Folsom baseball has endured a series of head coaching changes over the years. My elder son endured 3 HC's in 4 years and my youngest is on his 2nd in 3 years. After winning section championships in football, wrestling and basketball 2 years in a row, we may at least have some signs of stability in baseball with Coach Agnew who has been in and around the program for quite sometime.
When they opened the 2nd HS in Folsom (Vista Del Lago 07-08 academic yr.) there was a new head coach that brought some "swagger" to the new HS baseball team while Folsom was struggling. That frosh soph class had the option to chose a school and most of the athletes that favored baseball went to Vista (others perennially go to Jesuit, Christian Brothers or Capitol Christian also). That class went on to be the 2010 D2 State Champions in football.
The town is split along Oak Avenue (running roughly northeast to southwest) for Little League baseball and along East Bidwell (running roughly northwest to southeast) for high school. The streets cross about midway through town, resulting in a "bermuda tirangle" in the top and half bottoms of the "X" that leaves kids playing in a LL where most of their classmates will go to "the other" HS. The result is that each HS has a pretty good mix of 1/2 the team being from one LL and the other 1/2 coming from their cross town rivals. Hence, there isn't a story like football where all of the kids played together since age 9. This is possible in football as, although kids can play in either youth football organization, parents generally put their kids in the program associated with the HS they will attend.
While the talent in town still appears to favor Vista (they beat Folsom 2wks ago. 5-3) any measure of stability in the Folsom program is a step in the right direction. The change to the SFL from the DRL may be stepping out of the frying pan and in to the fire in regards to baseball, but that is yet to be seen.
In previous years with the DRL, Folsom was competitive with Sheldon and Ponderosa and usually took their beatings from Pleasant Grove, Oak Ridge and Jesuit.
In the SFL, Oak Ridge came along with Folsom. The rest of the league should be relatively even with Granite Bay, Rocklin, Del Oro and Woodcreek all playing upper level baseball and Nevada Union and Roseville being solid ball clubs.
Folsom starts league play today against Granite Bay, coming in 1-4 from the pre-league season having lost each of their last 2 outings by 1 run in the last inning to Casa Roble and Whitney. They are a young club in terms of playing together and under Coach Agnew and will gel as the season goes on. They would exceed expectations if they finish >.500.
