FRIDAY NIGHT PICKS AND SOME GREAT VICTORIES

Friday night had only four picks that went bad but one was a real bummer as Antioch did every thing but skin Rancho Cotate alive with a 54-14 trouncing.....The Panther line kept the Cougars off balance all night, plus a solid pass defense and the hard running of Harris.....
This is what Antioch has taken care of so far.
Antioch 62 Acalanes 7
Antioch 47 Milpitas 22
Antioch 26 San Leandro 3
Antioch 54 Rancho Cotate 14
Talk about making a statement and next on the schedule is Pinole Valley who has been running up the scores, but have a over whelming task facing them against the Panthers.
I thought for sure that Bishop O'Dowd could handle St. Mary's of Albany as they have done in the past, but the young Dragons went down 25-14.
And Mt. Diablo...what is going on???? they racked up loss #4 against DeAnza in a wild scoring loss of 47-36.
But not a real surprise was Campolindo being downed by Napa 21-14....The Indians put up solid pressure that had the Cougar QB scrambling with no time to make good passes, and the running game was stopped cold and for the first time in a while, there was no recovery in the 2nd half which has been Campolindo's ace in the hole. And in a last minute drive to tie the game, the Cougars fired off four passes in a row that all failed as the clock was running out.
I under estimated Antioch big time and over estimated RC and the same with Napa as the Indians played tough.
But what about California who had a bad time with Pittsburg, but one has to remember, that Cal has a very good JV team that moved up to replace the 2014 team and ran into teething problems, but came out shooting against Liberty and in the 2nd half took control of the game in a great victory at 52-24.
But there is Dougherty Valley who is now 4-0 with a crushing victory over Mountain House 58-13...Now the question is how will they do in league play as they go up against Las Lomas, the 2015 preseason has been a big turn around for the Wild Cats.
Another team to rise in the preseason is Livermore with a 59-0 win over Arroyo and are now at 3-1, but now they face Monte Vista in the first league game next Friday night who traveled to Sacred Heart Cathedral and dumped them 41-6 ..
And DLS took care of business with a 41-3 win over visiting Lutheran of so. calif. and Amador valley got back on the winning trail with a 28-7 win over a up andcoming ElCerrito.
Is there any stopping clayton valley charter after their 42-13 win over Logan....When you take a look at their only loss to Folsom at 27-26 and you see what Folsomhas done since the CVC game
Folsom 42 clovis North 25
Folsom 54 Pleasant Grove 14
Folsom 56 Burbank 20
It looks like a clean sweep for the eagle for the 2015 season.....

Rancho Cotate vs Antioch

Wondering what people think about this matchup? Antioch looks like a force to be reckoned with led by 5 star all world Najee "we don't need to throw we got Najee" Harris. Thing is Antioch has a pretty decent team besides Harris. They have a couple other guys that can take the ball to the house if they get it in space. Harris may be the best athlete Rancho has ever faced. Do they stand a chance? Rancho vs Alhambra is on The Cube buts it feezes. Antioch vs San Leandro is on The Cube also. I don't know, this is going to be a tough one for Rancho Cotate. I mean Antioch has a weapon that looks like Eric Dickerson. What is Rancho to do?

Why coaches need to keep playing

I'm an old guy, and I was never very good, but I still try to keep playing -- and I think it's important for all coaches to play in pickup games and leagues. The main reason? It's a hard game, and when you don't play any more, you tend to forget how easy it is to make a mistake, and you can become too negative.

A general example: You're playing and doing OK and then, for no apparent reason, you take a dumb shot or make a bad pass. If a coach was on the sideline, he would immediately call you out -- but some coaches, especially those who haven't been on the court recently and forget how easily those lapses occur, can go off. And they shouldn't. Players make mistakes, even experienced players, and we're coaching high school girls, who don't have experience and are often pretty goofy to begin with.

A specific example (which brought this to mind): So I was playing four-on-four on a short full court on Sunday, and two of the players on my team were good, and we were in a close game. I was on the weakside block when an opponent who I wasn't guarding drove to the hoop. I went across the lane to contest the shot and left the ground ("jumped" would be too generous). The guy missed the shot but my momentum had carried me past the shooter, so he got the rebound and scored. One of the two good players yelled at me for not screening out.

Now, that kind of thing doesn't bother me, so I said nothing, but I thought "Hey, I came to help rather than give up an uncontested layup, maybe contributed to the miss, but there was no way I was athletic enough to land and quickly screen out a better player than me." It's possible that when I'm coaching I would yell at a player for exactly that kind of play, but I shouldn't -- and the only way to know that is if I'm still playing and make that same mistake.

