For longtime observers of WCAL baseball, the 2017 season has to be one of the wildest ever. And that's going back 50 years. With one week left in the regular season, five teams (Bellarmine, SHC, Serra, St. Francis and VC) have four losses each at the top of the league (VC has a tie as well). Nothing is even close to being settled at this point. And that includes seeding for the upcoming WCAL tourney. Only three teams are out of the title picture: Riordan, SI and Mitty. The rest are very much in the mix.

Across the region has been more unpredictable than usual too. It seems no team can gain any traction. Lack of pitching depth?

Pitching depth (especially with all of the prior rainouts that compact the season and force more games per week later on) can be a problem. Also, overall talent may be more spread out this year, making it harder to create a truly dominant team.

For supporters of the three San Francisco members of the WCAL, it's worth noting that SHC's current run at the 2017 league baseball title is significant. If the Irish manage to win or share the WCAL crown this year, it would break a 16-year stranglehold by the league's five southern schools. In fact, over the 50-year history of the league, a city school has won or shared the varsity baseball championship only five times, the last coming in 2000 by SI, according to the WCAL website.

WCAL has been exciting this year curious to see how the 2018 season will go. Serra has a lot of talent in their Jr and sophomore classes the sophomore RHP seems to be the real deal. Bell's JV has a good pitching and solid all around. St Francis has some injured sophomores and Jrs plus the freshmen SS and the RHP will be names to follow. SHC Jr class is very strong and young pitchers. Mitty also good JV players and some good freshmen. I can't wait to see how this season ends but looking forward to next year.
