Serra vs. St. Francis

Surprised not a lot of traction on the board about this game. Could be Serra's toughest game until the playoffs. Serra has historically had a hard time winning at St. Francis. St. Francis's physicality vs Serra's athleticism. ??? If St. Francis can run the ball and manage the click like they did last year in game one they have a chance to pull the upset. Not sure if Serra is 100 percent healthy, but I will go with Serra 31-St. Francis 17

Good point. It’s been a DLS Folsom heavy week. Funny how Serra beat them both and as you said not a blip on this game. All I know if DLS knocks off Folsom tonight, this board is gonna blow up. And we may have to hear about the big competitive games in the Trinity as well.

An examination of the roster and an in-person look does confirm that Serra does have more than its share of big, mobile linemen and linebackers. They should be able to go toe to toe with St. Francis tonight.

I'm not too excited about most Serra games going forward... In the past, Valley Christian and St. Francis were the main contenders for an upset. This year, VC is a shadow of its normal self. And St. Francis is below the level of a genuine threat. This may the first year for a perfect Serra season ever. But if there is an upset on the Serra horizon, I think it may come from an unexpected source.

This is a good game to look at how much home field advantage impacts high school games. Because based on how these teams have looked, Serra should be a healthy favorite. But playing at St. Francis made me take a short pause before keeping Serra high on my pick'em

Serra does have two unbeaten seasons: 8-0 in 1949 and 9-0 in 1954. But 10-0 has never been done on West 20th Avenue. The 1968 team came close, with a 9-1 mark, a one-point loss to Vallejo marring a drive for perfection. This year, there is one obvious potential glitch that could intrude: Teen over-confidence. That No.1 NorCal rating can become a burden. To be honest, Central Catholic did not have a lot of trouble scoring on the Padres two weeks ago. A better pass defense by the Modesto visitors might have altered the final result.

I'll go with the Lancers in an upset. Serra going through their early season gauntlet can either show how really good this team is by beating every single team in front of them or being a team that may have used all their bullets beating all those giants and not being able to answer the bell one more time. Should be a really good game regardless.
