CIF SS Open Bracket....Pools

A really interesting idea ... so there are two four-team pools, and the winner of each pool plays for the championship.

One reason I like it is that it minimizes the impact of matchups. A team can lose a game when it has bad matchups but still win its other two and have a chance to move on. (And with four team pools, any tie is broken by head-to-head, so there's no point differential or other tiebreaker involved.)

One reason the Southern Section likes it is that there are now 13 Open games instead of seven, and every one will make some money. Let's just say each of the extra games generates $500 -- that's $3,500 extra, not to mention the concessions for the home team. And a couple big crowds can add $5,000 to the bottom line, which never hurts.

Given that Southern Section was the first to go to competitive equity, and now the rest of the state has followed along, look for sections to seriously consider pool play -- and if NCS ever passes its Open division, why not go straight to pool play and make it more fun for players and fans, and more profitable for the section?

It would be great if they could hold those games at a neutral site, so people can watch multiple games at one location. It appears the higher seed plays at home every game if I am reading that right, so #8 Troy has to play on the road in all 3 of their Open games. A tough task to be sure, but in the old system, they would have to win on the road each round as well.

while swimming laps (lots of time for idle thoughts), I recently wondered about a Norcal Open run as a standard 8-team bracketed tournament, everybody playing 3 games, finishers 1-8 clearly identified. not so good for 0-3 finisher (but undisputed 8th best team in Norcal!) but special recognition for the Chosen . suppose it's easier to produce 8 special banners. pool play is intriguing, Olympic even, and if SS is trying, we'll see how it works.

Here is my pool for SJS Section Open this year. Wow, would love to see these match-ups! How much more money would SJS make with these games instead of all those first and second round waste of time blowouts.

Pool A
1. Bear Creek
4. St. Marys
5. McClatchy
8. Christian Brothers
Pool B
2. Sac High
3. Folsom
6. Antelope
7. Cosumnes Oaks

Probably the direction everyone is heading. Appears to be a good idea.

Sierra Canyon gets by Redondo Union by 1 point. Saturday they play Bishop Montgomery to try and advance on one side of the bracket.
The other side of bracket is interesting because WW beat MD, but MD beat Etiwanda. So Saturday night sets up big game WW vs Etiwanda. If WW wins, they will go 3-0 and advance. But if Etiwanda beats WW, all of them could be 2-1. Then MD will advance based on the tiebreaker though.

CIF-SS Tie Breakers:

2 way tie - head to head
3 way tie - lowest seed number of wins in pool play

3 Way Tie: The team with the lowest combined seed points
from games they won in pool play, will advance out of pool.

3 Way Tie Breaker Example:
Record
Seed Points
Seed 1- beats 8, beats 5, loses to 4
2-1
13
Seed 4- loses to 5, beats 8, beats 1
2-1
9
Seed 5- beats 4, loses to 1, beats 8
2-1
12
Seed 8- loses to 1, loses 4, loses 5

* Seed 4 advances by accumulating the lowest number of opponent
seed points (9) in their pool play wins.
