I had not coached hs ball in Nor Cal since spring of 2019. I came back as an assistant this year. I was coaching a varsity game tonight (boys) and the ref called a 5 second closely guarded call on our player resulting in a turnover to the opponent.

I was a bit dumbfounded. I thought that call was eliminated in CIF in California 4-5 years ago, but the ref insisted I did not know what I was talking about.

Can someone tell me who is correct?

The referee is correct. Can be 5 second count closely guarded while either dribbling or holding ball. New count starts when offensive player transitions from holding the ball to dribbling or vice versa. In theory you could hold for 4 seconds, dribble for 4 seconds and then hold again for 4 seconds and not violate. Girls closely guarded only pertains to a held ball scenario, not while dribbling.

Imagine you take away not only the shot clock, but the 5 second rule as well.

Literally all games would be ending 10-9......11-10 max!

Here’s the trick question…Let’s say a ball handler is dribbling and the count has started. He comes off a ball screen and a different defender switches on to the ball handler now within the 6 foot distance. Does the 5 second count start over? Or does the 5 second count continue from pervious defender?

While we're on trick questions- do closely guarded counts apply while the ball is being brought up the floor in the backcourt? Girls- Boys

In Boys there is a 10 second backcourt count. The five second count only applies in front court. In Girls there is no ten second back court however there is a five second count while holding the ball in front and back court. For California we have a 35 second shot clock for boys and a 30 second shot for girls so no 10-9 scores.

Things that make you say hmm, how can 6 ft be considered social distancing from someone with a virus and closely guarding someone with a basketball? Good luck getting a count from 6 ft away.

Coach- You are correct - In the "real world" the count is not going to be happening at the 6 foot distance.
