Irish 4-A Nor-Cal CHAMPS! How does that sound?

Congratulations to Sacred Heart. Good Luck in your title game.
Anybody have any insights about the winner of the Northview/Colony bout?
Would be interested to learn about either/or.
Colony was ahead most of the game and Northview came back and won it by one point. 27-26.
Northview was ranked #237 in the State and Colony at #163. Colony was ahead with 20 points scored in the first quarter, leading 20-7. Each team scored a TD in the third, then Northview came back with two TD's in the 4th.

Northview lost to #94 Bonita 27-13 which was their only sub-100 ranked opponent. They also lost 29-28 to 402nd-ranked Los Altos (Hacienda Heights) and to 355th-ranked Covina 29-28.

Pretty phenomenal event. Just uttering SH Football and champions of any sort is pretty unbelievable. I went to the game because it was just an unlikely event. Chico had no chance at all. So much so SH messed around and accumulated I think more penalty yards than actual yards gained in the game. Pretty full crowd on the home side with as I'd expected more alumni / parents / family / friends of the players than actual student body. Our legendary Kevin Greene was in attendance as well.

When SHC played SF. They Gave gaves a heck of a game. SF pulled away in the 4th quarter. Not too many teams could do that. Congrats!

That St. Francis game was closer than the score indicated, however Lancers just kept leaning and leaning until that levee broke and SH really couldnt do much. Also Spears did not play that game due to COVID protocols, so who knows.

I sat next to a fan who brought up this team started out 0-5 and I told him they easily could have been 4-1 had they cleaned up and made adjustments to positioning, personnel, play calling, eliminating dumb penalties, and stop giving up the home run play. They checked all those boxes since and look at them now... stacking chips.

This rock needs to keep rolling in the next following years. That coaching staff kids/families are going to want to play for. SH cannot lose this momentum and this be a one year blip. Just think how much more stronger they wouldve been if Silver stayed vs going to Serra, or if they had really good RB they've historically had like Heard, Williams-Sheppard, Miles, Yarnway, Sheppard, etc.

However this season ends, this team should be really proud as alumni, true city fans are just beaming at this team. LFG IRISH!

Pretty fun watching this year Irish Football as a fan from the 80s. That second quarter was the most penalized Ive seen in awhile but contained more fun highlights of years and years of being a fan of IRISH football..and no one saw this coming!!! This team is selfless and just figures out a way to win with what they have and definitely not perfect but its beautiful to watch.

I think that is some of the beauty of this team...Some of these guys are just pure athletes but don't actually fit the role of playing one position only well, but "collectively" they play football well. They make plays, most exciting IRISH team since Ive followed IRISH football since 1981. Yes, It would have been great for Silver to stay, his dad was a coach too at SHC. I agree tho, let's hope this is the start of something big, the sky is the limit. Props to Coach Mac and all the staff who made this an historical year for SHC, most people can only dream of reaching this limit even with winning seasons every year!

Congrats to the Irish - still think it's weird (wrong) to see private school teams from powerhouse conferences get placed in lower divisions for football and basketball.

I dont think you do this classification for football. The WCAL apple basket is not full of apples from the same tree. Serra, St. Francis are on their own tree. Bellarmine, VC, Mitty and SI are another tree. And SH and Riordan are another.

There is no case for SH or Riordan to ever be higher than Div 3, unless they have a one-off year where all the stars aligned and they went 8-2, 7-3. They simply are not drawing the types of players that Serra (all of San Mateo), St. Francis (all of Peninsula) are getting year after year after year.

For San Jose you're basically seeing a 3 way split of the talent. SI has their own pool with affluent SF and Marin County kids, and SH and Riordan basically hope more of the leftover talent from SSF/Daly City/SF to go pick them vs. the other. SH is rightfully where they should be in the playoffs.

Riordan did beat SHC by 4 TDs and probably could’ve caused some noise in D2. Now that it’s all equity, I think the cap on league qualifiers is redundant but the ccs/big publics won’t change it. Congrats to SHC.

Riordans strength of schedule wasn't there compared to other schools as well. But losing to SI knocked them out of any contention. The system was never perfect but thats the system we always had, SHC did have the "stars align" for them this year so to speak in many ways. Hopefully, the stars stay aligned for awhile for the coaches and the players who sacrifice way more than average to play football at a non-football school. Yet the school managed to find some gems in between the years. I hope SF will come back as a destination for sports for the youth in one way or another but it certainly doesn't look that way currently so in the end SHC will do what it always does, keep plugging away with what they have.

North view is a Public with the enrollment of 1000 students. They would not win a WCAL team. Both teams had incredible runs with losing records sifting through the competition. SHC will win by 28 points.

