It was really the Jamar Williams-Sheppard Show tonight at Kezar. He had at least 30 carries and 150 yards, plus an 85-yard Pick-Six on defense to top things off. I think they over-use him. All the other teams have to do is key on him as they did last year and that won't translate into a lot of wins if the coaching staff doesn't mix-up their playbook with something other than "Jamar up the middle".

Quarterback George Stefko attempted ONE pass that overthrew the receiver, but he did send it 52 yards which shows some arm strength. He also had a 16-yard run and a touchdown in the first quarter. The second QB, Rafael Suchikul also had one incomplete pass.

The defense looked good at pursuing the quarterback and had at least three sacks. Tigers are still pass-happy and they had a lot of open looks.

Sophomores Jamal Lavillier and A'reon Mitchell were impressive with both their speed and athleticism. Laviellier had two 10-yard runs. Mitchell would be a good receiver if the coach would pass more often, and on defense, he had an interception as a free safety.

Irish are 56-39-7 for season openers.

SHC JV's won 28-0. QB Andres Ruiz looked good. He had runs of 40 yards and 14 yards before he went out with what looked like an ankle injury. He was on the bench late in the second quarter with ice on his knee and ankle.

so what you are saying is the Irish have same formula as last year, minus a proven passer. So SHC will have early success until league when opponents will stack line and let anybody but Sheppard beat them. O.K. the scouting report on SHC is done. Next opponent.

Sure looks that way. I don't see what's stopping them from mixing it up with a passing game. You don't need Montana and Rice-caliber players to complete a pass.

Actually, Stefko threw two passes. The second one bounced of Mitchell's hands on a bubble screen and was intercepted. Stefko had to make the tackle and hurt his shoulder. He played the next series but they came out and was out for the game. This was early in the 2nd quarter. And it was 14 - 0 at that point. Luckily, I hear the injury is not as serious as feared.

The Irish offense was rolling up until that point. The play calling became very conservative after that point with the backup in.

Tough night on quarterbacks last night at Kezar. Andy Ruis, the jv qb was having a monster game with nearly 100 yards rushing when he hurt his knee early in the 2nd quarter and was knocked out of the game. Luckily, the word is that it is is not serious. Then in the 3rd quarter, the Terra Nova JV qb was knocked out of the game. He had a great arm and his last name was Gordon. (Don't know if he is the brother of the Gordon who was TN's star qb last year now starting at City). Finally, Stefko. Three starting qb's.

I do remember that second pass now. Good that Ruiz' injury isn't serious. He was on the bench the rest of the game with ice on his knee and ankle. Looks like TN was running a pass play that CCSF runs. Pack three receivers on one end, throw the ball and whoever's open grabs it.

Sounds like the Irish had this game in hand...was hoping to see that the Irish soph, Levallier, would get more carries as I have been hearing good things about him...

Lavallier did play well. He had a couple of 10-yard runs, an 8-yard run and a 22-yard run. He also ran one kick-off back 42 yards. You'd never guess he's first-year varsity. Ae'reon Mitchell will be a good receiver as soon as the Irish get their passing game going (i.e., get Ronan Murphy back). The QB George Stefko went down with an injury but he'll be back. They really have no back-up after him. Mitchell also plays defense and picked-off a pass as a safety (although there was a flag on the play) and he almost picked another one off. He also had a shot at a 50-yard TD pass but it was over-thrown.The other soph is a lineman.

I think the coach is grooming Andres Ruiz to be QB for next season as he started on the JV's and ran the ball well until he got injured early in the game. He was on the bench the rest of the game with ice packs on his left knee and ankle.

Cheers

Ar'eon did have an interception in the second quarter in the series after the pass that went off his hands.

A 4th sophomore AJ Alston No 48 is also playing varsity. The Irish were playing short handed at mlb with Murphy and Salazar out.

Irish Cheers conveniently left out that Terra Nova was without their potential CCS POY running back.

Wasn't the other qb, Ruiz, injured last week, too? Is he ok to start this week?

Rafael Suchikul, a junior is the backup. Ruiz, a sophomore, was the starting jv qb. Waiting to hear on him. Would not be surprised if they brought him up once he is healthy.

At the last game, he spent the rest of the game on the bench with ice on his left knee and ankle. I hope he's not on crutches come Friday.

Would be an interesting wrinkle if Peralta used Williams-Sheppard, Murphy and Lavallier as rbs in the double wing....

Yes it would be, they have senior RB Jay Na too who has speed as well. Problem is most of these players already go both ways on offense and defense...so it is quite a balancing act for the SHC coaches. I surmise it is a work in progress and the coaching staff will be trying lots of new things for offensive production. I don't see much passing until we see how Murphy is holding up, out till end of Sept, last years' leading receiver.

That wouldn't be a bad idea either. In any event, they'll have to use some imagination on offense without a proven passer and receiver. Maybe Rafael Suchikul will surprise.

Frosh team has 48 players this season. They beat College Park 38-20. First team sat-out the second half.

JV quarterback Ruiz is in crutches and has a cast on his left leg. I can't believe we lost both QBs for the year with no back-ups.
