The light bulb went on in the local gym tonight as the guy to my right began musing about the CIF's new fixation with competitive equity, sort of AYSO with a 30-second clock, charging fouls and a hoop. He referred to the current playoff model as "West Coast Jamboree Revisted." Good call. The WCJ may be a bit smaller (not by much), but the combined NorCal and SoCal tourneys have used the same sort of rationale for seeding teams, all the way from the very best to the disturbingly dismal. Come to think about it, maybe it's time for the state to double the number of equity divisions and make them eight-team brackets like the WCJ. Forget divisions; go with gold, diamond, platinum, zircon, quartz, whatever. Then twice as many schools can be state champions. It would be WCJ all the way. Right on. Pepsi and pizza for everyone.

Why not just call it the West Coast Jamboree 2 and let Clay run it? The seedings would be better.

Just looking at where we stand for the D1 regional semi finals. Seeds 4 v 8, 5 v 8, 6 v 7, 2 v 6.

All the 1 and 3 seeds are gone. Only one each of 2, 4 and 5 seeds. Instead of "competitive equity" maybe we should call the current system "blind lottery".

Thanks for the compliment ... I think.

But I have to say that the big plaques we give out (Dave Jackson started that tradition) make it seem that all the divisions are equal, and to those who don't really grasp the way the tournament works, seeing a WCJ first place trophy and hearing someone say "We won the West Coast Jamboree" makes it appear more impressive than it is.

Then again, when we won a division at Bentley (and we were actually really bad but our opponents were worse), it was something to be proud of.
