It was a good weekend for a number of NorCal teams in Arizona.

The event was hosted by Section 7 and they did an incredible job. Although, the event was spread out over several high schools, headquarters was located at Brophy Prep with Central High located next door. Most of the top teams and prospects played at Brophy Prep and Central on Friday night and throughout the weekend. Some of the top teams included Mater Dei, Corona Centennial, Rancho Christian, Damien, Etiwanda, Rolling Hills Prep, Windward, Bishop Gorman and Coronado out of Las Vegas, Mount Si and Eastside Catholic out of Washington along with Norcal’s Archbishop Mitty, Bishop O’Dowd, Campolindo, Weston Ranch, Modesto Christian, Vanden and several other teams out of Norcal making the long trip for the chance to play in front of a few hundred college coaches as well as great competition.

On Friday, Mitty pulled out a tough win over San Diego power Torrey Pines. Weston Ranch also had a big win on Friday over SoCal power Bishop Montgomery. Bishop O’Dowd won big in their opening game over Rangeview of Colorado. Modesto Christian, who was short handed, fell behind by double digits in the first half of their opening bracket game against Mount Si. What looked to be a potential blow out by Mount Si ended up being a gritty fought game by MC to come all the way back and tie up the game late in the 2nd half. MC eventually fell short and lost to a very talented Mount Si team with at least 3 D1 players on their roster including their 6’5 point guard Jabe Mullens. Modesto Christian
dropped their first 3 games before landing a win in their final game on Sunday.

Bishop O’Dowd won their first 2 games before losing to Bishop Gorman in the Semifinals by 21. BOD won the 3rd place game over Mount Si. Coach Richie had his players playing hard all weekend and it
turned out to be a great weekend for BOD.

After a big win on Friday for Weston Ranch, they fell short in their next 3 games against top tier competition and finished 1-3.

Mitty finished the event 2-2 with their other win over Rancho Christian and their losses to Coronado who finished 2nd in the Bracket and Trinity International with top 25 player Daishon Nix. The top 2 brackets were won by Windward over Coronado and Bishop Gorman over Mater Dei. All Bracket Champions are listed below.

Vanden went 4-0 and won their bracket. Coach Holloway did an outstanding job with his team all weekend.

General consensus was it was much different than an April or July AAU event, but coaches liked it better for the most part.

CDS Insurance Bracket - Riverside Poly CA

Sad that CA didn't do the live event in June. Only 18 states I heard of 50 did the high school event in June. 2020 kids got screwed. Good showing for Northern Cali in Arizona. Saw a lot of kids picked up additional offers.

I have thought about that too and the amount of NorCal players who didn't get the D1 eyeballs this weekend. It would be nice to see California have events like this and make it easier for more teams to play.

On the other side, I thought Ronnie Flores brought up a good point in the linked story. If CA for example does events like this, it will dillute the overall talent pool for each event and take away how good the AZ was this past weekend - http://ballislife.com/section-7-a-success-for-gorman-college-coaches/

In the end, I'm for as many kids getting quality looks, but it is an interesting counter point to consider.

The real question is how many D1 coaches went to other gyms to watch teams that didnt have top 150 players...Players or programs spent thousands of $ particpate. Cost versus reward.

Nice recap. CA should do it next year and maybe having a rotating location on west coast. AZ, NV, CA. Something like that .

It seems after the first bracket or two it wasn’t that great. Can do something even better if CA hosted especially in SoCal.

Grant also played in this event finished 3-1 losing to Basha (AZ) by 7 in the Tom Kimball pool championship game.

vs. Mountain Ridge (AZ) 69 55
vs. Compton CA 66 55
vs. Norte Dame (CA) 81 73
vs. Basha (AZ) 72 79

Unless CIF and NCAA have future discussion, wont happen in California. But i do expect more teams to travel next summer. And i bet more HS coaches will start to hustle for their kids, the d1 coaches will know their schedule and gym locations (if they arent already).

Think about the norcal teams that went, those coaches and certain players are well connected in the aau scene. Others will have to catch up.

CIF was actually at the event and are having discussions about having a similar event in Cali. next summer.

To be honest Northern Cali high school coaches dropped the ball on their 2020 players. There is a live event they had the opportunity to send players to this upcoming weekend in Washington State.Or at least nominate them for the opportunity. 5 Northern Cali kids I saw on the list. 2 from Western Ranch, 1 from Berkeley, 1 from Dublin and the other Folsom High. It is unfortunate kids in the class of 2020 are the trial and error of this new system.
It just dawned on me that that all the kids going have public school coaches.
