Most dominant prep players you've ever seen/played against?

As the playoffs begin, im making plans of going out to Antioch and watching Najee Harris. I think he is by far the most special talent to come out of the bay in a long time. Got me wondering whos the most dominant player youve ever seen at the prep level.

Saw in person
: Ben Burr-Kirven. He was in The PAL during my time coaching within the league. What an animal. Hell of an athlete, smart player and extremely tenacious. I cant tell you how many times i chewed a kid out on the sideline: fumble, getting hawked from behind, missing a block only for them to respond with a deer and headlights look and say "Coach, Sunshine just came out of nowhere!"

Marcus Peters. Dominating in The OAL isnt exactly hard. I'll never forget the day McClymonds and Marcus Peters legitimized themselves in my eyes. I played against that McClymonds team with "The Big 3" (NaDerris Ward, Derrick Hill, Joshua Tatum). But as good as that team was and those guys were, none ever had a game while facing a challenge like Peters did the day McClymonds went to Pittsburg and upset the Pirates with only 19 guys in pads. And Peters was a man amongst boys that day. Been a fan of the kid ever since.

Saw on TV: Vontaze Burfict. First time i ever saw Burfict play with in the CIF Division1 game vs. De La Salle before the inauguration of the open division. All i could remember thinking was that the guy was unreal. Not only did he have a nose for the ball, he finished with authority. He was only a junior and i followed him closely the next year and he did not disappoint. He put on tackling clinics throughout the state his senior year.

Maurice Drew. Probably the first high school game i ever saw. Biggest memory i have of that game is Darnell Bing walking around with a "DREW WHO?" Tail pad and getting straight trucked by Drew on a 4th and short. I was in middle school around that time and was a fan of the guy from that point going forward. One of the most complete players i've ever seen.

Played with or Against: Jahvid Best. I tackled some really good backs in my time playing. Amongst them was Tyreece Jacks (Woodside), Matagni Tonga (Aragon) and Willie Griffin (McClymonds)...but none were as frustrating to tackle as Jahvid "The Jet" Best. You couldnt get a good enough angle on that guy to hit him and when you did his legs were strong enough to drive him another few yards. Really sad how his career panned out in the NFL. He would have been great.

Frank Summers. Behind every great player there is one in his shadow who was as good or better. Despite being the #2 back in the country and someone consistently said is better than Adrian Peterson, Marshawn Lynch was not the hardest tackle in The OAL. That honor belonged to Frank "The Tank" Summers of John Beam's then powerhouse, Skyline Titans. Never played with or against Marshawn by Frank was at Laney College my freshman year and my fondest memory of him is seeing him knock out linebacker after linebacker during 2 a days. Ive seen prep highlights of both and as great as Marshawn is, I'd much rather try to tackle him than Frank Summers.

PCAL Week 3

PCAL Week 3

So COVID has really started to interfere with PCAL football. This past weekend 2 more games were cancelled; Carmel vs MVC and SLV vs Los Altos. SLV has had its first 2 games of the year cancelled, while Carmel has already cancelled is Game with King City this weekend, North Salinas has also canceled its game at Atascadero. Disappointing in a sport where you only get +/-10 games or so that these kids have to miss any time. But it is better than last year.

I have to say what Aptos did Campolindo last week was just nasty, 49-0, wow. Campo has been one of the most consistent programs over the past 10 years and to have the barn doors blown off like that is amazing. The top of the Gabilan is going to be fun, and they start division play this week!!

