Wow... really interesting that the SS got all of its teams in separate divisions, while the NCS and CCS couldn't do the same.

Bellarmine in 3A, if it can limit Vanden's skill guys, should have good chance to win its first state playoff bowl game.

With the big DLS defensive lineman finally back and improved Spartans play, plus some Folsom injuries, what is the prognosis for next Friday's game?

Folsom defense is very very good. Folsoms injuries are on offense but they’re deep. I think Folsom still has just a bit more than DLS can match. I hope it’s a good game.

Overall, it seems like the committee did a nice job with the matchups. Would prefer to not have section games, but not the worst thing either

The thing is that De La Salle takes talent out of the equation with their scheme. It does not really matter how good your talent is on that side of the ball. If you cannot consistently do your job for as unimportant or boring as it may be they will eventually catch you out of position and exploit your lack of discipline.

Agreed but Folsom is very disciplined on defense. Both teams are down from their best years but this game is a toss-up with an edge to Folsom. I have a soft spot for DLS based on connections so I am happy to see them win.

With 2 losses to the Bulldogs in a row, and a state bowl berth on the line, I don’t think Sparty will have any trouble getting motivated for this one.
Agree with this observation. Early in this season the Spartans seemed to lack both discipline and focus. But the last couple of games they seemed to bottle and harness those elusive skills. Add hopefully the healthy return of Thompson, Cooper and Tofaeono. Add the season long maturation of the younger players called up to plug the gaps in the Varsity squad it could be an interesting night at Smurf Stadium.

Ok, but can anyone really say with a straight face that they think Clear Lake would beat either Santa Teresa or Palo Alto?

If this school was in the CCS, they would be champions of a B league, then do B-league things in the playoffs... namely, lose to a 4th place A league team like Santa Teresa or Palo Alto.

I just put on their championship game. It looks like they only have about 22 players on their roster.

In SoCal, the rep in this division (6-AA) might be a school called "Classical Academy"? Are we being serious here?

I think this is a grind it out game in potentially subpar weather conditions. Folsom big game ability is greatly hampered by the loss of Flores. However, don’t be fooled because they have a lot of very good skill players who would star on most teams. #80 has stepped up big time and is a really solid player. (Ray). DLS is playing arguably their best ball and Folsom is at home coming off a very physical sjs champ. It’s a toss up to me but I can’t imagine the difference being anymore than 7pts. I could see 21-17 type game. Should be a good one.

My comment was more about section teams playing each other. Not whether the teams in that matchup were properly placed.

There are always a few issues with the placement, but I thought this year had fewer head scratchers

Yeah but playing the veer or triple option is not even about general discipline. It’s about doing your one job over and over and over and over again. They will f you up but having you defend your assignment a little differently here and there just to make sure you can’t hone in on doing one thing all day.

The typical football fan think it’s a boring offense but those who really know the sport know it is an offense you cannot afford to fall asleep against for a single snap or it will bite you in the ass.

how is home field determined in regional and state games?
Home games for regionals are a mystery. I don't think there is any set criteria other than, where did this team play last time?

For the state games, the top 5 are at one location. This year, it's Saddleback College in Mission Viejo. Presumably, in a couple of years, it could return to a NorCal site. When the top 5 games are in one region, the rest of the games are at the home sites of the other. So, all of the NorCal teams from D-3AA and down will host their SoCal opponents. If/when the top 5 are in NorCal, the SoCal teams will host in the lower divisions.

They have about 380 kids in their school and they are in a very rural county with just a few stoplights. Do they not deserve to win a section title? I know CCS doesn’t really have rural schools so you may not understand. They actually beat a team (St Vincent’s) who went undefeated in a “big school” league and has players from Santa Rosa, Rohnert Park, Petaluma, and Novato.

I think it’s more of a sham that Palo Alto won a section. School over 2,000 kids and with previous success hiding in a small division. Give me a break. You could be coached by Jim harbaugh and he wouldn’t be able to improve clear lake much-no transfers. Got to have players, more important thank coaching.
Congrats to Clear Lake much more of an achievement than Palo Alto or even Santa Teresa.

There are a couple interesting challenges for Folsom, aside from the usual.

