Mitty v. HMB

The HMB coach is quoted as saying the Mitty debacle was a positive experience for his players. Really? It reminds us of the widely touted British claim that the Dunkirk evacuations were a triumph. Spin never ends. And how was it for the Mitty teens? The Monarchs would have been better off scrimmaging among themselves. What can they possibly get out of such a gross mismatch? Bad habits. False bravado. Mistaken expectations. Parental chest-puffing. Injuries for no discernible reason. Please. Stop with this non-competitive baloney. We have seen enough. End the mandatory eight-team CCS Open Division. Get real. Oh, and by the way, think "equity," everyone's new favorite buzzword.

Monday CCS Open Division final score: Valley Christian 74, Half Moon Bay 23. Another learning experience for the public school. To what end?

Pretty gross the committee would subject HMB and SHC to this. They had no business being in Open. Next time just forfeit these games and just wait for NorCals to begin. Plain stupid and embarrassing.

HMB requested to go to the OPEN - their coach chose to take the automatic bid into NorCals even though he knew they'd get spanked. The argument can be made they shouldn't have been allowed into the OPEN, but they weren't "subjected" to anything. They got what they asked for.

SF just lost by 30, PA just lost by 32 - should they have been excluded also? If so, then the OPEN should be just 4 teams, or is a 30 point loss competitive?

Yup. I'll go one further. Open should've just been 3. Mitty, Pinewood and SI. Why bother messing around and see 30+ point blowouts? You like to see that?

Valley beat SI and played Mitty tough twice.

SF beat Valley and hung with SI and Pinewood

I have no problem with those teams making it, even if their chances of winning were slim.

St. Francis 51, HMB 21. Wednesday final. In three Open games, HMB outscored by 150 points. All blowouts. All non-competitive. All utterly pointless. All a waste of time for the three winners, Mitty, VC and SF. A learning experience for the Cougars? Their reward may well be placement in a higher NorCal equity division than they really merit. We'll have to wait and see.

The bold volunteer experiment is over. HMB, beaten to a prep pulp in the CCS Open Division on three forgettable evenings, had hoped for "a learning experience" that would toughen them up for the NorCal playoffs. Didn't happen. Instead, the Cougars, charitably (and shockingly) placed as the No.11 unit in Division 4, fell in their opener last night to Gateway in San Francisco. Gateway. Not Mitty. Gateway. There was no more gas in the coastal tank.

You can bet your bottom dollar that the HMB mentor will not volunteer for another Open Division suicide mission anytime soon.
