Cal Coach Gottlieb to NBA

Definitely came out of nowhere, but it is a historic move for Lindsay Gottlieb.

Question turns to where does Cal go? Big crossroads for the program

clay usually has a pretty good take about hard it would have been to upgrade from LG if they chose to fire her... so it'll be interesting.. go for someone like Paul Thomas??

Paul Thomas would not be a good hire. He's had some success since taking over but hasn't won league, NCAA tourney (if any). This late in the game could be hard, but it is a Pac-12 school in a power conference. Kai Felton has been an assistant at USC for years and here at Cal for a few as well. Maybe take a crack at her in this transitional year?

It's a difficult situation for Cal, I think, given two things:

1) It's very late in the year to hire a new Power 5 head coach, both from a candidate perspective and a recruiting perspective.

2) The cupboard is pretty bare at Cal right now, and it's not really a great situation. The Pac-12 is the best it's ever been, and competition for players is fierce -- and when you throw in Cal's academic requirements, it's an even tougher place to succeed. Gonzaga's Lisa Fortier-Tarpley (I think that's the right last name) has all the credentials, but like many successful mid-major coaches, would she leave an established program to struggle for several years at Cal and maybe wind up getting fired?

There's also a cost issue involved, as to get a quality coach at this point may be more expensive than makes sense, given the poor attendance and likelihood of two or three years of losing seasons.

Congrats to Lindsay, though ... hope it works out for her.

Molly Goodenbour (USF) would be a good hire, even at this late date.

Agree (didn't think of her)! good coach with a good pedigree although she's struggled at USF and did less than stellar at Irvine. She did however take Dominguez to the NCAA tourney 1-2 times. I also agree with Observer...I think Paye will be TV's replacement. I know it's not unheard of (Coale, Trakh, McIllop-steph curry coach) but moving from the high school to the college level has had some success for some coaches who have made the journey.

She's done the late thing before.

From everything I've heard, Molly is not a long-term answer. She tends to have a good year or two and then things start moving in the wrong direction. I'm guessing they're looking for a Power 5 coach, but it's going to be hard to get anyone with ambition to come in and try to build from the ground up in what well could be the toughest league in the country.
