Here's a thought: Who will be the first NorCal prep football (or basketball or baseball or whatever) athlete to ink a deal that pays him (or her) for name, image or likeness? Hey, if it's OK for the college crowd, why not the preps? Or, for that matter, your favorite 12-year-old star?

is it even a rule for high schooler? they can have jobs

This is a slippery slope. Giving a child (likely his/her family with dollar signs in their eyes) that kind of entitlement can lead a multiverse of power struggles, corruption and imbalance in the "amateur" world. Not one red cent will be left on the table. This is where we are headed.

So should teenage olympians give back all their endorsement money?

Oh ok, just checking to see if it’s ok that those teenagers have endorsements.
Generally, people dont know the process of being an Olympian comes at a significant cost and many set themselves back financially. So any endorsement money which is these Olympians prime source of compensation I am 1000% behind the athlete getting as much as they can, no matter their age.

And here we go! Good for this young man.

First, this is a great opportunity for Mikey Williams.

However, I want to play this out a little bit. If you have a large social meida following and are considered an elite prospect, do you shy away from competition that could hurt your brand? And what does that mean for prep athletes either in HS competition or outside events.

This kind of attention and endorsement could even cost a kid scholarship opportunities, especially if they don't have the maturity to deal with all the attention and/or they allow it to affect their work ethic. Back in the day my son got his first three offers from Weber State, Hawaii and UNR. During the summer between his junior and senior years he and I took an unofficial visit to Reno. The day we were there offensive coordinator Nick Rolovich, now the HC at Washington State spent quite a bit of time with us talking and watching film of the Wolf Pack offense. The subject of recruiting sites like Rivals, Scout, 247Sports, etc....came up and he said they could give a rats butt what recruiting sites say and the number of stars next to a kid's name. They look at film and determine if a kid fits in their system. Coach Rolo was really nice to us that day.

All of these situations are layered so hard to judge from the outside. Money today is hard to turn down especially the type of money a high profile player can get. However, starting college early to "cash in" might have adverse affects on playing development which would hurt long term earnings.

No right answer for sure

The average d1 college player (on scholarship) won’t see a dime of any of this new money. Arkansas football has a bunch of the o lineman getting free bbq. The hogs! The rare super star can’t miss prospect will always get paid. and probably has always in the past as we have come to learn.

The NIL changes everything about recruiting and IMO, not for the good of HS and college football athletics and it's student-athletes.

It's a whole new world out there. Money talks and every one of us listens. The mantra is "What's my cut?"
