The light bulb went on in the local gym tonight as the guy to my right began musing about the CIF's new fixation with competitive equity, sort of AYSO with a 30-second clock, charging fouls and a hoop. He referred to the current playoff model as "West Coast Jamboree Revisted." Good call. The WCJ may be a bit smaller (not by much), but the combined NorCal and SoCal tourneys have used the same sort of rationale for seeding teams, all the way from the very best to the disturbingly dismal. Come to think about it, maybe it's time for the state to double the number of equity divisions and make them eight-team brackets like the WCJ. Forget divisions; go with gold, diamond, platinum, zircon, quartz, whatever. Then twice as many schools can be state champions. It would be WCJ all the way. Right on. Pepsi and pizza for everyone.
