Tough story at El Cerrito

Good news. Brian Nichols has taken over the reigns this year as the head coach at Dougherty Valley HS.

Nichols played ball with and against my brother (when they were both in the old RBAL) on Larry Quirico's summer team. Sveum from PV was in the mix with them at the time. Those teams LQ (then at EC, then DVC and CCC- who now has Brian Guinn at the helm) put together were very talented. Quirico essentially inherited Berkeley's and West County's best talent for summer when Emery Phillips stepped down from a forever career at that and as a Richmond Oiler. (His three boys were pretty darn good too.) Nichols was a "fierce competitor" (read between the lines) my brother would say, but if you wanted to be D1, that's what it took. He was a dang good C at EC but made his mark at USC on the bump.

That's good he's landed on his feet. Most guys given the "resign or termination" option take the former, as it reflects less on their personnel file and subsequent positions if an educator. As his style, he refused to resign. DoV is getting a very knowledgeable guy. We shall see how they stack up in the new EBAL with really strong programs throughout that league. Even Granada and Livermore get some good teams some years.
