Dunniway can't find anyone and runs the ball up the middle before being stopped and ending the half. Halftime score: CN 14 SM 14.

I walk away and missed it ... oops! CN scores to take the lead CN 21 SM 14. Understand a huge TD pass by Brookshire.

Frampton stopped up the middle. 2nd and goal on the 2. Frampton dives over for the TD. PAT is good. Rams take the lead with 7:09 left in the game. CN 28 SM 35.

Brookshire ball on CN 27. Keeper short for 2. Pass incomplete x 2 brings up 4th down for CN. CN appears to be going for it with 6:21 left in the game. Timeout Newman.

If SM is having such a hard time with Brookshire, it is going to be a nightmare next week when Central Catholic visits the Rams. CC's Petlansky is another QB that loves to run the ball.

CN passes deep .... INCOMPLETE! SM takes over and Zaunbrecher runs for 3 yards. Anticipate more run plays to chew up the clock. Double fake to Cotton and Zaunbrecher and pitch to Frampton nets only 1 yard. Dunniway's pass nearly picked off. 4th and 6 with 5 minutes to go with the ball on the 25. SM calls timeout.

SM going for it! QB Dunniway is sacked! Penalty flag! Holding SM. CN takes over.

But, flag is thrown and PI is called on the Rams. 1st down on CN 47. Brookshire on the keeper for 4 yards to get CN into Ram territory. CN's offense limited to run with Brookshire or pass to Wallace, yet it is working. Pass to Wallace good for 5 yards. The refs call for a measurement. Inches!

Pass deep intended for Cody Baker falls incomplete brings up 4th down. False start forces 4th and 5 plus inches, when it could have been 4th an inches. CN calls timeout with 2:24 left in the game. CN's final timeout.

Brookshire pass over the middle to Wallace for a CN 1st down. Ball on 16. Pass complete for 4 yards to RB. Brookshire breaking tackles ... TD CN! CN going for 2.

Brookshire's run is short! Stopped by Norgaard. 2 pt conversion is NO GOOD! Score is CN 34 SM 35. Onside kick is short. SM takes over and takes the victory formation. Game over!

Final score: CN 34 SM 35

St. Mary's picks up the victory! Congrats RAMS!

Good game Cardinal Newman! Hats off to the Cardinals for going for it!

I honestly was going to post a while back that if it came down to it Cronin was going for it. Thought it was too random to post. Good game though.

Love that Cardinal Newman went for two. Interesting comparison between Brookshire and Petlansky, who faces St. Mary's next week.

just getting in from Bj's..lol

was at the game....

what a GREAT frign game.....period

loved CN going for 2 at the end to win it....apparently out of sections games don't do OT. So it would have ended a tie if CN had kicked the xtra point. So props to Cronin and CN.

I was on the field at the goal line and thought Brookshire was in by a half a yard easily for the 2 pt conversion..im still shocked the refs didn't give it to him.
He ended up on the ground with the goaline going across his forearm.
The refs said his knee touched the ground BEFORE his upperbody crossed the goaline..... :-(
I'm not sure about that...I was on the field at the goaline and I disagree but Im biased.
anyways...nice win by SMS...good showing by CN.

neither team could stop the other.....turnovers were the only stop by either team for the most part.

awesome game

Sounds like newman is much improved from last year and St Mary's goes on the road to win a tough first game after losing a lot of kids to a great team last year. I love how Cronin went for it. Any thoughts on Brookshire development? Can this kid play at the next level? How does his arm look. Thanks for the updates guys. Great play by play.

***** One other interesting thing I noticed.

For all of those people who think it would be BS and a shame if CN goes D4 instead of staying D3.
(see the Marin Catholic thread from last week)

AT HOME.....CN suited up 30 players....that's a HUGE disadvantage playing D3...the fact that they can compete in D3 is impressive. D4 really is probably where they should be.

just my opinion.

During warm ups I counted about 60 players suited up for St. Mary's. It's impressive CN can put up the game they did against St. Mary's, as a true D4 enrollment team, and 30 varsity players. The thing about going D4 (with MC), is that most every year it will be MC/CN walk to the Championship game. I liked the D3 playoff games with East Bay teams, like El Cerrito/Campolindo, because it made the NCS D3 Section one of the most competitive in Norcal, year in and year out. A true gauntlet, similar to Pac 5 on a lower level. But I guess with the new CIF format for section champions, why not go D4, especially since it seems for the last few years Coach Cronin has had less to work with. Either way...

I'm curious what's CN exact enrollment...and how it breaks down with boys and girls.

Are they on the high side of D4 with enrollment? middle? lower?

Cause honestly I would have expected more suiting up than what they had. Although there were 4 kids in street clothes and jersey tops also. Not sure what their story was.

Next time I see the principal I will ask him about enrollment.

It really puts in perspective when you think of a team like CVC who is suiting up 80+ guys. Crazy!

For CN to be in a position to win that game is crazy. St Mary's is a powerhouse year in and out. Baseball and Hoops are different with enrollment than football. I'm pretty sure Newman has about 150-170 students in each class (boys and girls). So much for home calls!
