The last time I posted, it was a book report I had done for the “Old Norcalpreps website” called “When Cuba Conquered Kentucky”
This book is called “ Big Game, Small World” - Written by Alexander Wolff.
Wolff the author of other books on hoops has put together a collection of Vignettes from his travels around the world as a basketball vagabond.
His writing is full of history, lore and story, all centered on how basketball has influenced cultures and their people.
He writes with a healthy sense of humor which will keep you on track with what he has to say.
There is the story of Sister Rose - once known as Shelly Pennefather , who was the highest paid women player in the world. She had a shot that was the envy of anyone who wanted that ability. She gives it all up to join a convent and take a vow of poverty and silence.
We visit the king of that tiny country, Bhutan, nestled between China and India. The description of a Monk in his Robes, being able to dribble between his legs is priceless.
The stories go on and on.
If you are a lover of good writing , history and adventure, or just your average everyday hoopaholic , you will enjoy this book, it gets better and better with every story you will read. Enjoy!
Here’s Wishing You Great Hoops
