A really interesting idea ... so there are two four-team pools, and the winner of each pool plays for the championship.
One reason I like it is that it minimizes the impact of matchups. A team can lose a game when it has bad matchups but still win its other two and have a chance to move on. (And with four team pools, any tie is broken by head-to-head, so there's no point differential or other tiebreaker involved.)
One reason the Southern Section likes it is that there are now 13 Open games instead of seven, and every one will make some money. Let's just say each of the extra games generates $500 -- that's $3,500 extra, not to mention the concessions for the home team. And a couple big crowds can add $5,000 to the bottom line, which never hurts.
Given that Southern Section was the first to go to competitive equity, and now the rest of the state has followed along, look for sections to seriously consider pool play -- and if NCS ever passes its Open division, why not go straight to pool play and make it more fun for players and fans, and more profitable for the section?
