How many times has Archbishop Riordan played in a Sectional Final. I know they have won now 15 titles, I think they have made the final game 19 times, they are the all time leader in section championship's! A proud tradition continues!

I’m a big supporter of the WCAL but bingobob needs to pump the breaks a little bit. Riordan’s proud tradition ended with Isola. If you consider finishing in the bottom half of league, going into the weakest division often times with a sub .500 record and beating some mediocre PAL team for a ccs title as adding to the Crusader’s storied legacy you don’t get it. Here’s a question for ARHS stats, has Riordan played in the open division yet? I’m guessing maybe once in six years.

If you're talking CCS - Yes. Riordan played in the Open Division the first 3 years of its existence. If talking State Open Division. I only recall Mitty, St. Francis and Bellarmine playing in the Open. Both SF and Bellarmine took early exits with the Gordon Bros-led Mitty squads going to the finals and with Aaron's teams taking 2 State Titles.

Archbishop Riordan has played in 20 C.C.S. championship games.
Losing to Jefferson in 1982, St. Ignatius in Overtime in 1984, St. Francis in 1988 (beat SF in the 1989 championship game), Sacred Heart Cathedral in 2002 (Archbishop Riordan State Division 3 Champions in 2002), and St. Ignatius in 2007.

Archbishop Riordan played in the C.C.S OPEN Division in 2013, 2014, & 2015. The first 3 years of the C.C.S. OPEN Division.

Add Riordan defeating Serra in 1994 for D1 CCS Title played at SJ State.

Serra and Mitty are the only two teams that have been in the CCS Open every year. Serra has also been in the state open twice- Henry Caruso senior year they lost to Sheldon and then 3 years ago with Wohrer and I can't think of the tall post they had, they crushed Moreau and loss a tight semi final game to Modesto who had the 6'11 kid and 6"8 kid who I believe is playing at UOP. O'dowd ended up winning the entire thing

That was a list of teams, Riordan lost to in Championship Games.

Serra would be on the list of 11 different schools, Riordan has defeated in Championship games, a couple of the schools have been defeated more than once in championship games.

Here is the list of teams Archbishop Riordan has defeated in C.C.S. Championship Games:
Woodside in 1973, Oak Grove in 1974, Fremont (S) in 1980, Saint Francis in 1985, Pioneer in 1986, Saint Francis in 1989, Serra in 1990, Serra in 1994, Capuchino in 1998 (D 3), San Mateo in 1999 (D 3), Sacred Heart Cathedral in 2001 (D 3), Seaside in 2006 (D 3), Sacred Heart Cathedral in 2008 (D 3), Sacred Heart Cathedral in 2016 (D 3), and Monterey in 2018 (D 3).

From 1998 to 2012, Archbishop Riordan had to play in it's enrollment division for the Playoffs.
Archbishop Riordan played in the OPEN Division in 2013, 2014, and 2015.

Dwayne Fontana is not walking through that door. Jaha Wilson is not walking through that door. And Kevin Restani is not walking through that door...

Those teams were beasting in the 90's. Then the Vince Smith & Rashaad Lowry years through 95'.

Dorian Manigo was that guy. I watched the Riordan Vs. Mater Dei game on Channel 36 in 1990 when the game was played at the Oakland Coliseum. MD won 62-60. Dorian had an off game. Fontana, Buck and Co. played their hearts out that night and was 2 points away from being the Div 1 State Champions. Rich Buckner gave his heart for his school as a student athlete and coach. He should always be given high praise.

Question for all of the ARHS alums/supporters. Would you rather go back to the old system where you would have a legitimate shot at a state championship in D3 (and probably a high seed, and home games for the first few rounds).

Or do you prefer the current system, where you get the "prestige" of playing for a D2 title. And a low, #13 seed, and a first round road game (against a very good SPSV team)....and very probably a one and done Norcal's?

I think the current system is great for the Open division, and D1, but I'm not seeing the benefits to the lower divisions. JM2C

If Riordan got the players they did in the 70s and 80s, then the way it is currently. Schools now are very top heavy/loaded with D1 prospects year after year (more so in the Southern California schools, i.e. Bishop Montgomery, Mater Dei, Sierra Canyon) Its amazing how a public school like Westchester comes back every single year as one of the top teams given private schools can pilfer their talent whenever they want.

I'd prefer Riordan play in their natural D3 and make a strong run there, because unless you are one of the basketball factory schools, it is unlikely they will win an Open championship under the current format.

Well you dont know who is walking thru that door. Riordans program is on an Uptick. It goesnin cycles. For example. Sacred Heart has never really had any long standing bball success until the mid 2000s. With Coach P and then Barbour.

That's when they started getting players. And there program tool an Uptick. As far as divisions go. Win a championship first at any level. Then worry about moving up division's...it doesn't matter what division you play at now. Today. Everyone has players. Especially in LA. At all divisions. Baron Davis led Crossroads to a D4 school at the time to a state title. Get in where you fit in...

RIORDAN should play there enrollment first. That would be best...

I say play one big March Madness tournament. Seed them 1-64 whatever in the North and the same in the South. Winners play for the State Title.
