Rmbr, I assuming your father must have played right after my dad. The star running back on my dads' team in 1943 and 1944 was Dick Olmo.Great stuff Rikfran! My father went to Balboa in the mid-1940’s and was a 2-time All City RB and is in the Balboa Sports Hall of Fame.
At least it's an Irish name...It would be great to prove them wrong, IC? Ha, Im still waiting for FUBO to pipe in or say something completely off the top, is he MIA where has he been? Riordan got a nice principal maybe they can change the way Riordan is spelled now..
SI will not finish 4th this year, unrest and turmoil on 37th avenue. They only have bodies, a few good plsyrs, but mostly bodied.Cal Preps is picking SI to finish 4th.

Hi Scott
Rabbit5, Calispectator, Churbro1996, who do you see as the Crusader qb for this season? Your assessment of the team? Many more really good additions to the team via last years JV team ( not a good team, but had some good players) of which at least two will start and play on both sides of the ball, as well as much needed depth on the line. Add Jelani Clark at receiver and now the Crusaders have weapons.
The Crusaders are beginning to believe in themselves and that could mean trouble for their opponents.
Pre-season will be a good indicator after the first game. Clovis East won't be much of a challenge.SI will not finish 4th this year, unrest and turmoil on 37th avenue. They only have bodies, a few good playrs, but mostly bodies.
[QUOTE="jordan24, post: 168568, member: 140"]Add both Mezie brothers with Clark and you have a promising receiving group Is last season's soph Marcus Williams back, too? Deal breaker is a QB who cannot get them the ball.

2017 St. Ignatius Wildcats
Can S.I. turn it around after back to back losing season’s?
Has football become a mere after-thought on the S.I. campus? S.I. seems to have settled comfortably into the lower 3rd tier of the WCAL.[/.
Next Up: Mitty Monarch’s

Rikfran, somewhere we are off by a year or ? I believe my father played '43-44 and just found the roster for the '44 championship game with him in it, but no Dick Olmo. I think I remember seeing Dick Olmo's name before and will have to ask dad or look through his memorabilia [his memory is still really good - will let you know]. Also no Balboa Sports Hall of Fame on their school website - unable to find anywhere.

Rmbr. I am not sure what year Olmo graduated since I only have 43 season articles. I assumed he was in my dads class because after the war, he and my dad rode up to Stockton on back of Olmo's Harley motorcycle for open tryouts at Pacific. The coach that season was Alonzo Stagg. From the all league list, there were two other backs from Balboa who were on the list. Tom Dillon was 2nd team along with Olmo, and Vern Scherba was 3rd team. I am assume one of those two is your dad.
Don't forget about Nicholas millburn from the jvs kid ran a 11.2 in track and 40The QB will be the sophomore, not the senior, the sophomore is a natural QB with a better arm. The senior is versatile and gives the team more depth at every skill position. The fact the sophomore missed some summer practices due to an injury puts him presently as the backup, but that will change shortly.
Playmakers on both sides of the ball is the strength of this team. Very good senior leadership along with 4 sophomores who will get playing time as well prime time roles for two way players from their junior class.
Line play is the key here, if coach Morris and Jones can get this unit to perform, I see as much as 4 wins, 5 is not out of the question.
Next weeks scrimmage at Miramonte answers all the questions.
It took a lot more than 20,000 folks to fill the old Kezar Stadium. In 1928, for example, 50,000 attended the Lowell vs. Polytechnic contest, according to the AAA history books. But not to worry. Very few of us were at that particular ballgame. So memories are necessarily dim.
The papers did give write-ups to some girls sports. During my research for SHC, I came across an article about how good Polytechnic's girls basketball team was in 1905. Pictures included. There was also an 1897 article about the Stanford women playing the girls from Oakland HS. Men weren't allowed into the game except for the team doctor. The refs and scorekeepers were all women. They even had a banquet later.SF had five thriving dailies back in the day. And they covered prep sports (all boys, of course) like they were colleges. There were no major pro teams in SF back then, although the old Seals were considered big-time. But that was about it.
Rmbr, all I can say is wow. We have a connection. Would love to get together with you and your dad. Unfortunately, my dad passed in 2002. Contact me at rikfran@comcast.net if interested.
Impressive academic achievements ColHenry. But I gotta give it up to the young men on Phelan Ave and their academic achievements...as these are young men of color growing up in some of the most dangerous and disadvantaged areas of SF. rising up early, taking the bus, going to practice, staying late to finish their class assignments and then taking the late night bus home. Several of these young men are pulling 4.0 GPAs as they know athletics are not the end all be all...These kids may not always win on the field, but they are winning in life.Another Bellarmine note: When it comes to academics, it's doubtful that any other WCAL school matches up with the College Park crowd. Just check the complete list of 2017 National Merit Scholars. Very impressive. Maybe those guys can't block and tackle or run a 9.9 hundred, but, mercy, they do know their Jesuit ABC's.

I don't get it. SI is clearly weaker than last season. MaxPreps has them ranked above Bellarmine. Expect that to change soon.I think its time for some new computers for Freeman's-CalPreps rating system OR the person inputting the data is smoking something.
Unless S.I. bolsters that roster upwards of 50 players and some new talent emerges the Wildcats most definitely are not going to finish anywhere close to 4th in WCAL without a minor miracle [lots of Our Fathers & plenty of Hail Mary's]..
SI remains a very well coached and conditioned team, though their talent seems to have dropped with the exception of the jr. lineman. Add to their always challenging non-league - they will be prepared for WCAL play.

But do they have more able bodies than the Phelan Ave. boys? LolOur Crusaders take down SI this year jordan24, they have bodies over there, only bodies.
