCAL. Easily the high point was the upset of the SHC Irish by 24-21 on Riordan's home field - the Crusader's first WCAL win in 3 seasons.

Sacred Heart Cathedral: The Irish struggled through a tough season with an under-manned and out-sized team. As with the previous 2012 season the Irish best football appeared to be early in the season before the tough opponents of the WCAL took its toll, losing 6 league games to top tier teams by an average of 32 points per game. After 2 easy pre-season wins SHC played its best game of the year in a narrow loss to a very good Milpitas team - the same Milpitas team which won the CCS Div. I championship beating San Benito by 37-7 [yes the last place WCAL team played the Div. I champs down to the wire in the 3rd game of the 2013 season].

Looking Forward:
In terms of overall strength and returning talent the teams returning the most veteran players to varsity this season are Mitty, St. Francis, VC, SI & Serra in that order. The teams likely to get the most help from their JV teams from last year would be
Bells, VC, Mitty, SHC & Riordan. Serra's JV team surprisingly went 0-10 and was the only winless JV in the WCAL.
While Frosh teams do not generally contribute to varsity teams the following year there are always exceptions - with VC's Frosh team going undefeated and Serra's Frosh having 1 loss only to De La Salle these 2 teams may likely contribute a player or 2 at the higher level.

The initial assessment of teams based upon last seasons results, returning players this season and success of last year's JV teams is that that Mitty is the favored team this year in WCAL. Again Serra and VC figure to be in the running with St. Francis, then SI and Bells following the pack in that order. Riordan and SHC are again looking at challenging season's and once again IMO Riordan looks to be overall the stronger/deeper team at the lower end of the spectrum. The X-factor once again will be the QB's of the league as the RB's are already set with VC & Serra having the best RB's by committee.

Next Up:
I'll have my own further predictions & team by team assessments in coming weeks breaking down each team with its own strengths & weaknesses & upcoming pre-season foes to start the season. That's it for now.
