SJS D1

SMS #3 seed...

does anyone know when the last time in SJS section history that SMS was a 3 seed or lower??? 10? 15? 20yrs?

SMS sustained level of greatness has been amazing! What a run.

SMS as a 3 seed? Still hard to comprehend even though you could read the writing on the wall.. I still had to see it to believe it.

Now Coach G can use the "they dont respect us" and the "no one believes we can do it" line (like the NE Patriots) for psychological manipulation on the young SMS minds...lol

SJS D1 looks like an awesome and wide open section and should be fun to watch the results.

I see some very interesting 2nd round possible matchups here! As CoachDViks suggested, I agree that there could be some upsets here. And big upsets of possibly the top 4 seeds.
Possible matchups of:
McClatchy vs Lincoln-Stockton could be very good rematch of earlier in season. After just going into st Mary’s for the upset win, Lincoln will have lots of confidence going into playoffs. With their two 6 footers and steady point guard Low, if they are able to handle McClatchys pressure defense, could cause problems.
St Mary’s vs CO could be another interesting matchup. I could definitely see CO matching up with well with them. Very smart team, good ball handlers, good shooters, tough defense. If St Mary’s doesn’t shoot well from outside, could be same result as Lincoln game the other night.
Folsom vs Oak Ridge-wow, this is tough draw for Folsom. Obviously home court advantage helps. But just taking the loss to them last night, and then possibly playing them again on Thursday! Wow, so excited to see how it all plays out! Good luck to all the teams and hopefully everyone is able to stay healthy!

If the seeds hold in D-2, it would seem to me that SJS is going to get three teams in NorCal Open, as both Antelope and Sacramento are very strong candidates. And if SMS advances to the finals and loses, they too are a strong candidate for a NorCal Open berth.

By the same token, NCS also has strong teams, though Salesian's loss to SPSV might change the equation slightly. If Carondelet loses to Heritage in the D-1 finals, is Carondelet in the Open ahead of the loser of the SJS D-2 final or the loser of the SJS D-1 final? And if Cardinal Newman beats Salesian in the NCS D-3 final, do both go Open?

It would seem that the NCS division 1-3 winners are all Open, plus SJS D-1 and D-2, which means it comes down to one runner-up getting in. A case could be made for and against every team, it seems to me ...

That's what I said about SMS in an earlier post on a different SJS thread. If SMS makes the SJS finals (win or lose) they "should" be highly considered for the Open division.

Overall, the SJS seeding committee did a pretty good job this year on the girls side. The only complaint I have is keeping West Campus in D4, despite winning consecutive state titles the past two years in D4. They should be D3 this year, even though they are not as dominate and strong like previous years.

Possible SJS D1/D2 first-round upsets (based on seeding only--not on real "upset" definition).

SJS D1:
#10 Edison can upset #7 Lincoln
#9 Woodcreek vs. #8 Franklin-Elk Grove should be real close

SJS D2:
#10 Roseville WILL upset #7 Laguna Creek
#9 Vista del Lago can upset #8 Granite Bay

I agree cptmycpa, I think the SJS seeding committee actually did pretty good job this year compared to most other years. It is obvious they are very much relying on the MaxPreps rankings to do most of the seedings, which is pretty accurate this season. The only question mark I have is why did Folsom drop to 4 and McClatchy move up to 2. I think head to head has been a big influence in the past (last year McClatchy/Edison). IMO, Folsom should be ahead of McClatchy still, even with the 2 end of season losses. They were still league champion. And in their 2nd round matchup, they have to possibly play against Oak Ridge again? That is strange. But Oak Ridge did deserve the 5 seed as they have wins against CO and Lincoln. Maybe Oak Ride at home though might be better than having to play Lincoln, who just beat St Marys! I thought the top 4 seeds would have pretty good chance at advancing to semis pretty easily. But now I think there will be an upset or 2 in the 2nd round. Oak Ridge, CO and Lincoln will be pretty tough 2nd round opponents.

I think the reason why McClatchy got the "nod" for a better seeding than Folsom came to down two reasons. First, despite the head-to-head loss to Folsom, it came very early in the season (3rd game of season for Folsom; 4th game of season for McClatchy), over two months ago, and only a two-point loss--not a blowout. Second, after McClatchy's loss to Folsom, Folsom lost twice (not close games by final score) to two common opponents that McClatchy beat rather soundly in the same tournament (So. Cal. Holiday, San Diego). So factoring that in, plus Folsom losing their two last games of the season (despite winning league), did not give a very good impression in the eyes of the seeding committee. The icing on the cake was the final MaxPreps ranking having McClatchy ahead or tied with Folsom.

I guess time to put up or shut up now! This season has been rather interesting with all the different upsets all over the place. Only team that hasnt lost to another NorCal team seems to be Mitty. The parity with all the teams this year is actually a fun thing to see. I've always been a fan of the underdog, so this year I am expecting some surprise upsets by many lower seeded teams. Good luck to everyone and hope all the teams stay healthy. Looking forward to seeing some great games this year! And get to go to Golden 1 to watch all the Division finals, doesnt get better than that!
