Dougherty Valley trailed 60-33 in the second half before staging a furious comeback.

San Ramon looked great for 2.5 quarters, then unfortunately, in my humble opinion, a referee changed the whole flow of the game. Dougherty Valley shoots 25 free throws in the 4th quarter alone, while SRV was getting manhandled on the other end and getting no calls. Very good game, just unfortunate when referees dictate outcomes.

Both games were incredible high level High School basketball contests. De La Salle fought back from down 12 in the 2nd half to force OT, but 6th seeded Granada continued their impressive league tourney run in winning their 3rd game in 3 nights to earn a ticket to the EBAL Final at Dougherty on Saturday.

SRV came out guns a blazing’ in jumping out to an early 35-18 lead on Dougherty. They were making 3’s as well as just about everything they tossed up. They had to have shot about 80-85% percent in extending the lead to 50-31 at the half. The 5th seeded Wolves came out even hotter to start the 2nd half and were up 60-33 on the top seeded Wildcats about 2 minutes into the 3rd quarter.

Coach Hansen called timeout, and basically told the kids they had nothing to lose and time to step up. DV tightened up their press and started hitting shots while SRV finally went cold. SRV hit a last second shot to close the 3rd quarter still up 66-52. But Beaseley, Sevilla & Co. was on a roll by then, and continued their torrid press and shooting. With still 3 1/2 minutes left DV took their first lead of the game, and was on a 40-9 run. Beaseley had more than 40 tonight, including about 30 in the 2nd half, before fouling out. SRV was forced to foul DV playing catch up after that, and DV converted on most of those in closing out the highly entertaining game.

A shocking turn of events and momentum seldom seen in a high school game. A tale of 2 halves. Both teams played their tails off and will be tough outs in the NCS and NorCal playoffs!

Officiating certainly played a factor, and there were plenty of calls to frustrate both sides. But we got to see both teams play at their absolute best for stretches. What a night! Glad I was there.

details please. how many missed box outs did the ref have? how many turnovers? how many times did the ref not help the helper? how many front ends did he miss?

going on a 40-9 run losing a 27 point lead in 12 minutes has NOTHING to do with a ref and ALL to do with the players. THE BEST PLAYER ON THE COURT IS 5'10 AT MOST. if someone on defense doesnt say I GOT HIM AND HE WONT SCORE AGAIN that is on the team.

this, all of this. if you cant adjust when you go cold you blow a 3-1 or give up 40-9 runs.

I have no horse in this game, just enjoy EBAL basketball and it was one heck of a game. I mentioned the refs due to the difference in game calling from the first 20 minutes to the last 12. SRV continued to play the defense they played the first half, yet they went from committing 8 team fouls in first half to being called for over 26 team fouls in second half. Also, it was DV that got desperate defensively and a began to be more physical which created turnovers, but a lot of them were due to hacks that just weren’t called. Three SRV starters fouling out and one on a technical was also a big factor, but yet it was DV that appeared to be getting the benefit of the calls. It’s not that often you see referees changing the way they call games three quarters through a game too often. Just what I observed. Overall, great game and would love to see those two teams match up again this season.

We all know refs can be a factor in games…..allowing certain physicality at times, giving star players benefit of the doubt, being swayed by coaches, etc. Doesn’t happen often, but does happen from time to time. Like I said, in this particular game what I saw was play calling drastically change from the first 20 minutes to the last. Whistle was being quickly called on one side and swallowed on the other.

ok, what benefit does Chris, Phil, and Todd have from helping one team out? None of them went to either school and have no kids at either school?
Usually good teams, players and coaches adjust. To erase that great of a deficit in that little of time there had to be a lot of live ball turnovers which lead to lay ups. As well as if the team was shooting 3's and missing, that leads to break outs for easy transition buckets.
Unfortunately teams do not work on their defense as much as they work on shooting 3's so fouls tend to happen. ALOT.
Not all contact is a foul, RSBQ must be disrupted.

Absolutely right, not all contact is a foul, but apparently after being down 27 any contact against DV all of the sudden became a foul…..25 free throws in the 4th quarter alone……unheard of. Just what I observed.

Who’s Chris, Phil and Todd?

Half of those free throws came in the final 2 minutes when SRV had to foul to stop the clock and try to prolong the game. Fortunately for DV, they are a good free throw shooting team.

As Ethan pointed out above, there were plenty of calls that went both ways. The biggest factor last night was the big Mo. Once SRV started hitting shots early and DV was missing, you could see DV tighten up and play tentatively. SRV was on fire and confident as shot after shot fell.

Then once the Momentum shift took place in the 3rd quarter (yes there were some calls involved, which is part of the game, but you don’t get a T by accepting the call and moving on), SRV was tentative and those effortless shots were no longer falling, and passes were now being tipped. DV clearly had regained the Mo and was aggressive, and SRV was hoping not to lose.
It was a great HS basketball game to watch.

up 27.. let that sink in. you must take care of the ball. you must honor the ball. you must have good shot selection.
they live to see another day thankfully.

Very true about taking care of the ball, but that’s where I really think the refs missed some critical calls that would of been free throws for SRV as oppose to fast break points for DV. Either way, two very good talented teams that should go deep in NCS and NorCal. Would love to see them match up again for a third time this season…..first two games were classics!

I agree. I was thinking about it. First, it’s Hs basketball with 8 min periods. You dig yourself a 27 pt hole and the math is almost impossible to come back from based on possessions alone. 2nd, SRV is a very good team. You aren’t talking about some team that was banking in contested 3’s and got the lead. This is a legit d2 state champ caliber team. They must have imploded. Run the Offense, take good shots, don’t turn ball over. Something went way off course..

Beasley is a 5”9 athletic trey young. Shifty as all hell. Damn near impossible to stop in HS unless you got 6”4 long athletic kids all over floor and a 6”9 shot blocker at rim. He will be good at USF but he won’t be doing this stuff. Size does matter.

What went way off course was how the game was being called after SRV being up 27. Once again, just my opinion and how I saw it. They began to call any contact or what appeared to be on SRV defense and allowed DV defense to have their way. This allowed the momentum to change, stopping clock for free throw attempts….25 free throws for DV in 4th, and yes, a lot of frustration on SRV side. At the 27 pt lead mark, free throw attempts for both teams were at 13 and 11 respectively……at the end of the game it was SRV 17….DV 34. That was what went wrong, yes, players play the game, but referees can definitely have an impact,

how many were shot while in the double bonus and trying to extend the game?
someone gotta stop the only person on the team that can beat you. he wouldnt have made it to the basket not once when the lead got to 10.
but today kids are different. it would have been the pistons on jordan