With a win, Folsom would be the first team to ever:
  • beat DLS 2x in the same season
  • beat DLS 3x within a 12-month span
There's definitely some groundbreaking history on the line with this matchup.

One other thing that occurred to me recently is that -- while DLS lost their NorCal (sans the Central section) streak last year -- they still have an ongoing streak against the NCS dating back to 12-07-1991.

If Pittsburg couldn't break the streak this season -- when will it happen??

The reading comprehension on this board is sorely lacking. It’s becoming worse more recently. It has to be getting embarrassing now.

First of all, there are rural schools in the CCS. Gonzales, Greenfield, Soledad, and King City are all small one-school towns in farming environments.

Second, I didn’t say anything about Clear Lake not deserving to win an NCS title.

Third, had you taken any context into consideration whatsoever, you’d have seen that I referring to their placement over Santa Teresa and Palo Alto.

Fourth, you demonstrate my whole point. Clear Lake is a tiny school with a tiny roster that just wouldn’t stand up to a program (even a completely struggling version) like Palo Alto. Therefore, they shouldn’t be placed in a higher division.

Fifth, Palo Alto did not “hide” in D-5. I know you’re trying to play on my criticism of the NCS (very poorly, I might add). They were placed there because they barely made the playoffs at all. They were considered one of the weakest 8 teams out of CCS teams that made the playoffs, which clearly is not the same case as Marin Catholic, as recognized by the CIF voters who placed them opposite San Ramon Valley.

Overall I give them a B+. Some really good games this weekend. Obviously we’ll hit the DLS vs Folsom game Friday. But Saturday we are split with 2 wanting to see Pitt and the others wanting to see the Bells.

Pitt vs Manteca is intriguing. The 2 schools are fairly close to each other geographically, but have likely never played each other since they’re in different sections. I like Pitt here and hope Galli goes out on a positive note, but this would be a huge win for Manteca.

Yes, of all the regional games, this one is the most intriguing to me. I like Manteca's chances in this game. But I still haven't decided which one I think will win.

Folsom and DLS has lost some its mystic since they have played several times now both in the regular season and playoffs. The Spartans are definitely the underdog in this matchup.

Another game high on my list is Lemoore @ McClymonds. Lemoore will have the toughened smashmouth approach common in the Central Valley. Mack will feature the inner-city athletes that have produced some good teams over the last several years. Will the Lemoore team be intimidated by inner-city Oakland? Maybe, but more likely they will be excited to prove they are better than a bunch of city kids - and that attitude, if present, might be more debilitating than intimidation. Lemoore has experience with tough city schools from Bakersfield and Fresno. Likewise Mack has experience with different school environments like Bellarmine, Pittsburg and San Ramon Valley. Additionally the Peters and some of his players have a depth of regional and state bowl experience that Lemoore does not have. Leaning toward a Mack win.

Others on my favorite games list are:
Vanden @ Bellarmine - well technically the game is at SJCC but that is BCP's home field. I haven't looked too deeply into this game yet but I think this will be a well-matched one. First glance favors a BCP win.

Menlo @ San Marin - Menlo has improved throughout this season but may be still shy of last year's team. San Marin has mirror the same pattern this season. They are not as good as last season but they have gotten better. Again, I haven't fully looked at this game but I think I'm leaning toward a SM victory.

Ripon Christian @ Hughson - This game intrigues me. RC has made a vast improvement over last year's team but I doubt it is enough to overtake Hughson. Maybe a deeper look will change my mind.

I haven't seen Pitt play much this season. But assuming their defensive team speed and line play is up to their usual standards, I think they may cause Manteca's offense some problems.

The Buffs are pretty much one-dimisional, but a tough dimension to stop. If Pitt can consistently hold the edge and rally to the tackle -- they should win.

Rocklin's defense did well at times, but eventually wore down as the game progressed. During the 2nd half they just couldn't contain the edge. Manteca lives on runs outside the tackle using Nickelson's speed.

Pitt needs to pinch that off and make them run between the tackles. They can still do that, but I don't think they'll break as many big plays.

