Carrillo scored on 4th and goal from the 2 with about 12 seconds left. Then they went all in and cashed out on the 2 point conversion. Rancho couldn't stop the run. It was one of those weird situations where they probably shoulda let Carrillo score with a little over a minute left but 4 & goal for it all is good odds also. Carrillo snapped Ranchos home win streak.

Good win for Carrillo. Newman killed Casa 41-13. It was 41-0 at half. Sounds like Newman stays healthy and they should go undefeated in league. It will be interesting watching them play out. They just might have enough to win D4.

It was a real nice win for Carrillo. Per PD Preps snapped Ranchos home win streak at 31 games. Stylistically Carillo was a bad match-up for Rancho. Rancho had no answers for Carrillos solid blocking and hard running. Rancho needs to figure out how to stop the run which is easier said than done. Their style and personnel leaves them vulnerable to a ground and pound type team. If Carrillo could throw when Rancho committed more to the run it could have been worse.

Newman is looking good. They just need to keep doing what they are doing. I think if they can improve their passing game over the rest of the season that will pay big dividends for them. Outside of that Newman is looking pretty complete.

And people bashed me because I said Rancho was weak.....

Turns out I was right...again......;)

G61, you were not correct. Rancho Cotate got upset by a program that they historically have difficulty with. An upset does not make a team weak ;)

An upset to Carillo makes them weak, yes. Carillo would get blasted by 5 touchdowns by almost any SJS school. Different competition up there in the sticks where you guys are.

You know G61 is just typing to type. Carrillo is actually a solid team. Passed the eye test. The line was nice. Had a nice back. The offense is deceptive as always. They just need more balance on O and a better pass D. They will be a tough out in the playoffs. I can see how they don't match up well against some teams but overall they were solid. Watching the game I was impressed by Newmans margin of victory. I wonder how Benicia was able to beat Carrillo so soundly.

Even with how easily Carrillo ran the ball it came down to the back sticking the ball over the goal line just before the defender slapped it out of his hands. It was a great finish for Carrillo.

Good info. But, solid according to what standard? Local standard? Not trying to be mean, but let's put it in perspective here.

Solid compared to all the teams I have watched on The Cube.

Bad loss for the Ranch to a very below average Carriillo team. Surprised by this result.

I wouldn't necessarily say Carrillo is solid, because I dont think they really are. But, even saying that I know that outside of Newman Carrillo is the main team that gives RC fits in league. However, I had no clue they would put up such a fight in an away game. Bad loss for RC and like you all have said, a clock managing run style team can really put these boys on their heels

Basically you could say Newman has 1 bad loss this year and its was to a top 20 team in the State. (Clayton Valley). Factor in a pretty big D1 athlete in Brookshire not playing and you would have had a much better game. Not like he's an o-lineman. Brookshire has the ball 90% of the game and is a big time play maker. You could argue he's as important to his team as any player in Norcal. I would put Newman up against any D3 or D4 team in NCS this year. On any given day they could win. This is a good team regardless of area. I would say Rancho and Maria are above average and the rest of the league is weak. Slick is right. Rancho has some excellent players but holes on there Defense.

I would pay big money to see Harris from Antioch play. He will be playing on SEC Saturday soon for Bama and then on Sunday. Incredible player.

We've sent out a "feeler" to Antioch already for the blue turf. Think they are up for it?

You really think they were below average? I mean you said it so you must believe it. Looked good to me. Maybe it was a style thing. This Rancho team is trying to out run people. Not fight them in a phone booth which is what MC did to them.

I think they lose allot but they got a whole lot returning. Hopefully they are. We all want to see the show!

I do believe it. Watched 21-3 halftime lead against Benicia turn into 52-28 loss. Cardinal Newman game was lost from the kick off.

Yeah they are below average. Personally think a coaching change is way overdue. They do less with more every year. By all accounts Higgins is a great guy, just his teams don't produce.

