Madden was a multi-sport athlete at Jefferson HS in Daly City in the early 1950s. He later played football at the College of San Mateo when the practice football field, gym and swimming pool were located at Coyote Point where facilities had been turned over to the JC by the U.S. Merchant Marines. The amenities were basic, nothing special at all. The Bulldogs did not have a true home field. Madden, as you may know, was an offensive lineman. He was also a close childhood friend of John Robinson who wound up at Serra HS in San Mateo. Both matriculated to Oregon but Madden transferred to Cal Poly SLO and Robinson stayed.

Few have had the impact on the sport as John Madden did. And from the stories I have read throughout the night, was a tremendous person too.
Agree streak. It’s worth watching all the old tributes and highlights. Didn’t matter if you were a lineman from the farm or a rb from inner city. He brought us all together.

Many may not know John Madden was a long time Pleasanton resident. Raised his sons and had business in the town (e.g., Rose Hotel). One son was a coach at Foothill Pleasanton and the other a media company that contributed a lot of content and production to NFL films. I've lived in Pleasanton almost 20 years and used to run into him every once in a while at some hole in the wall lunch places or at the super market. In town, he was just a regular guy and always very humble, funny, smart and came across as a regular guy. He was exactly like he came across in his public persona. The Pleasanton community will really miss him. He really spurred interest and knowledge in the sport of football.

There is some discussion of the town having an annual event to celebrate his birthday in down town.` He had been having some health issues over the last few years, but seemed to beat what what was ailing him the last year. He passed unexpectedly although seems he had a wonderful Christmas with family. When he was coach of the Raiders he would wait in the parking lot of the elementary school his wife Virginia worked at to take her home. He was a one of a kind and never let his fame get to him.