I’m not the first person to bring this up but can somebody tell me when Pitt has won a big game? They always seem to be on the other side of the coin. No matter how many 4 and 5 star kids they have… and quite frankly there season should be over. I say Manteca’s run game goes bonkers and pitt finds themselves on the losing end again. Manteca just went thru Rocklin and GB. Both teams were playing great football also. I like this team and their unicorn. He will be the best player on the field.

Fair point on winning big games and that their season should be over.

That said, PITT did play close games against Folsom and DLS and I just don’t see this Manteca team or Nickelson faring as well against those opponents. Manteca lost to a Central Catholic team that was smashed by St. Mary’s-Stockton and Folsom by 40 and 35 points respectively,

Furthermore Rocklin had a good season and overachieved considering how much talent they lost but GB was a 4th place team in league at 1-4 whose best win on the season was arguably their rematch against Del Oro who faded late in the season. Rocklin and GB were solid teams, but neither was exceptionally strong.

As for Nickelson, you just seem to me to be overly enamored because he’s committed to FSU which isn’t anywhere near the program it used to be. Joe Ngata went to Clemson and hasn’t exactly exploded during his 4-years there. He was another kid you went gaga over and claimed was an NFL talent.

Nickelson was recruited as a LB, and while he is an exceptional looking athlete and may end up a stud defensive player at FSU I don’t see him as a better RB than Cameron Skattebo was in HS and I don’t recall you gushing over him as an NFL talent. Just saying.

GB is one of the best 1-4 team in the history of the SFL. There record was so misleading. OR was lucky to escape with a win against them and they played everybody tough.

Ngata was on early NFL round trajectory but never could put a full season together. He still is very much an NFL caliber WR who will get an opportunity to play in the NFL.

Nickelson has his choice of nearly every big school. He could have gone to UCLA, Oregon, etc. Not like plenty of pros don’t come out of FSU still.

We shall see. If Manteca does win they will have to put up a lot of points.

Plenty of games of intrigue on this list. I imagine DLS and Folsom will be a statement game! Manteca and Pitt should be a good one, and Grant vs El Cerrito may turn out to be a track meet. An old school JR Pacer’s vs Richmond Steelers Snoop League reunion!

Come to think of it, as another blogger eluded to, a lot of these schools should be playing each other regularly.

MT, Grant, Pitt, Manteca, El Cerrito, Mack, SRV….

A possible McClymonds v Mater Dei matchup looming? That could have a running click halfway through the 1st quarter. Don’t wish that on anyone.

I was talking with someone yesterday about the lack of excitement over the Folsom-DLS game. Seems like the HS football community wanted this game for so long after the Open Division regional game went away, but now that we are about to get it for a fourth time in two years, it kind of feels like just another game of top teams. I do think this will be a chess match type game that should be pretty entertaining on Friday

Games I'm looking forward too:

Folsom-DLS: Neither team is at full strength and they know each other well. What team finds the advantage to move onto state?

Manteca-Pitt: Blake Nichelson is one of the most dominant HS players we have seen recently and Manteca has shown their depth during this run. Is it enough to win at Pittsburg?

Grant-El Cerrito: Lot of good individual matchups should happen. Haven't seen El Cerrito this year, but I liked what I saw from Grant's defense last week.

Marin Catholic-San Ramon Valley: Fun matchup between a pair of top NCS teams that haven't played before that I know of.

PV-Escalon: Always interested in how the Northern Section competes at the NorCal/State level. PV has been on a run in avenging losses to Enterprise and Foothill

@ThunderRam , Nichelson stats last 2 games against great defense. (Rocklin /GB)
+400 yards rushing
8 TD’s
+130 yards receiving

Florida State isn’t exactly chop liver either at #14 in nation,

Let’s see how he plays against Pitt who has stellar athletes. But I’m totally in awe and he jumps out to me like Bowers did at Napa.

Marin Catholic-San Ramon Valley: Fun matchup between a pair of top NCS teams that haven't played before that I know of.
I remember SRV beating Cardinal Newman in the NCS finals at the Coliseum in 2007 prior to the DLS-Cal High D1 matchup. But I can’t recall SRV playing MC either.

Escalon has an amazing program. Small farm town school of 800+ kids. Great football by many small towns in that area of the 209. I think Escalon is going to be the one more excited to play big old 2000+ student Pleasant Valley. Excited for that one.