The Carrillo athletic department overall is outstanding and their are athletes at that school. My daughter plays in the soccer program and the expectations and coaching blow her travel teams out of the water. Same with all their other sports, they produce (numerous league and section titles) and yet they have mediocrity at the marquee sport ever year. A below average squad.

I'd argue that underachieving or not playing up to potential is different than being solid but I see where you're coming from.

The MC- Benicia score was 21-16 at halftime with MC being ahead. Benicia gave up 2 fumbles and 2 ints in 1st half. 2nd half obviously was cleaner which produced a different outcome. MC has some size and a few athletes but will be challenged in playoffs.

I don't know what the RC defensive coordinator is doing with their LB's, but in the CN game the LB's were taking themselves out of the game. The 2 OLB's, upon snap of ball were just heading for c gap, straightaway, without reads, like run blitzes. Left just the Middle LB for everything between the tackles. You could run all day right up the gut against that, and CN did that. I didn't see the MC/RC game, but it sounds like MC did the same thing.

You could be right on the halftime score. Didn't matter they got boat raced the second half.

MC soccer program (girls) is top 5 in the nation every year. Its ridiculous how good they are. But you are right. Something doesn't click in Hoops and Football. They are solid in baseball though.

I completely agree that Carrillo needs a coaching change. Jay Higgins has been their coach for the last 15 years. His overall record: 71-83-0 heading into this season. His best season: 8-5 in 2005. They lost to Cardinal Newman 21-0 in the section finals.

If Newman can improve passing game...please go into more detail.

Just get to the point where they are as confident putting it in the air as their ground game. They will face a team down the road who will take away the run and force them to win in the air. They just need to be ready for it. Cronin knows how to get them to that point. He's done it many times before.

What are your thoughts?

MC ran everywhere. Wouldn't really say it was scheme but I will go back and look. There were a few times Rancho walked a S up and MC's back would get outside of him and hit the stovepipe full speed for a touchdown. Like the Newman game though they got beat at the point of attack. I wish I could say it was totally scheme because that's easy to fix.

What are your thoughts?[/QUOTEFrom what I've seen they can pass when they need to and run when they need to. They seem to take what their opponents give them. Brookshire can basically run when he wants and is very accurate while Wallace is a threat on any given play. Last few games Cronin seems to be getting other offensive players involved so they don't key on the few weapons they've used thus far. Just my opinion though.

Newman is very thin at the receiver position. You take away Wallace and that is 90% of the production. Any coach in CA would love to have Brookshire at QB. He is a better athlete than passer but the guy can still air it out. If Rubattino was on the field with Wallace this year it would have been a great attack.

I like Newmans style. If you can impose your will on the ground that should always be plan A. If everything shakes out in a best case scenario for them they could see a nice SJS or CCS team in the regional and who knows in a state bowl game. I figure once you get to that point in the season they should face a really legit D. They saw one in CVC but didn't have their horse Brookshire. In the next two weeks it would be nice for them to switch up the philosophy a little. Brookshire was 10 for 12 last week and a few TD's. Maybe bump up the attempts a little just to see? I know the score was out of control to be throwing but just some more attempts to get the feel before its forced on them.

Newman is good. I am still a bit shaken over the fact that they will face Fort Bragg in a playoff game. It doesn't sound right...

Cody baker was coming on strong for newman at wr until he got hurt vs CVC. Wallace and brookshire could be a special tandem and do a lot of damage. No doubt Brookshire is d1 and it looks like Wallace is making a strong case to get some d1 looks. The defense is staring to wind into shape as well. When they're clicking they're scary.

43 for 703 and 12 receiving TD's through 7 games. I know he had two more last night. I read in the PD that Wallace caught 4 of em last night. Cardinal Newman is always a scary team when they're balanced.

I think wallace has 17. Had a 95 yd kick return as well. Newman is capable of putting up points in a hurry.
