Due to the challenges caused by the pandemic, the first six months of 2021 ought to be an opportunity for CIF to permit each of the 10 sections to handle their competitive athletic offerings/seasons in their own separate fashions. Without playoffs, why not? The disease is not striking each section and county with the same ferocity. Just this once, it would make sense to allow the varying parts of this vast state to handle their prep sports business on their own.

The latest state guidelines could not be more clear: Even in the most restrictive pandemic purple tier, competitive prep sports can still be played (all of them outdoors). They are: Cross-country, golf, swimming and diving, tennis and track and field. What's the holdup? Why wait? Give the individual sections the go-ahead to act on their own. Give at least some young athletes a shot at competing in January. Why is this so difficult? A Peninsula high school swimming pool this morning at 9 a.m. was busy with more than a dozen people getting in their workouts under supervision. Next door on the school's all-weather track, more folks were running and walking. In an adjacent park, dozens of women were taking part in outdoor fitness classes. What more proof do we need?

Agreed, in my opinion CIF should start re-working the sports calendar for this year. The sports that can go under the Purple Tier should be cleared to go as soon as the stay at home order is lifted. It may be a county by county or district by district approach, but if the sport is cleared under the county's current tier let them compete. As a basketball coach I know it could be a long way off before we are cleared, but some of my athletes compete in other sports that would be cleared under the Purple Tier and I know they want to compete. If my basketball players compete in track or cross-country that could actually help them be in better condition once basketball season is cleared. Again, just my thoughts.
