Each Sections NorCal Eligibility

Presented are each Sections' NorCal playoff eligibility criteria. Not saying which ones better. Some are geared toward advancing the stronger school teams regardless of enrollment size, others favor a more enrollment "equity."

Central Coast Section (CCS): Total of 21 Teams per State CIF Blue Pages
All eight Open division teams (8 teams)
Finalists in Divisions 1 - 5 (10 teams)
Three (3) semifinalists from Divisions 1 - 5 who do not advance to the CCS finals (3 teams)
Note: does not specify the criteria how those three semifinalists are selected.

North Coast Section (NCS): Total of 25 Teams per State CIF Blue Pages
All six teams competing in the Open division (6 teams)
Finalists in Divisions 1 - 3 (6 teams)
and the final four (4) teams (semifinalists) competing in NCS Divisions 4-6 will receive automatic berths (12 teams)
The 25th entry will be assigned to the highest seeded (smallest number) semifinal losing team in Divisions 1-3 only.

Sac-Joaquin Section (SJS): Total of 23 Teams per State CIF Blue Pages
Finalists from Divisions 1 - 5 (10 teams)
Semifinalists from Divisions 1 -5 (10 teams)
Finalists from Division 6 (2 teams)
One "at-large" team with the highest MaxPreps ranking not advancing to the semifinals.

North Section (NS): Total of 10 Teams per North Section Rules; 12 Teams per State CIF Blue Pages
Note: North Section does not have any D1 - D2 schools based on enrollment
Finalists from Divisions 3 - 5 (6 teams)
Semifinalist loser with the best seed (smallest number) from Divisions 3 -5 (3 teams)
Either the other Semifinalist loser from Division 4 and from Division 5, using a tie-breaking formula (1 team)
or the other Semifinalist loser from D3, if the D4 or D5 team above opts-out

San Francisco Section: Total of 2 Teams
Section Finalists (2 teams) - The S.F. section only consists of 10 schools/teams
Lowell and Immaculate Conception should be finalists

Oakland Section: Total of 2 Teams
Section Finalists (2 teams) - The Oakland section only consists of 8 girls basketball schools/teams
Oakland Tech will win section easily--excellent schedule strength (dangerous team);
KIPP King Oakland should be other finalist

NCS Predictions

Here are my picks for the finals an winners plus a non-top four team to watch

Open: Campolindo over De La Salle. Hard to have an underdog in the Open bracket, but Northgate is intersting

Division I: Clayton Valley Charter over Moreau Catholic. Outside of Moreau, I think Monte Vista is dangerous at No. 11

Divisison II: San Ramon Valley over Salesian. Not a deep bracket, but No. 5 Alameda is a lower team to watch

Division III: SPSV over Piedmont. Archie Williams is at No. 4, but they could pose problems with their size.

Division IV: University over Marin Catholic. No. 8 St. Mary's has four of its 6 losses to ranked teams.

Division V: Cloverdale over Head-Royce

Please help

Ok so could someone please explain to me how SPSV isn’t in the Open division? 19-1 with the only loss being to the #2 team in Arizona. Champs of the TCAL rock, defending ncs D3 champs. They’ve been a solid program for years and finally broke thru and knocked off Salesian only to get hosed by the NCS folks. So you’re telling me a 5th place team in the EBAL is better than the 1st place team in the TCAL? I didn’t watch tooooo too much high school hoops but if 925 is that dominating compared to other parts of the section then I really need to start checking out more tri valley games. I understand their schedule was pretty soft and this worst Salesians record has been in a long long time. I get that. But to split the 6 automatic NorCal berths between 2 leagues is pretty lame.

Fight Night in Daly City

Last night's Westmoor-Jefferson game was stopped with 5:52 remaining in the fourth quarter after a fight broke out in the crowd. Jefferson led 57-37 at the time. Would love to know more from anyone who was there. The NFHS camera caught bits and pieces of it, but I couldn't see all of it. It was in the crowd up above the Westmoor bench. Looks like coaches were able to keep players from getting involved, thanks in part to the elevated seating at Jefferson's gym.

