Azusa Pacific, a SoCal small college, has announced it is dropping football after 55 years of competition.

Covid strikes again. APU was the last D2 program left in the state and had huge support locally. Such a shame....

Finances more than covid. having to fly to so many games cost alot of money for a small private school.

No way the program gets canceled if they are actually playing a season. Same with Occidental.

So like many a things I think this was an easy way out. 1 season shouldnt break them if they were doing as good as you say. They do not generate that much money and damn near every school outside of power 5 loses money on football. So I think this was the nail in the coffin and a excuse to close up.

Damn another option for kids to play on further gone. All the CSU’s (SF, Hayward, SSU, LB, Chico etc) and privates SC, St. Mary’s, Menlo, UOP were landing spots for a lot of guys who were not P5, but good players when I was growing up.

And let's remember that there was a much different (pre-TV) era for college football when schools like Santa Clara and St. Mary's were actually national powers. Even USF went unbeaten in 1951, although the Dons were never a consistent big dog on the national level.

OL Charlie Reynolds from Cal High just verbally committed to Azusa Pacific a couple weeks ago. He had other offers, Cal Poly, Davis and Dartmouth. However , since guys are now signing their letters of intent, I don't know if any of the other offers are valid anymore?

Oddly I live right around the corner and I have never seen anyone entering or exiting the building. I did not even think it was still open.

Just you wait til that juggernaut starts up and it’s Friday night lights and they pack that on campus stadium (do they have one?) and it will feel like the Bjg House.
