Would appreciate thoughts on which club programs are best at taking athletic girls, say 10-12 years old, and helping them develop into kids who can play at the high school level.

aau teams are not the best route. you need to spend hours rebounding for your daughter, making her use her off hand, doing speed drills, shooting 1000 free throws a week, watching film and so forth. now playing at the high school level isnt that hard depending on where you live but most schools arent running 12 girls out there that are excellent. also the money you spend on aau teams, travel, gas, hotels, food could be spent on a trainer. dont let the coaches fool you. assess your child yourself and be honest. too many parents are confused.

for once we agree on something! AAU isn't the place for development but rather for showcasing. If I were to send my kid to one place for development (solely), I would hands down pick Fever. Doc Shepplar and his assistants really focus on development, but the downside is that they don't play in the top divisions for showcase. For younger kids, this is hands down the best club for developing the complete player.

One of the best ways for high school-level players to develop is to play with older guys, and one of the best ways for elementary school girls to develop is to play with boys. The aggressiveness, strength and competitiveness of boys and men makes it a perfect place to develop, for all mistakes are punished -- and that's the best way to learn.

You don't get better by playing against people worse than you, and playing against guys/boys will quickly bring girls up against people who are better and play the game at a higher level.

Usually, the best development time is activities in an empty gym (drill work, pick up games for example). And if parents are putting up money, they usually want more bright lights.

You're so right: One of the best ways to learn to play is pick-up, especially if the winners hold the court and the losers sit. There's nothing like doing what it takes to win to teach the game.

Bay Area Wildcats based out of Oakland High School. They focus on skill development and play once or twice a month. Every kid plays every position and actually learns the game. The program is not about wins and losses but about development and preparing for High School. bayareawildcats.org

XBA/ Golden City. Kenyatta does a really good job.
Kenyatta is the best developer of talent I have seen. Look at all the kids "XBA" touched and what they have done since leaving his program. They are all very skilled with high IQ. I recommend you at least talk to this guy because, he trains them, coaches them, and develops them...
