I can't blame the kids all like that. Its the damn adults.
I coach football. A few years ago when I was out of it I was approached by a friend who had a friend looking for coaches. The man had a really impressive resume including collegiate coaching experience. The opportunity was really too good to be true or to pass up but sure enough the guy wasn't playing around.
The last thing the guy told me on the phone was "I'm going to need your help getting out in the community, getting people engaged in our program, talking to kids and setting up housing and things for them."
I instantly thought "recruiting" and the conversation ended with a disagreement but the door still open.
I passed it up.
3 years later I'm back at it and the man who once asked for my help is now in the same league. The kids he has on his team do not fit the demographics of the neighborhood he coaches in or the school.
I look at it and at the end of the day I know the kids aren't finding him. He hadn't coached in ages due to health reasons, he's finding them.
Additionally, teenage boys have very little say over what they do
