What are the best game day/night enviroments in NorCal?

A few that have stood out to me:

Del Oro (especially under Casey Taylor)
Valley Christian (hard to beat the hilltop)
Nevada Union (under Dave Humphers)
Oakdale
Paradise

Kezar Stadium (Historic venue on real grass! Turkey Day AAA Championship and Bruce-Mahoney with SHC vs SI)
Serra (just for the PA announcer alone!)
St. Francis (nicest and largest on campus HS football stadium on the South Peninsula)

Valley Christian field on top of the hill overlooking San Jose night lights

Napa - Beautiful field.

Sacred Heart Prep = great field and incredibly beautiful Atherton / Menlo park area. School is just beautiful.

Sutter HS - just a great venue. Flag carrying on horses around on track around the field. Great barbecue and fans. Whole town at the games.

The Pit - Salinas - great for players since old style with tunnel entry and seats very close to field.

St Francis High Ron Calcagno Stadium - Nice facilities, atmosphere and

Palma/North Salinas Rabobank Field - nice field although expansive but great when replay camera working and excellent tri tip. Great when they have the swiss sausage sandwiches as well from king city. The best.

Dick Force Stadium Gonzales in the late 1970s - greatest swiss sausage sandwiches in America. Small town atmosphere where everyone comes to town.

Oakdale - I like the field and nice small town venue. Fans are great.

Owens Field (DLS) - some of the greatest games I have watched against the greatest competition. Love the store to pick up my yearly cap and barbecue is decent. Lots of knowledgeable fans and usually a Norcalpreps member reunion at the big games.

Los Gatos High - nice field when grass although long grass. Nice old school and field and beautiful area. Watches some great games there.

Sacred Heart Prep in Atherton. Centuries-old oak trees abound. Ancient mansion, circa 1900, still standing and in use by administration. Order of the Sacred Heart nuns' poignant graveyard within 100 yards of the football field. The word "bucolic" does not do the campus justice. School has had a football program for about 20 years. So what's new is surrounded by the old.

Have you been to a game at Pittsburg HS Streak?

Also in addition

Pacific Grove has a nice facilities in the trees w

Foothill Pleasanton is also very nice venue.

Napa Stadium shared by both Vintage and Napa high schools is another great venue! Add Central Catholic-Modesto, too.

Gonzales and King City have always had a great Friday night atmosphere. And I will agree with NorCal, about the Swiss Sausage Sandwich at either stadium is fantastic.

A clear Saturday afternoon (rare as both have lots of fog) at Carmel and RLS can make spectacular vistas.

Monterey has a beautiful (old) on campus stadium that overlooks the Pacific Ocean, still cement bleachers. But they play most of at MPC (JC)and that is a great venue as well.

Seaside has a refurbished stadium this year that looks great and Pájaro Valley has a brand new stadium, both waiting to host games.

Another one that is a great enviroment is Vacaville. Great community feel there on Friday nights

I like Carmel and RLS as well. Played football and watched games at both. It was always fun taking the bus ride on 17 mile drive and the school is nice. Carmel also has nice campus. Seaside with the new field (last time I drove by was under construction) will be nice. Very cold direct wind breeze at nights coming from the bay. Not the place of fair weather fans. Also always liked MPC.

gotta disagree with Foothill Pleasanton. The home stands are nice but the visiting stands are wretched. At 6’2” I had to stand on the top row to see over the players on the sidelines. Too bad they didn’t spend some of the $30k they spent on the video scoreboard to improve the visitors stands. Minus the scoreboard, Ernie Berger field at Cal High is a much nicer venue with the visitors stands almost as nice as the home side.

Back in 1975 and 1976 when I played at Branham in SJ the only school in our league, the old West Valley Athletic League that had lights was Los Gatos. Fun place to play, despite the fact we never beat Los Gatos, including 1976 when we won our league. That was back in the days when you played the same school every year for homecoming and the game was played on Thanksgiving day. We managed to win league on Thanksgiving day 1976 by beating Prospect with a field goal with a couple minutes remaining. There were at least 5,000 people with both stands full and lots of folks parked on the side of Meridian Ave watching through the cyclone fence. Our record was 7-2-1 that year. Anyone here old enough to remember that?

Butch Catalico bulit a great program at LG. His successor has kept them at a relatively high level although Wilcox, Milpitas have improved more recently. Lived in LG for about 11 years attending games from time to time and also Palma and LG had some great games in playoffs that usually went to the last minute. Some great restaurants across the street a couple blocks away. The athletes at LG high have a great training area with the hill and runs to Lexington resevoire and the hills (where several top Boston Marathon runners trained at least when I used to run it. Love LG - was in a band at the time and played music in a couple of clubs I could walk to from my home. Beat traveling to San Francisco to play a gig.

Memorial Stadium in Napa (Vintage and Napa High Schools) is the best high school stadium in Northern California. However, I was really fond of the OLD Memorial Stadium. It was a throwback double-sided concrete bunker of a stadium with really poor lighting and old quonset huts at the end of the field that were used as team rooms. In the 80's it had a mud pit that became a sand pit of a field before it was transformed in the 90's to one of the best kept grass fields in high school football. There were some fantastic games played there by both schools over the years. Even when both teams were down, The Big Game was a packed house.

My list is places I played at, or coached at the last 25yrs or so. Some are awesome stadiums, others are listed for the atmosphere, fan support or just cool features.

