Arizona Senior Fall Classic: Matt Manning Stands Out on Day 3

Matt Manning (Sheldon High, Sacramento) showed off impressive stuff on Saturday night, and he has a chance to be an early draft pick in next June’s draft. In one of the better performances of the Arizona Senior Fall Classic, Manning struck out eight batters, walked three, and allowed a double in three innings.

Manning is the son of former NBA player Rich Manning, and while Matt isn’t quite the 6-foot-11 that his father was, he has plenty of size. He’s listed at 6-foot-7, 185 pounds, and he has long legs and a high waist, as well as coathanger shoulders that could pack on good weight as he matures.

On Saturday, Manning’s fastball sat from 91-94 mph and touched 95 a handful of times in his three-inning cameo. The pitch showed late life as it entered the zone, with explosive finish and sink or arm-side run. When Manning located it down in the strike zone, his fastball was all but unhittable, especially at the high school level.

Manning’s second pitch is his curveball, which has a long way to go, but has exciting upside, thanks to Manning’s ability to generate plus spin. He lost his arm slot on his curveball at times on Saturday, but the pitch consistently showed power break. When Manning was on top of and behind the pitch, it broke with 11-to-5 shape and plus depth.

Manning begins his delivery with a stride towards the righthanded batter’s box, and finishes his delivery with his front side slightly closed off. His arm action starts with a deep wrap in the back, and there’s enough force back there to cause his momentum to reverse itself as Manning’s shoulder hits the borderline of hyperextension. He throws from a three-quarters arm slot with outstanding arm speed, and he finishes across his body.

The timing and tempo of Manning’s delivery is still a work in progress. The righthander has only been pitching for a little over a year. Manning is also a prolific basketball player, a shooting guard that could be a Division 1 prospect, though his future is clearly on the mound.

DFAL Scores

Miramonte 34, Acalanes 19, final

Alhambra 35, Dougherty Valley 7, final

Dublin 14, Las Lomas 7, final

Miramonte continues to roll but they will have two tough games remaining CAMPO - the defending champs and Dublin - the best defense in the DFAL (allowing an average of under 8 points per game).

Alhambra is sky high after the Dublin upset. Maybe they do some damage in the playoffs and silence the critics.

Dublin has a pretty good defense this year and need to continue to perfect their running game. I recommend running a lot of motion, throwing in some jet sweeps, boot legs and other misdirection plays. One more win and I think they get a decent seed and a winnable NCS playoff game.

Maria Carrillo 36 Rancho Cotate 35

Carrillo scored on 4th and goal from the 2 with about 12 seconds left. Then they went all in and cashed out on the 2 point conversion. Rancho couldn't stop the run. It was one of those weird situations where they probably shoulda let Carrillo score with a little over a minute left but 4 & goal for it all is good odds also. Carrillo snapped Ranchos home win streak.

Padres

Serra Defeats Sacred Heart Cathedral 48-0

The Serra varsity football team defeated the Sacred Heart Cathedral Fightin' Irish today at Tom Brady Family Stadium by the score of 48-0. The Padres got the scoring started as senior RB Kelepi Lataimua scored on a 4 yard TD run, and junior QB Leki Nunn added a 1 yard TD run to make the score 14-0 early in the first quarter. Nunn then hit senior WR Rory Uniacke on a 32 yard TD pass, and a 2 point conversion by Nunn made the score 22-0. The scoring continued as Nunn hit senior WR Hunter Bishop on an 9 yard TD pass, and Nunn hit Uniacke again for an 18 yard TD pass to make the score 34-0 to end the first half. The Padres added two more TD's in the second half as junior RB Hiliate Meredith scored on 7 yard TD run, and senior RB Ryan Peralta hit paydirt with a 37 yard TD run to end the game with final score of 48-0.

Top 5 Sacramento area teams since 1981

Hoops is almost here, so let's start it off with a top 5 Sac area teams since 1981. Criteria that I'm using is wins versus nationally ranked teams and how deep u went in the state playoffs as well as competition u played in state playoffs. This is objective and open to all opinions. Let's try and celebrate all the great teams that have come through the capital city and lifted us up. Let's try not to tear down if that's at all possible on this board.

My top 5:

1) Jesuit - 92-94. They beat multiple nationally ranked teams. Had one season where their only losses were to number 1 ranked team in the Nation St. Anthony's and Crenshaw in State Championship.
2) Oak Ridge - 2004/2005. Had an amazing playoff run winning 7 of 8 playoff games by double figures. They knocked off SRV's best team ever in Norcal semis and then beat Jeremy Lin's #1 ranked Palo Alto team by 20 in Norcal championship and sealing the deal with arguably the biggest upset in state championship history beating #5 team in nation and national powerhouse Mater Dei by 16 pts.
3) Sheldon - 2012/2013. Probably the most talented individually of all these teams. Set a standard for the modern era of Sacramento basketball. State Runner up in 2012 to Mater Dei and then a Norcal open championship runner losing to Aaron Gordon and Mitty.
4) Capital - 2013/2014. Followed Sheldons blueprint in playing a national schedule and beating top 10 teams Nationally. If it wasn't for Bishop O'Dowd, they would have been in the Open division State championship game. Only Losses were in Championship game of National division of MaxPreps invitational without their starting big. 2 losses to Bod and a loss to Centenial in Championship of Sac high tournament. Eventually losing to Bishop O'Dowd in NorCal Open championship.
5) Foothill - 2002/2003. Beat a very good Harvard Westlake team in the Division 3 state championship.

Can't wait to see some other lists. Remember, this is a top 5 team list. This isn't about individual players.
