Has anyone else heard the report that the WCAL is considering a new "B" league for football. It supposedly would include Riordan, SHC, Menlo School, The King's Academy, SHP and at least one other private school. The "A" league would include SI, Serra and the four WCAL schools in Santa Clara County. The PAL, where SHP, Menlo and TKA now reside for football, reportedly is promoting the plan as well. This idea does not sound far-fetched at all. Finding a sixth school for the "B" league might be a problem, however.

Or the Marginally Catholic Athletic League.

Or the Partly Papal Athletic League.

Take a North School since SI takes the majority of them now....Cardinal Newman ,Marin Catholic, Justin Sienna would fit in

The proposal is being discussed. All of the coaches are aware of it. How far it will get remains to be seen. But it would solve a number of issues in both the WCAL and the PAL.

PAL gets rid of those pesky privates. Good for them. But PAL ends up with 15 teams...three leagues with 5 teams in each. If they cannot recruit more teams to the PAL then each of their coaches has to schedule 6 non-league games per season. That would not be easy. Plus by eliminating the three privates, the PAL likely ends up hurting their LCI...and over a few years could find themselves as two B leagues and one C league.

Plus the three privates better look into the fine print of the proposed changes to the CCS play-off format. If a B league team can opt into the bowl eligible divisions simply based on power points, then there probably isn't much of a risk. But suppose CCS puts other criteria on an opt up...for example you have to have the power points plus you have to have won your league in order to opt up. SHP, Menlo and even TKA might find that they can't opt up since they might miss out on a CCS opt up criteria.

In any case, we should see fairly soon how this will work out. CIF is suposed to vote in January on the new regional format. Then CCS will have to nail down their approach to the play-offs and the details of how CCS is going to decide which of the 6 A level teams fills 5 "sectional champion" spots, how opt up will work and any number of other details.

As for the PAL, it probably would result in two divisions, one strong, the other not so much, of 8 and 7 schools.

I believe that Newman, Marin Catholic, and Justin enrolments are roughly 600-700. Do not think they would be able to keep up year in year out with the larger schools, nor does it make sense for them.

Wow! What a post...Yes I do believe the WCAL is a "B" league...I've been saying it for years. Their best team lost consecutively twice to the SJS second best teams GB vs SI 2012 and Serra vs Del Oro 2013. I would have liked to have seen SHP vs Folsom this year. I think most honest HS football critics would have given Folsom a 50 pt spread.