Nevada Union- Nothing beats the big trees and cold weather like N.U., BR, and Golden Sierra.
Grant
Bear River
Central Catholic
Jesuit
Golden Sierra
Oakdale
Placer
Del Oro
Rocklin
Lincoln of Stockton- Maybe the best HS championship venue in SJS I've been part of.
El Cerrito
Yuba- same as Rio Linda
Roseville
Moreau Catholic
American Canyon- Maybe the coolest campus.
St. Mary's
UoP
Rio Linda- Something cool about crossing the street with 50 guys all padded up and heading into that stadium.
Granite Bay

Lot of good ones here. Grant was a great place to take in a game when they had it rolling. Ameican Canyon has a really nice stadium/campus. Lincoln-Stockton is a good setup too

Nevada Union, Hooper Stadium: Hated losing there. But from the mid-80’s until around 2010 the atmosphere was unparalleled and scenery unmatched. Also a bit intimidating back in the day. As an opposing player and coach, hated hearing that damned horn sounded every time the Miners scored. Although as a fan, it’s pretty cool.

Colfax: Saw my first game there a couple seasons ago. It’s not Hooper Stadium, but has some similarities. Nice venue, cool scenery. Small town feel.

Placer: I haven’t seen the new field, but this venue has a lot of history. Lots of sloppy mud bowl games too. Awesome fans.

Grant Union: Like NU, it’s nowhere near what it used to be. But historically a tremendous place to watch a game. Great sight lines from the stands. Rowdy, passionate but mostly cool fans. Cool band and dancers. And for many decades, among the most talented teams in the area.

San Juan, MacArthur Field: This one is more of a blast from the past. During my teen-aged era when SJ was a D1 team, MacArthur Field was kinda the center of the HS football universe from Thursday through Saturday night. Multiple schools used it as their home stadium so games were played there seemingly every night. And the stands would be filled. Lots of rival coaches and players would show up to scout both teams. I also have another personal connection in that my HS playing career ended on that field playing against the Spartans, as I broke my leg in the South end zone.

Paradise: Only been there once. I decided to visit my son who was attending Chico State and check out a game together. This was a season or two before the fires devastated the area. Fans were camped outside the stadium from high vantage points. It seemed like the entire community was there and the town shut down. It was a cold Fall night. Everything you‘d want and expect from a Friday night lights experience.

Del Oro: This venue has it all. Packed stands. Great football games. Heavy student involvement. Tremendous band. Good BBQ. And a pretty darned nice facility. Although I loathed the Del Oro program from a rivalry standpoint for a long time, it was hard not to like their game night experience. With NU‘s program down for the count, this just might be my favorite SAC regional venue in terms of having everything.

Rocklin: Being a resident of the area for the past 16 years, I’ve seen more games at this venue than anywhere else. I‘ve always liked how the stadium sits beneath the surrounding houses and hills. It has a feel of intimacy to it that I don’t feel most other places. Pretty good snack bar options, and the Pizza Place bar across the parking lot was always a cool place to hang out for drinks before and after the games.

I’ve yet to make it out to The Corral In Oakdale but that’s certainly on my to do list. I fully expect it to be as good as everyone says.w

I’m also looking forward to checking out the new West Park HS Stadium once it finally hosts a game. I’ve seen pictures and it looks amazing. It’ll be one of a few area schools to not have a track around the field. So the sight lines should be fantastic. Also supposed to have an elevated viewing area from the snack bar near the basketball gym.

Thunder,

I thought about adding San Juan, McArthur Field and El Camino's home Abbott Field. Abbott Field is a SJUSD that I pretty much grew up at. Abbott was used by Encina, El Camino, Mira Loma and Rio Americano. Unfortunately not many big games in recent years at Abbott, but in the 60's and 70's it was home for some of the best football in the area with those dominant Mira Loma teams and some really talented El Camino teams in the 80's to early 90's coached by Jim Dimino.

Haha. Yeah, I cannot believe I left out Abbott Field!

That was the site of the first playoff game I ever attended. My older cousin started for EC’s 1984 D2 Championship team. My uncle took me to see the Section Final against Oakdale, who was QB’d by none other than Trent Merzon. The game was a classic Fall mud bowl game of the times. No score after regulation. EC won 6-0 in OT.

Like you touched on, Abbott Field was the East Sac/Arden version of MacArthur Field. I played at both venues every other season. Lots of memorable games there. I also used to play flag football on that field during the 2000’s decade with a bunch of friends around Thanksgiving and other times through out the year. We’d just sneak on when it was vacant.

IIRC you played at EC late 90’s while Terry was OC, right? Before he headed to Hiram Johnson along with Dimino.

Loved the setting at Sonora.
Something to be said for the grilled onions smell at Colfax while being surrounded by the trees.
Grant, no matter when you go, is the ultimate intimidator. Their fans are amazing to listen to.
Oakdale fans are insane and their stadium is drenched with pride.
I love how Whitney's stadium has the ability for the players to take the field through their stands, that's really cool.
I've coached against Yuba City 3 times. It's different. I believe they have one of the top 5 home field advantages of anyone in the section. Having to cross the street (which being from Rio Linda shouldn't be an issue, but for whatever reason it was), not knowing what's going on in there, and going down that dark alley to stadium, no bueno.
But my favorite place we ever played was Bear River. We played a week 9 non conference game there and we were both playoff teams. It was playoff atmosphere. Their fans were outrageous and heckled us from their end zone stands as we came on and off the field. I loved it.

I agree with Yuba City. Crossing the street all padded with their band playing rt in your face as you walk down the dark alley, getting ready for a very physical game with a championship on the line most years. Some of their fans absolutely loose it, I have been cussed out more there than anywhere else in my life. Yuba fans hate your team and they love to tell you about it. Awesome atmosphere and loud pregame old school country music, really fired our kids up. Great big game atmosphere!!!!
