NorCal Tip Off Tournament at Rocklin and Whitney

Gonna be a good one, solid teams on both sides of the bracket. Curious to see Berkley and El Diamanté, two teams from out of the area who match up in the last game of the night at Rocklin High.

Berkeley has gone through some hard times recently for a school with such a rich history. Their ‘17-‘18 squad was 23-7, the last time they were a real threat. Let’s hope this year’s team can bring it.

Day 1 scores:

Clovis West 84 El Camino 60
Rodriguez 81 Fortune Early 38
Sacramento 56, Pleasant Grove 52
Whitney 73 Western Sierra 17
Del Oro 59 Laguna Creek 54
Pleasant Valley 63 El Capitan 37
Berkeley 68 El Diamante 53
Rocklin 88 Natomas 57

I was able to stay the whole night and catch the nightcap between Berkley and El Diamanté….frankly, I was a little bit surprised by the lack of athleticism by both sides…each team had a few guys that passed the eye test, but ultimately each team left something to be desired. My best guess is that we have an all SFL final on the Rocklin Side of the bracket, (Del Oro and Rocklin) and a Clovis West Vs. Whitney battle on the other side. Digging deeper:

1. Rodriguez will give Clovis West a sturdy test. Saw them this summer, I liked their Mocse and shooting, assuming they have all their guys from over the summer.
2. Pleasant Valley is missing 5 of their top 7 guys to football…they are going to make another deep run in State once they hit their stride. They only suited 8 last night. Kramer is a load.
3. Rocklin only starts one senior….the other starters: one freshman, one sophomore and two juniors…they are one year away from making some real noise.
4. Del Oro is missing their best two guards, both banged up a little bit…their starting QB in football is also quite a basketball player…
5. There are no bad teams in the SFL this year, still TBD if are there any “world beaters” but overall league is going to be a dogfight this year.

Most of Those first games looked terrible. Blowout city. How good is Justin Siena then. They beat Rodriguez by 30. If they give CW a test thn they must have lost a ton to graduation.

And Oak Ridge will be borderline “bad” this year. Besides Olson and soph Edwards they are pretty limited.

I got Folsom as the team to beat right now in Sac Area.

The sfl is very average in hoops. Folsom will run through that league. There isn’t another team that’s a top ten in city.

Justin-Sienna plays Klay’s alma mater tonight in the Vounture Classic at DLS. They should be well tested after this weekend with the quality teams they’ll be seeing.

Well, interestingly enough I saw both Rodriguez and Siena at Siena’s summer tourney this summer…Siena is really good. CW is a machine and reloads every year…they pressure the whole game and run 10-12 quality players using that pressure…Rodriguez won’t win, but they will keep it close for a half…maybe, Lol.

I’ve been high on Justin Siena all year. They return virtually entire team from a state runner up year. They will be a problem for a lot of teams and will face tough comp at DLS.

Agree SFL is not very good in hoops. It’s a football and baseball powerhouse. Folsom will not be challenged and Whitney is always a team that plays hard and will do well in D2. Rocklin always plays a ton of kids, is well coached, and has a good big kid but was already beaten by Pondo who lost a ton from last years champ
team. Granite bay is decent too.

Folsom routed Grant and handled Sheldon easily in their foundation game and should win the Reno tourney.