You never know...thats why they play the games, would anyone dare say the IRISH would beat Bellarmine this year or almost VC?

SH let that VC game get away from them. It took a herculean effort by a bonafide D1 star in Dickey to break all those tackles and score. SH should have triple teamed him. There was no one else that was going to beat them.

Not every team in a powerhouse conference is necessarily a "powerhouse" team. Sacred Heart had to put up with abject ignorance in 2008 when people were asking the coaches if they felt "ashamed" for being in the CCS Small Schools Division playoffs. It was the first outright championship in 95 seasons. It wasn’t like Serra rolling over D-5 schools.

Northview lost to #410-ranked Los Altos (Hacienda Heights) (Finishing 2-8) 29-28 and lost to 98th-ranked Bonita 27-13.
They beat #197-ranked Colony who scored 20 points in the first quarter on them and finished the season 7-7. Colony lost to 3-7 and #205-ranked Santiago 28-7.

Some people here think that’s exactly the way it should be. Calprep (which I think it’s a great website btw) rankings and into brackets baby! Damn the public’s! Especially those pesky overachieving small schools!

I know SHC hasn’t been a power and was even outed from the WCAL for awhile but still that have 1400 students at a parochial school. I still tip my hat to them for winning the games that are scheduled for them, despite losing so many close games early they kept the team together, good job coaches and kids. They should roll over 1200 student public Northview, who is actually having a great year despite their school being over 70% (!) low income. I tip my hat to them proving people that any ethnic group can play ball and play it well. SHC should beat them pretty easily though Calprep 27-14 sounds about right if it’s even that close.

And Riordan had to finish the season starting against SHC with its backup qb... A playoff berth was theirs to be had, but it was not to be this season. Good luck Irish!

Nail on the head. Riordan very easily couldve been in this position. Perhaps a win vs SI likely would have placed them in same D3 bracket. Cruz magically turned into Don Coryell in the 2nd quarter and the rest was history.

1400, but i think you really have to take into consideration they are a true inner city school with no actual FB on campus. How many schools dont have a practice field right outside their lock room?

You also mention basketball. At one time teams could play up. I have been a tad out the loop as of late, but JKidd played D1, Riordan played up back

Best comment yet. Right on the money. SHC football is lucky to have a a field across the street. Back in my days guys were roughing it to Polo Fields, after school then home.

Exactly my point, This one is for the city and for all the IRISH fans who supported many teams no one ever cared about. You have to really love the sport of football to play at a school that doesn't get the traditional support other schools get, let alone WCAL schools. No one and I mean no one would have seen this coming..that is why its beautiful and magical to watch.

And we took the bus to practice and back home for those of us that didn't live in the sunset or had a car...some of us joked, this is like "welfare football" back then..The struggle was real, you had to lug all your gear and your books everyday...lol. Go IRISH!

Scott what year did you graduate. Don’t mean to blow your cover, but I remember my classmates lugging to practice back in the days

The school went independent on its own. They could have re-joined the league any time. Why they stayed out of the league for 18 years is beyond me but they really should have been CCS-eligible as an independent. But that's another issue.
Also, for a school playing 118 seasons over a 128-year period and not winning an outright title for 95 years, the answer is YES, they deserve a playoff berth. Riordan had a chance to beat SI and blew it. Plus, a 4A State Title is nothing to sneeze at. It wasn't a "gift". There was plenty of good competition at that level and some great talent and coaching on that "mediocre" team. Not everybody has to be a De La Salle clone.

Welp you lived it. I am 1987-1991 range. Take care man
Fun times, builds character, help me learn you got to prove you really want something and stick with it. Our senior year we ended up 6-4. I would say life was difficult but probably much simpler than what kids have to deal with today. Didn't apply to SI, but would never to go to Riordan either, lived in Northbeach. Still love high school sports because its pure passion. Go IRISH..Take care

non city WCAL guys imo circled the SH game because of the coolness of playing at KEZAR, in its original state. NFL Legends played/coached on that field
My freshman year I was in the cheering section for SH aka my alum, on the other side was a cheering section of SI students, we each sat across from one another on the 50, and a good 25,000 plus empty seats as it was the last Bruce Mahoney game in the original Kezar.

Irish beat SI 19-14 in 1988. The final event was a Frosh game between Sacred Heart and Mitty that next Wednesday. Do you recall the score?

Man good question. But this was 1987, didn’t know we played another game
OK. I was thinking 1988. Good to beat SI any time.
had to be 87, I was a freshman and graduate in 91. Ironically my dad went to polytechnic, I literally have a yearbook with a photo of old Kezar packed for a game. Times have changed, just glad Kezar still exists
