Folsom 2021 quarterback Ari Patu has picked up an offer from Stanford. It is the first quarterback offer for the Cardinal in this class.

And he has yet to start a game at Folsom? If the season is scrapped this year due to Coronavirus, then he should be very healthy but not very experienced before heading to The Farm.

That is not currently the case, as FBS football is considered a headcount sport and the 85 scholarships can’t be divided up. Most other sports like baseball have scholarships divided up into partials.

I know several guys who played at Stanford on partials...

You’re wrong in this one

NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS)
How many schools: There are 120 schools competing in the FBS (formerly Division I-A), the highest level in the collegiate ranks. This includes the big programs like Michigan, Ohio State, LSU, USC and Notre Dame.

Scholarship count: FBS programs are allowed 85 scholarships on its roster at any given time, and generally can sign up to 25 players per year.

Scholarship breakdown: All 85 scholarships are full rides. There are no partial scholarships given in FBS football.

NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (FCS)
How Many Schools: There are 125 schools competing in the FCS (formerly Division I-AA) in 2008. This includes all of the Ivy League schools and FCS powers like Appalachian State, Georgia Southern and Northern Iowa.

Scholarship Count: FCS schools have 63 scholarships to be distributed, and up to 30 incoming players each year can be given aid.

Scholarship Breakdown: Scholarships at FCS schools can be full or partial rides. The 63 grants can be divided up in any way, but no more than 85 players can be put on scholarship.

Anyone could most definitely be on a “partial scholarship” at any school, but as some have mentioned if it’s at an FBS football school that partial scholarship would not be an athletic scholarship. FBS football athletic scholarships are always full scholarships. Perhaps they had a partial academic scholarship, some other merit based scholarship, or otherwise?

It has been some years ago....things may have changed....I could very well be wrong.... and the two guys were EXCELLENT students! I know for a fact the scholarship was partial, both played football....very well could have been academic and I didn't pay close enough attention.