Last week: 13-3 Overall 27-5

Gabilan

Thu 09/09 Seaside (CA) at Alvarez (Salinas, CA), 7:00pm – Seaside lost a close one to Monterey, their schedule does not get any easier. This maybe their best chance for a division win. But I just don’t see it. Alvarez 24-10

Fri 09/10 Palma (Salinas, CA) at Aptos (CA), 7:30pm: Way to start division play off with a bang! It is one thing to dominate an undermanned Mills team 49-0, but to do it to a team like Campolindo!! Palma, has 2 quality wins, including a blowout of Mitty. But Aptos just seems to be at a different level. I like the Mariners here. Aptos 35-24

Fri 09/10 San Benito (Hollister, CA) at Christopher (Gilroy, CA), 7:30pm: Hollister must maintain momentum and not have let down after their big win vs Wilcox. If they do have a letdown Christopher is good enough to pull the upset. Hollister 28-16

Fri 09/10 Monte Vista Christian (Watsonville, CA) at Salinas (CA), 7:30pm: Two teams coming off unscheduled Byes, Salinas had a nice road win 2 weeks ago vs a good Half Moon Bay team, while MVC dominated an average North Monterey County Team. I think Salinas depth will eventually tire out the Mustangs. Salinas 35-28

Mission

Fri 09/10 North Salinas (Salinas, CA) at Atascadero (CA), 7:00pm- Game canceled due to NS Covid Cases

Fri 09/10 Greenfield (CA) at Gonzales (CA), 7:30pm- They should play for the Swiss Sausage Sandwich Trophy, as both schools have some of the best. Gonzales lost to PG last week while Greenfield got beat up by King City. Take the Spartans in close one. Gonzales 21-20

Fri 09/10 Soquel (CA) at Harbor (Santa Cruz, CA), 7:30pm; Can Harbor be stopped? 2 in a row!!! I like the way Harbor scheduled 2 very winnable games to start the year. It’s a good way to build confidence, but now they are playing a better team. Soquel gets its first W this season. Soquel 35-7

Fri 09/10 Carmel (CA) at King City (CA), 7:00pm; Game Cancelled due to Covid at both Schools

Fri 09/10 Monterey (CA) at North Monterey County (Castroville, CA), 7:30pm: Monterey is off to a 2-0 start, and had a nice win last week vs their rival Seaside. MVC bounced back form a big loss with a win over an average Pajaro team. Monterey goes to 30. Monterey 30-20

Fri 09/10 Watsonville (CA) at Santa Cruz (CA), 7:30pm; Santa Cruz is the team to beat in the Mission. Santa Cruz 48-7

Cypress

Fri 09/10 Pajaro Valley (Watsonville, CA) at Pacific Grove (CA), 7:00pm- PG had a nice win last week vs Gonzales, Pajaro stayed competitive with NMC. I hate doing it, but; PG 28-20

Fri 09/10 San Lorenzo Valley (Felton, CA) at Richmond (CA), 7:00pm – I believe this game is still on, as SLV looks to take the field for the first time due to COVID. No truth to the rumors that SLV was just repairing headsets. Richmond 17-10

Sat 09/11 Sobrato (Morgan Hill, CA) at Rancho San Juan (Salinas, CA), 1:00pm – Rancho San Juan finally got a first down and scored vs Woodside last week. I think they will get their first win this year, just not this week. Sobrato 28-17

Santa Lucia

Fri 09/10 St. Francis (Watsonville, CA) at Mission Prep (San Luis Obispo, CA), 7:00pm: Mission Prep is small Private school in SLO, some years they are very good and some very bad. Unfortunately for St. Francis, this year they are shaping up to be very good. Mission Prep 45-7

My idea of Friday Night Lights

Just posting my thoughts. Friday night lights to me is small town football. Last week game I am sitting talking to a lady. Very pleasant lady. Talking to me like she has known me all my life. Knows my family? My friend at the of the night my friend says you never realized that's my wife's mon! She had known me all my life.
I got into watching HS football when my nephews started playing in Oakdale.. I teach Sunday school. And talked about football game. Next Sunday one if the mom's was telling me how the boy kept talking about football. So tje next week the boys and I went to a game.. I bought the programs and the boys went out and got the players to sign them. These kids think these kids are super stars. Parents get pictures of their kids signing autographs!
And I used to see Merzon at his kids activities. I also go watch my kid in music programs. His kids were involved in the program when younger.
HS football to me is more about friends family and tradition. Talking to guys that went to high school with your father. And talking about our coaches. Priceless!
