So far, at least two significant prep entities (the SCVAL and BVAL schools from San Jose Unified) are opting out of CCS basketball playoffs. There is plenty of unhappiness about those decisions but that's where things stand this weekend. Further, there is no indication that the six San Mateo Union schools are going to take part in those playoffs as well. Those schools are being allowed to play only among themselves, no outside competition. On the girls' side of the equation, Capuchino is probably the most significantly damaged if CCS playoffs aren't allowed by the SM authorities. The current Mustang squad is the best female unit in the school's history. It has two outstanding college-level players (Afeaki and Gamble) and several strong supporting kids (especially the head coach's daughter, Hoff). Capuchino would do serious CCS damage outside an Open Division (Mitty and Pinewood are probably a step too far for the Mustangs, certainly no disgrace). So the pandemic may continue to kill the dreams of a once-in-a-lifetime San Bruno crew whose school (which opened in the early 1950s) has never been on anyone's girls' basketball radar screen. Most unfortunate.

The Sequoia Union High School District (four PAL schools) has announced that none of its teams will be allowed to participate in CCS playoffs in any sport.
