LA Times Article About the State of Transfers in the Southern Section

TRANSFERS BRING THE TITLES IN HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL TODAY

The Southern Section and City Section football championships have been decided, and once again, everyone needs to be reminded about the influence of transfers in deciding the outcome of games.

In high school sports, in order to figure out which team is going to win a championship at the highest level, follow the transfers.

In the Pac-5 Division final, Corona Centennial's 48-41 win over St. John Bosco was aided by quarterback Nate Ketteringham, a transfer from San Diego Westview, and running back Sammonte Bonner, a transfer from Corona Santiago who rushed for 242 yards and scored four touchdowns while filling in for the injured J.J. Taylor, a transfer from San Juan Capistrano JSerra.

In the City Section Division I final, Narbonne's 33-20 win over Carson was helped by running back Sean Riley, a transfer from Dorsey who returned a kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown. In Division III, Los Angeles won its first title since 1965 led by quarterback Kaymen Cureton, a transfer from Lakewood.

The Hamilton Yankees are example No. 1 about the impact of transfers. They won the City Division II championship, 58-20, over Sylmar. There were nine transfers on their roster, seven of which received immediate eligibility with a valid change of residence, according to City Section records.

"Something good must be going on over there," Sylmar Coach John Brazil said.

Russell Shaw, a transfer from Compton Centennial, had four touchdowns. Jericho Flowers, a transfer from Culver City, had three touchdowns. Armani Rogers, a transfer from Culver City, passed for three touchdowns.

John Aguirre, the City Section commissioner, said the transfers were all cleared to play under CIF eligibility rules, though the section continues to investigate when information is provided.

This school year alone, transfer paperwork has been filed for more than 4,000 students at Southern Section schools.

"You gotta to try to get athletes in there some way," Sylmar's Brazil said. "I'm a firm believer don't hold a kid back."

Eric Scott, the coach at Los Angeles, said about the movement of athletes, "A kid's ultimate dream is to get a scholarship. Sports is a way out. Kids are looking for opportunities. This is definitely a new culture. Everybody wants to win. These high schools want to win."
And, if you think football is being influenced by transfers, wait until you check the rosters for the basketball championships come March.

On Jan. 5, players who had to sit out the first month of the basketball season because they didn't move will become eligible. Team rankings will need to be adjusted, because the influx of talent will be dramatic.

What's interesting about this year's football playoffs is that 12 of the 13 champions in the Southern Section were public schools. Several were helped by the realignment of playoff divisions, though it also should be noted that public schools, like private schools, know how to play the transfer game.

This new transfer culture appears to be here to stay. There's only a handful of schools choosing not to participate. If you want to predict the City or Pac-5 champion for 2015, check the rosters for transfers next season.

Is this the best group Northern California has ever sent to Carson?

OPEN:

De La Salle (Concord)
vs.
Centennial (Corona)

DIVISION I:

Folsom
vs.
Oceanside

DIVISION II:

Clayton Valley Charter (Concord)
vs.
Redlands East Valley (Redlands)

Division III:

Campolindo (Moraga)
vs.
El Capitan (Lakeside)

SMALL SCHOOL:

Central Catholic (Modesto)
vs.
St. Margaret's (San Juan Capistrano)

------------------------------

I can't say I know a ton about The Schools playing in Division 4 or about El Capitan.

But I do think this is the best group NorCal has ever sent to Carson. I don't see the north losing in The Open, D1 or D2.

NCS dominating NorCal

Three of the five teams going south are with 15 miles of each other. Crappy, Cal14, just saying!! . The reality of the deal is that I think they did a good job making sure their programs played in the right classifications to give them an opportunity to succeed- simple as that. The CCS should take note as they did a horrible job. I still think the Sac area is the new power in Northern California in football and baseball. Purely demographics with younger families.

Adderral is the New Threat to Baseball Players

Coaches - mentors and showcase people (I know this is a broad statement) are still whispering to kids: "You really need to get bigger - faster and stronger"

Folsom Vs Oceanside (SDG)

Any thoughts on this one? Both teams come in undefeated and feature explosives offenses. Folsom really impressed me with their ability to mix it up and rack off some big running plays last night against Grant. This is one of the areas that makes this team better than in the past. Plus there O-Line is as good as there is in HS.

I just don't see Oceanside staying within 2 scores. Most likely it will be something like 49-28. Browning didn't play that well last night but give Grant a little credit because there DB's and Secondary has legit speed. They were overly physical at times but I doubt browning has seen that sort of quickness this year.

PREDICTIONS FOR D1, D2,D3,D4 PLYOFF'S

D-1
Folsom Bulldogs 14-0 vs. Grant Pacers 14-0 at Sacramento State at 7:30 Friday night
Folsom 49 Grant 27......the bulldogs have been weighing waste to every team they have faced this year while the Pacers have been winning their games...Folsom is balanced, so the Pacers are going to have to pull some thing out of the hat to stop the Bulldogs.

D-2
Clayton Valley Charter Eagles 14-0 vs. Oakdale Mustangs 13-1 at Clayton Valley High at 7:30 Saturday night
CVC 38 Oakdale 26.....CVC had one close game with Concord and won 48-40, when they clashed again, the Eagles came prepared and knocked off Concord 33-6.....Oakdale lost only one game to Sierra of Manteca 31-20 in the early going, since that time the Mustangs have improved game by game, but now they face Miles Harrison and a tough eagle D and O.

D-3
Campolindo Cougars 14-0 vs Sutter Huskies 13-0 at Acalanes Hi on Saturday night at 7:30... Campolindo 32 Sutter 28.....Campolindo fields a team that will grind out the yardage on the ground and led by Nick Fadelli, and Adam Remotto...They have a sure handed receiver in Tyler Petite , plus a defense that will stretch but not break. Sutter has one big win over Justin-Siena 49-0, they are big and play as a team...this game could be real close as it could be decided in the trenches...

D-4
Central Catholic Mauraders 10-3 vs. Capital Christian 13-0 at Central catholic Hi on Friday night at 7:30
Central Catholic 33 Capital christen 24...although the Mauraders lost three games...St. Mary's of Stockton 18-13,Sierra of Manteca 17-14 and a pasting by Oakdale 48-28, they still have the edge....Capital Christen had only two close games against the same team....Modesto Christen the first time 23-22 and the second time in the playoff's 35-28....Again, this will also be a close game....

Clayton Valley Charter vs. Oakdale

Let's get a topic going on this match up. Predictions? Why? Etc.... This game is what high school football is all about.

Here's my 2 cents on this epic match up.

The Uglies are playing fantastic football at the right time. It's been an epic year offensively, led by arguably the top 5 RB in No Cal, Miles Harrison. He has torched every team all season, and destroyed Concord High last weekend in NCS Title game. He follows a machine-like offensive line. Underrated is their newly found passing game. QB has 19 TD's & 1 INT. Defense is playing shut down and have allowed less than 40 points in the playoff's, including stuff the high powered Concord High. Playing Oakdale is close to playing their mirror image. Well balanced, hard hitting and explosive running game. Oakdale has history and a great fan base. They will come to play. In reviewing their schedules, I'd argue that CV has played a more difficult one, and for the most part, has blown everyone out. They were battle tested in game vs. Con and vs. Tracy.

I believe this game will come down to explosive/big plays, turnovers and which team can impose their will/style to an advantage. In the end, I think that CV will have too much fire power, and more "athletic" overall at the skill positions. I think that this is a magic year for the Ugly Eagles, and with respect to Oakdale......prediction:

CV - 41, Oakdale 21