There are pickup games everywhere, and lots of levels of play, and even though, like me, a lot of coaches aren't what they used to be and don't necessarily want to demonstrate that (to themselves or others), I think it's important that coaches get out there and make mistakes, and remember just how hard it is to be a good basketball player.

Pacific Grove (Mission Trail) crushes Freemont (DeAnza)

With both teams coming off fairly large victories, in the sense of point-spreads, against schools rated in sub-zero categories, CCS/Mission Trail/Pacific Grove from Monterey County rated (12.1) beat (1.2) rated visiting CCS/DeAnza/Freemont of Santa Clara County in a game that opened like someone had poured a bottle of jalapeño sauce into the Gater-aide, with both teams scoring as the result of big, long opening plays only 45 seconds into the 1st quarter.

The Firebirds scored first, after running the opening kick-off to their own 49 yd line and then shocking the Breakers with a short quick pass and run for a 51 yd TD, only to be answered by PG who ran the ensuing kick-off 76 yds to the 24, with #6 Ebo scoring on a run two plays later (the PAT attempt went wide). Next two times PG got the ball, they scored on long running plays, only to be over-taken buy the F-Birds who scored on a long pass and a long run, leading at the end of the 1st quarter 21-20.

From then on, the 2nd quarter had the Firebirds fizzling with the Breakers breaking bad all over Freemont by racking up an unaswered 36 points, going into halftime with the score 57-21, thanks to 1 passing and 4 running TDs. By the time the game ended (with some sort of mercy clock running when the refs weren't looking), PG's Ebo had run for 3 TDs with Cryns (rhymes with Ryan's) scoring two TDs and kicking a FG, and with Foster scoring a pair of sixes. At this point, after a bye last week, PG is looking Mission Trail league strong and likely will run the table until the season's closer against arch rival Carmel, now 1-1 (with a bye this weekend.) To beat the Padres, and go very far in the post season, the Breakers will have to shore-up two vulnerabilities that were apparent, tonight: defending against the quick short pass and runs around end.

Sideline notes for the night: When PG's fast #21 Foster who, after carrying the ball an extra 10 yds with the entire Freemont team mauling or piling on to him during what looked like a rugby scrum, got his helmet torn from his head, he got up laughing and for a moment I thought Tom Cruise had reprised his role from his break-out movie, what was it called, Risky Business? Foster a spitting image of the Mission Impossible star... Funnist part of the eve, during the 1st half, hanging around the pedestrian path infront of the stands a bunch of little 8-10 year old future boy and girl Breakers and Breakerettes, the gals, about 8 of them cheering and shaking orange pom-poms while two boys hung a 3'x3' white sign over the fence, all of them trying to get the attention of one of the PG players. What was funny, to me anyway, was when the lads tired of no player response, they climbed down from the fence and I got a glimpse of the front of their sign. It was blank. Totally nothing on it. Zip. And there you have it. The future hope of mankind, holding up a sign that's blank on both sides while cheering...for nothing?!... Second game now I've sat high-up on the PG side smelling something really good being BBQ'd near the concession stand behind the North/East end-zone. Next time, I'm going to yield to temptation and find out if the taste lives up to the smell. Muds

WCAL Injuries

SHC, RIordan and Valley Christian all have injuries to pivotal players on their teams. In SHC's case, they have multiple injuries throughout their starting lineup - Stefko, Na and Murphy.
VC's, Colin Johnson is likely out for the season based on the reports from the SJ Mercury. Riordan's Raymone Sanders leg injury appeared serious as he was carted off the field, but no word yet on the extent of the injury.
With WCAL play starting in two weeks it's quite apparent that to ensure a competitive and/or winning season heavily depends on a team's roster depth, not in numbers, but in quality backups.
All the WCAL teams have next week off with time to recover and work on their game, with the exception of the Crusaders. Next up for them are the St. Mary's Panthers in Berkeley who are coming off a good win over host Bishop O'Dowd. St. Mary's has some talented skill players and are well coached. Should be a good barometer to find out Coach Fordon's adjustments to replace Sanders and the team's ability to clean up their game in preparation for league play. We shall soon see.

De La Salle opens with a Texas-size challenge

By Mitch Stephens

De La Salle’s storied football program has seen just about everything since Bob Ladouceur took over the program in 1979. Everything but Texas. That changes Saturday.

The Spartans will be in sold-out Vernon Newsom Stadium (capacity: 11,134) near Dallas to play Trinity-Euless before an ESPN2 audience. Kickoff is at 6 p.m. PDT.

The Spartans — arguably the nation’s most recognized prep team — are looking forward to making their debut in a state where high school football “is religion,” De La Salle senior quarterback Anthony Sweeney said. “I'm so excited to go down there and try to prove ourselves.”

