Time to turn the page and talk about next year. G61, you are a one trick pony and all those debating you for two months about the same subject leaves me incredulous. Let's move on- it's baseball season!

G61 really has nothing to talk about anymore. His Folsom team has graduated most of it's stars; opponents await next year for payback after the "run up the Browning statistics" season; and G61 alone left to state Folsom would have beat DLS this past year.

I have moved on to basketball where we are becoming the Cinderella story of the open division, You should come out and watch. The crowd, the venue, the atmosphere is amazing.

As you guys have stated before, football is old news, we already conquered that- 2014 STATE CHAMPS!!

mtnjohn, when Browning rips through the PAC-12 next year I expect you to show up at his door step and kiss his shoes. Don't be mad because he lit your team up last year. Ouch

How does Folsom usually fare in baseball? I know that Granite Bay is usually a strong team, but other than that I know nothing about SFL baseball. Many football players on the team?

We are mediocre in baseball at best in my opinion. We do have an amazing baseball facility though

Folsom baseball has endured a series of head coaching changes over the years. My elder son endured 3 HC's in 4 years and my youngest is on his 2nd in 3 years. After winning section championships in football, wrestling and basketball 2 years in a row, we may at least have some signs of stability in baseball with Coach Agnew who has been in and around the program for quite sometime.

When they opened the 2nd HS in Folsom (Vista Del Lago 07-08 academic yr.) there was a new head coach that brought some "swagger" to the new HS baseball team while Folsom was struggling. That frosh soph class had the option to chose a school and most of the athletes that favored baseball went to Vista (others perennially go to Jesuit, Christian Brothers or Capitol Christian also). That class went on to be the 2010 D2 State Champions in football.

The town is split along Oak Avenue (running roughly northeast to southwest) for Little League baseball and along East Bidwell (running roughly northwest to southeast) for high school. The streets cross about midway through town, resulting in a "bermuda tirangle" in the top and half bottoms of the "X" that leaves kids playing in a LL where most of their classmates will go to "the other" HS. The result is that each HS has a pretty good mix of 1/2 the team being from one LL and the other 1/2 coming from their cross town rivals. Hence, there isn't a story like football where all of the kids played together since age 9. This is possible in football as, although kids can play in either youth football organization, parents generally put their kids in the program associated with the HS they will attend.

While the talent in town still appears to favor Vista (they beat Folsom 2wks ago. 5-3) any measure of stability in the Folsom program is a step in the right direction. The change to the SFL from the DRL may be stepping out of the frying pan and in to the fire in regards to baseball, but that is yet to be seen.

In previous years with the DRL, Folsom was competitive with Sheldon and Ponderosa and usually took their beatings from Pleasant Grove, Oak Ridge and Jesuit.

In the SFL, Oak Ridge came along with Folsom. The rest of the league should be relatively even with Granite Bay, Rocklin, Del Oro and Woodcreek all playing upper level baseball and Nevada Union and Roseville being solid ball clubs.

Folsom starts league play today against Granite Bay, coming in 1-4 from the pre-league season having lost each of their last 2 outings by 1 run in the last inning to Casa Roble and Whitney. They are a young club in terms of playing together and under Coach Agnew and will gel as the season goes on. They would exceed expectations if they finish >.500.

Ironically (maybe not), DLS and Folsom are NorCal's top 2 wrestling programs. Folsom took it to DLS in a dual meet over Christmas break, but DLS came back and was the top NorCal finisher at state at 6th (as long as we're still not counting CS teams that dominate state wrestling). Gilroy is normally up there, but had a bit of a down year.

Like football, Folsom's success in wrestling is a relatively recent thing. The coach has been in place about 10 years now and the youth and MS programs are in place for sustainable performance. I wouldn't claim sole possession of any sort of dominance though. Folsom beat DO in the regular season dual by a couple pts, then won the Div 1 Section Duals and the SFL League tnmt. The next week, DO won Divisionals then SJS Masters. Pretty even throughout the season this year, but anyone with a bit of honesty will tip their hat to Vacaville. Vacaville (the "other" Bulldogs) have had a strangehold on the north for quiet sometime, winning 16 of the last 20 D1 section duals, still placing high at state and putting guys on the podium each year. They have a great program, as does DO and Pondo locally. We and Pondo had some epic duals during our run in the DRL and now I am sure DO will give us all we can handle each year in the SFL.

After 40+ years in wrestling, I am sure of one thing. If you want to get better, you have to wrestle people that are better than you! I think DO, Folsom, Pondo, Vacaville, Gilroy, DLS, Oakdale and others will continue to improve and push each other to get "closer" to the bar set by our southern neighbors.

But back at the topic at hand, baseball hasn't had the stability that the other programs have enjoyed and will struggle in the interim to "get on their level". BTW - lost the season opener to GB 5-1 after going 5 down 1-0, then the wheels fall off for an inning. Still making young mistakes but working hard every day. :)
