It was a good weekend for a number of NorCal teams in Arizona.
The event was hosted by Section 7 and they did an incredible job. Although, the event was spread out over several high schools, headquarters was located at Brophy Prep with Central High located next door. Most of the top teams and prospects played at Brophy Prep and Central on Friday night and throughout the weekend. Some of the top teams included Mater Dei, Corona Centennial, Rancho Christian, Damien, Etiwanda, Rolling Hills Prep, Windward, Bishop Gorman and Coronado out of Las Vegas, Mount Si and Eastside Catholic out of Washington along with Norcal’s Archbishop Mitty, Bishop O’Dowd, Campolindo, Weston Ranch, Modesto Christian, Vanden and several other teams out of Norcal making the long trip for the chance to play in front of a few hundred college coaches as well as great competition.
On Friday, Mitty pulled out a tough win over San Diego power Torrey Pines. Weston Ranch also had a big win on Friday over SoCal power Bishop Montgomery. Bishop O’Dowd won big in their opening game over Rangeview of Colorado. Modesto Christian, who was short handed, fell behind by double digits in the first half of their opening bracket game against Mount Si. What looked to be a potential blow out by Mount Si ended up being a gritty fought game by MC to come all the way back and tie up the game late in the 2nd half. MC eventually fell short and lost to a very talented Mount Si team with at least 3 D1 players on their roster including their 6’5 point guard Jabe Mullens. Modesto Christian
dropped their first 3 games before landing a win in their final game on Sunday.
Bishop O’Dowd won their first 2 games before losing to Bishop Gorman in the Semifinals by 21. BOD won the 3rd place game over Mount Si. Coach Richie had his players playing hard all weekend and it
turned out to be a great weekend for BOD.
After a big win on Friday for Weston Ranch, they fell short in their next 3 games against top tier competition and finished 1-3.
Mitty finished the event 2-2 with their other win over Rancho Christian and their losses to Coronado who finished 2nd in the Bracket and Trinity International with top 25 player Daishon Nix. The top 2 brackets were won by Windward over Coronado and Bishop Gorman over Mater Dei. All Bracket Champions are listed below.
Vanden went 4-0 and won their bracket. Coach Holloway did an outstanding job with his team all weekend.
General consensus was it was much different than an April or July AAU event, but coaches liked it better for the most part.