Though De La Salle has claimed multiple mythical national titles and four state titles in five years, once won a national-record 151 straight games and last year was portrayed in a major motion picture — “When the Game Stands Tall” — it hasn’t fared so well in early out-of-state games.

In 2004, it had its win streak stopped against Bellevue (Washington) 39-20 in Seattle. In 2009, the Spartans lost at Don Bosco Prep (Ramsey, N.J.) 30-6, the same score by which they were defeated two years later at St. Thomas Aquinas in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

The Spartans enter Saturday’s game ranked No. 1 nationally by MaxPreps.com and USA Today, in large part because of a bevy of returning skill players, led by running backs Antoine Custer and Andrew Hernandez — who combined for 3,753 yards and 54 touchdowns last year — and two of the state’s most highly rated linemen, 6-foot-2, 300-pound defensive tackle Boss Tagaloa and 6-5, 270-pound tight end Devin Asiasi.

Tagaloa and Asiasi are two of De La Salle’s three players who check in at 270 or more. Trinity boasts nine at least that big, including 6-4, 290-pound defensive lineman Chris Daniels, a four-star recruit.

Trinity, which won large-school Texas titles in 2005, 2007 and 2009, reflects the notion that everything is bigger in its state. The Trojans use that size to overpower opponents with an old-school, ball-control running attack.

“Their linemen are just humongous,” said Randy Jennings, a writer for the Dallas Morning News who has covered Texas high school football for 40 seasons. “They just maul people. They’re like road graders. The play like teams did here 20 years ago and opposite of how about everyone plays today.”

Converted senior fullback Tyler Natee (6-0, 217), who rushed for more than 1,400 yards a year ago, is the team’s quarterback. Speedy running back Ja’Ron Wilson (5-10, 185) returns after gaining 1,791 for last year’s 12-2 team.

Trinity’s line, though massive, is all new, which is why it’s ranked only ninth in Texas by MaxPreps.

“They’re just really big and really physical,” De La Salle head coach Justin Alumbaugh said. “We’ll need to keep the ball from them and match or better their physicality.”

Though the novelty of De La Salle playing in the land “Friday Night Lights” is great, the game figures to be fast and simple. Both coaches — Trinity is led by first-year head coach Chris Jensen — exchanged video of all of last year’s games and their respective scrimmages from last week.

“There won’t be any secrets,” said Jensen, Trinity’s offensive coordinator for the previous 14 seasons. “Whichever team does best what they do best will win the game.”

Jensen, an assistant coach for 25 years, replaced Steve Lineweaver, who retired in December after going 258-43-2 in 22 seasons. Jensen’s first assignment is the nation’s No. 1 team.

“It was like, ‘Thanks a lot,’” Jensen said. “Actually, they gave me the option to cancel the game. But you know what? We could have opened against someone around here and been fine because there is plenty of good competition here. But this is an experience the kids and coaches won’t ever forget. It’s a special opportunity.

“That said, it was much easier saying, ‘Yes’ in February to the game than it is now after seeing them on video. Now it’s like, ‘What was I thinking?’”

Riordan CCS Math

Two non conference wins and thoughts of playoffs in their heads. Far fetched? No. With Serra excluded from the playoffs, means there is 1 less to fight with for a spot. If Riordan can beat BOTH City schools and somehow finds a way against another WCAL team, they could have 6 wins (Do you believe in miracles) and a slot in the CCS.

A young coaching staff willing to open the offense, a solid senior class and some luck could make this happen. If they are going to make a run, this is the year. They will have to have a good showing next week to finish non league 3 - 0, to prepare for 10/3 WCAL opening. Anything can happen.....

Pleasant game 4-1 Valley, unpleasent 4 other Valley

By a score of 35-21, Pleasant Valley's Vikings from Chico beat River Valley's Falcons from the River, or the Valley, or Yuba City, or all three according to a source who has never lied to me.

Interesting, that a way inland team, from Chico (Pleasant Valley, no less), what, a 3-4 hour drive from the ocean, calls itself the Vikings, a hoard of sea-faring part human part Neanderthals who were anything but "pleasant." I dunno, there oughta be a law. Your school names is Pleasant Valley, you from Chico, you nickname name should be the Chickens or Chicsters or Cheeky Cheerios, but not the Vikings. On that note, i think the last "falcon" ever spotted in Yuba City was in 1954 in the sights of a 4-10 shotgun. The Live Oak "Acorns" of Morgan Hill are probably the only high school nick name connected to something connected to it. Although, Live Oak Acorns of Live Oak, CA would be the ultimate team name.
