I think most veteran coaches would agree that it takes a couple years to really figure out this head coaching thing -- there's a lot of stuff that you can't realize, even as an assistant.

I know for me, even after many years as an assistant, I made a lot of mistakes my first couple years (and still do, for that matter, but fewer, hopefully). But when I got to Bentley back in 2002, the team wasn't very good, there was no pressure, and I got to learn in a situation where every move wasn't scrutinized by parents and administration.

Bentley is in a similar situation again in the 2016-17 season, graduating five senior starters. There are some promising younger players, and the Bentley middle school rising eighth graders are pretty good, but this year -- and the job -- is perfect for a young coach who wants to start figuring out how to be a successful head coach without starting with a lot of pressure to be excellent.
