It is terrible. There is no reason at all for this.

This isn't 1962, when the (in)famous pitching duel between Warren Spahn and Juan Marichal took place with both pitchers going the distance in a 16 inning affair. I don't know if anyone was counting pitches back then, but Marichal threw 16 innings and Spahn 15 1/3 before finally surrendering a run.

I heard about some local kid throwing 145 or so pitches maybe 5 or 6 years ago, and people were ready to string up the coach at that time. Much more attention has been focussed on pitch count in recent years, so much so that a pitcher throwing 194 in 2014 at any level is just unfathomable. The only logical explanation I can think of is if this was the kids last game he was ever going to pitch, and had no aspirations or hope of ever pitching again at any level and wanted to stay in the game regardless of the wear and tear on his arm.

UPDATE

Tommy John - the real one called out the Rochester HS HC by name and said he should lose his job.

I found it sickening when the only thing the HC told reporters was: "I checked with him each inning to see how he was"
