This game scheduled for 9/2/22 is the South Section HOLY BOWL in Modesto between the Raiders of Central Catholic (Modesto) vs the Rams of St Mary’s (Stockton).

Will this Holy Bowl be a David vs Goliath story where the huge underdog (the Rams) overcome the odds and defeats the favorite (the Raiders)? Or will this be another Massacre of the Innocents (the incident in the nativity narrative of the Gospel of Matthew in which Herod the Great, king of Judea, orders the execution (by the Raiders of Modesto) of all male children two years old and under in the vicinity of Bethlehem - aka the young Rams of Stockton)?

Praying for a miracle (David wins again!).

Since my friends grandson is out for a few games( concussion protocols. I think I am going to hit the game. Should be a good game. And I can get a Lockford sausage!
Unless CC got a bunch of new skilled players I think they just might be a little over rated. I saw them play a couple if times last year. Last year Kimbal beat Oakdale
Last year Oakdale lost to CC! In Kimbill game Oakdale got out played. CC game Oakdale didn't play well too many simple mistakes.

I‘m not so sure about that.

They led St. Francis at the half and into Q4 this past week.

After the Holy Bowl South game this week, they’ll face Serra (who just beat Folsom), De La Salle, and a St. John Bosco juggernaut that just annihilated perennial Texas power Allen by 38 points in Texas.

Something tells me we’ll have a pretty good gauge on CC once league play begins.

But so far they are looking pretty good.

Agreed! I am just saying as seeing them play every year. In our league. And they are close to my home. So I sneak over and watch some of their games. As stated before I like their Lockford sausage!! And VOL schools always back other.
When my nephew played in Oakdale I started going to the games first time since high school. The first game I went to they had a couple of Amy guys parachute the flag into the Corral. Joe Montana was at the game I was hooked. But that was the only game they lost. Merzon's first section championship. My nephew had Trent's number when he played.
High school football is just good family fun. When my kids outgrew hanging with me. I got kids from my church to go.
Good night I had to drop my son at work at 12 couldn't sleep got on here. Once again good night!

Possibly interesting anecdote: I actually saw Coach Merzon play in HS.

My cousin was a senior on El Camino’s 84 D2 Championship team. I was in 8th grade at the time. My uncle took me to see the game out at Abbott Field and it ended up scoreless at end of regulation and finished 6-0 for the Eagles in OT.

The game was highly affected by the weather and field conditions — as many games were back in those days — and neither team could score in the mud bowl.

I had never heard of Oakdale before that game, but do remember Merzon as their QB. As a result I always rooted for him to succeed at Oakdale when I first heard he had landed the job around 2000 (IIRC). He obviously developed into a great HC. And was a pretty good QB back in the day.

Trent is the just the right fit for Oakdale. He coached kids. And help raise men. My nephew was good HS football player. Could have played JUCO. But like many Oakdale kids chose to serve our country. Marine. OKG fits military service..
Trent is also hilarious off the field. Great sense of humor.

I’m going to miss this year’s Holy Bowl because my son planned a birthday dinner for my wife (his mom). Hopefully, I get back from dinner to catch the 2nd half on NFHS Network. Don’t think the family will be happy if I’m streaming it on my phone at the restaurant. Will also check back here for commentary. Remember, the Rams are very young. So low expectations. Just praying it’s a good game and no one gets hurt on either team.

Where are your priorities?! hahaha

So my question to this fact is MCC over-rated or is SF under-rated?
May be difficult to answer this early, I thought CC looked very strong. It was Saint Francisfirst game of the year, so you have to give them kudos for knocking off a very tough CC team right out of the gate.

Not only is CC a very, very good team this year, having being battle tested vs St. Francis and 2 games under their belt will give them a huge edge vs St Mary’s whose only game was against West, which offered no competition, at all, and may mislead the Rams who will be in for a shock when they face the Raiders tonight. It’s friggin night and day!

The starting SM QB this year actually played vs CC in last year’s Holy Bowl when the starter was injured from the DLS game. I sometimes think it might have been a different game if SM was able to play their starter, Cruz Herrera, in that game. But, in reality, the SM defense could not stop the CC offense when it mattered. Two interceptions in that game for Hunkin were costly. But, can’t overcome mistakes if the defense can’t stop the opponents offense.

CC couldn’t stop Jayden Marshall in that game with over 200 yards rushing. But, all of that was mute because CC took the lead from those picks and never looked back, with CC winning 41-27 at St. Mary’s. Keep in mind CC had 4 picks the year before against Cruz Herrera, but the Rams overcame this and still pulled out the victory, 42-34, at Central Catholic.

Hunkin no doubt will be seeking to redeem himself, going 4-4 with two 2 TDs vs West. But, CC pass rush and secondary is much better than West. My curiosity will be to see if CC can contain the Rams ground game. SM RB #2 Asante Carter is pretty good. Also, #22 Maghoney is not too shabby, either. Anticipate CC crowding the box to stop the run and pressure the QB. We’ll see if Hunkin is able to get the ball out to the flat and if the SM’s can find open space for big gains. It will much more difficult vs the CC defense. SMs key to any remote chance of winning is keep the turnovers down and turn this game into a shootout hoping CC makes mistakes. I really see a speed vs size game, where I think speed is only victorious in this game if size makes mistakes and turns the ball over (fumbles or INTs). Also, depth may be a key as well since CC will have many players playing both ways. This may be something that St Francis was able to take advantage of in CC’s wearing down late in the game.

Any feedback from CC perspective much appreciated.

This Rams D is a lot better than I thought. And the Rams offense is loaded.

And much of this Rams team are Juniors, especially the skilled positions (QB, RB, WR). St. Mary’s is poised to make some noise in SJS and NorCal this year. But, imagine next year. Wow!

I don’t think the 2 games under CC’s belt helped them or was too much of an advantage?

Confirms my observation at the pre-season scrimmage that Central wasn't anything special, or at the least was not anywhere close to what they were rated. Perceptions are formed from previous years and CC gets that benefit, deserved or not.

Or maybe St. Mary’s has something pretty special going on with the young team they have this year? It’s still much too early to assess, in my opinion.

I just watched the game again. CC at best have a 6 and 4 season. And more likely 5 and 5. I think they lose to Manteca. Unless Manteca has a mental block. They have yet to beat CC since they joined VOL.