Curious to see if this affects either team moving forward. Westmoor still has a makeup game against El Camino scheduled for Monday. Jefferson is set to compete in the CCS Division III playoffs. Hopefully a few idiots in the crowd won't take opportunities away from these kids.

East Union & Burbank SJS D3

Just left Burbank game vs East Union Manteca. Burbank looks solid and well coached. East Union not to much of a challenge . Just wondering how did East union get in. They did not look like a playoff team , several of us in stands were talking about it. Not well coached and they looked lost. They had no bench and starting 5 played most of the game. Not too much talent on East Union team . They at least got into playoff so they must of did something good to get in. Give credit to Burbank ,they had a good game plan. I see Burbank making some waves.Looking to see next game for Burbank.

CCS Open Seedings

CCS Open Seedings Announced! Santa Cruz elects to remain in DIII. Valley Christian now the #8 seed.
  1. Mitty
    • The team to beat! Good senior leader in Burke and a solid supporting cast that share the ball and D it up!
  2. Sacred Heart Prep
    • The lone non-WCAL team. Very impressive non-league record and breezed through its league. Beat Riordan and St. Francis and lost to Bellarmine. Can the Gators keep up their winning ways against the battle-tested WCAL teams?
  3. Riordan
    • Like Mitty, lost 4 starters entering this season and finished 2nd in the WCAL. Everyone knows the Crusader offense is King Wilhite. Riordan will need to counter the Wilhite double teams by moving the ball and other players stepping up. Going to man defense and its depth has been the constant for this team.
  4. St. Ignatius
    • Wildcats on a mission to shock the world in its pool it shares with Mitty to make an appearance in Santa Cruz. SI will get its rematch with Serra Friday night in the Sunset.
  5. Serra
    • Padres dealt a devastating blow losing its best player and big man. Didn't seem to faze them last night. Never count out a Coach Rapp-led Padres team.
  6. St. Francis
    • The Lancers simply haven't been able to put things together as they have been injury-plagued the past 2 seasons. SF only has to look to 2 seasons ago when they upset the Crusaders. Can it happen again?
  7. Bellarmine
    • The Bells aren't the same team we've seen the past few years, but they have a very solid group of players and can upset any one in the Open. See SHP.
  8. Valley Christian
    • Head scratcher, but gotta give the Warriors credit for taking on the challenge. Would have been my darkhorse if their big man Bannarbie was still playing...

CCS Open Pool Play format - higher seed the home team:
Pool A
1. Mitty
4. St. Ignatius
5. Serra
8. Valley Christian

Pool B
2. Sacred Heart Prep
3. Riordan
6. St. Francis
7. Bellarmine

Elk Grove beats Jesuit 53-51 in OT

Elk Grove overcame a tough close to Q4 to win at Jesuit 53-51 in overtime to remain tied in the loss column with Sheldon in the Delta League.

Elk Groce got out to an 11-0 lead and led 29-16 at the half. Ameere Britton had 15 points in the first half and ended with 24 points to go with six rebounds, five assists and three steals. Dajon Lott had six points, nine rebounds and three blocks.

Jesuit was carried by Andrej Stojakovic, who is a really smooth scorer in the mid-range and finishing off drives and putbacks. Kai Wallin gave the Marauders a physical inside threat who matched up well with Lott. Junior guard Owen Ubaldo is another ball handler with some size.

The Marauders got back into the game with an 8-2 run to start Q3 and scoring the final six points of the third.

CCS Open -- Round Robin

Here's the blank bracket

Two pools. Pool A is #1, #4, #5 and #8 seed. Pool B is #2, #3, #6 and #7

The "winners" of the pools play in the finals.

Kinda like it, assuming everyone's clear on tiebreakers. More good games to watch/play. Woe be unto #8 who will have to run the WCAL holy trinity.
