Specialization vs. Multiple Sports Athlete

I was conversing with someone today about kids who specialize early vs. those who are multi-sports athletes. The conversation started because, in the chronicle today, there's a 14- to 15-year-old kid from the Bay Area kid named McKenna Whitham who signed a professional contract with Gotham FC (NWSL team). In the article, she said she had been playing since she was 4 years old and "training" since she was 6. We all know (or should know) what the studies say about specialization and how it can lead to burnout/injuries if they start at young ages, but yet we see the trend more and more in sports like basketball and soccer. Can you name the last multi-sport athlete who attended a power-5 conference out of high school? Should athletes specialize to get the ultimate prize of a scholarship?

St. Marys vs. Grand Canyon

The St. Mary's vs. Grand Canyon 1st Round NCAA tourney game should be a fun one. Both teams have Kids with Bay Area ties. Obviously Aidan Mahaney for the Gaels and Jovan Blacksher Jr. PG of GCU is originally from Oakland. I've watched both kids since they were 10yrs old. Blacksher is a former WAC Tourney MVP with NCAA Tourney experience. The Gaels better be careful!!

ENROLLMENT-BASED AND COMPETITIVE EQUITY-BASED DIVISIONS

Coaches,

Thoughts on the recent NCS proposal that was adopted:
1) Returns to enrollment-based divisions for badminton, cross country, golf, girls' fall soccer, boys' fall soccer, tennis, and dual-team wrestling.
2) Competitive-equity base divisions for baseball, basketball, football, girls' lacrosse, boys' lacrosse, girls' winter soccer, boys' winter soccer, softball, girls' volleyball, boys' volleyball, and water polo.

For Basketball:
Division 1 – 1900+
Division 2 – 1421-1900
Division 3 – 900-1420
Division 4 – 400-899
Division 5 – 200-399
Division 6 – 199 and less

Top 20 thoughts?

So Mitty is 1 -- maybe the best NorCal team ever? Two USA Basketball gold medalists on the same team? Size everywhere? Great coaching?

OK, enough. Then what?

If Cardinal Newman's Brazilian transfer is eligible, there's No. 2. If not, I think CN drops back into the pack of usual suspects.

SMS: Again, are the transfers eligible? Hear Antelope is fighting back.

Folsom: Awfully good. But good enough to challenge Mitty?

San Ramon Valley: Right there with pretty much everyone back.

Bishop O'Dowd, Salesian, Oakland Tech, Pinewood, Carondelet. Some questions for each, but more than a little talent too.

I think Piedmont drops into the next tier, along with Acalanes (size is the issue). Pleasant Valley won 30 games last year and has everyone back. Vanden is always good.

Who else though? Evergreen Valley? Christian Brothers (30 wins last year)? Lincoln of Stockton? St. Ignatius?

If you were either HC of @TheR or Salesian? What would your thoughts be as you had your morning coffee,…?

I don’t know the Salesian HC? But have only heard ONLY positive thoughts about him from known friends & local college coaches.

I do know Coach Curtin and actually in Awe of his development, dedication to @TheR and this year’s focus despite the naysayers distractions of him & his Team of Destiny team.

But if I am Curtin, “I am relaxed & focused because I know I have developed skills above talant and generated confidence in his team”.

NCS Playoffs - Bracket Development

The NCS Sports Advisory Committee meeting notes are saved in a format that will NOT allow me to copy/paste the proposal that seems to have been adopted at the December meeting.
Here is the link for the notes:

1) Go to page 26 for the bracket development for the NCS playoffs
2) Go to page 27 for the format of how NorCal bids will be distributed for NCS playoff teams

Way Too Early 2024-25 Top NorCal Teams

With the conclusion of the 2023-24 HS Basketball season, just from my observation it was one of the most competitive at all levels. Congrats to all the League, Section, NorCal and State Winners!
In no particular order I'll start with the top teams heading into next season (based on returning varsity players only) Not familiar with all the programs in NorCal so let's start the discussion. Until the NorCal Tip-off!
